Water-based sealers are a much better choice. Besides being both easy to use and easy on the environment, they offer another amazing advantage they stabilize the sand. When water-based sealers cure, they will harden the joint sand and lock it into place. This helps to keep the joint sand from washing out during future rains. An example of this type of product is MasonrySaver Paver Sealer. Its a great brick paver sealing product that will stabilize the sand as well as give a rich, paver sealer wet look. Some of the older water-based sealers had a tendency to blush, or cloud up if they encountered any moisture or rain, but the MasonrySaver product is much more forgiving and virtually blush-resistant.

How Do You Remove Mold From Patio Pavers

If your original cleaning didnt remove any mold, you may have to repeat the steps a few times to get rid of it. Mold can be very stubborn and difficult to remove if you dont do it right.

Plus, oftentimes, it will grow right back, so make sure to get rid of all of it whenever you clean the patio pavers. For best results, use warm water and add some dish soap to the mix. Then pour it on the moldy locations and let it sit anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Then, using a brush that has reasonably stiff bristles, scrub the area lightly.

You should re-seal your patio pavers at least every couple of years. The sealers will also help guard against stains because they add a protective thin coat. As mentioned before, proper and regular sealing helps minimize the appearance of these black spots. But if you eventually forget to follow the pavers maintenance guidelines and experience this problem, you can use the bleach and water solution to remove the stains. The liquid proves to be quite useful for removing black lichen, but always remember to use it sparingly. We will see more about that in the next section.

Ways To Remove Green Layers And Moss On Bricks

Green soap, bleach and calcium remover are all suitable to remove surface layers of algae and moss. Dissolve it in hot water, pour it over the bricks, let it sink in, scrub the patio or driveway with a strong broom and rinse it with the garden hose.

• Special products

You can find various cleaning and removal equipment at hardware stores and garden centers. Ask the salesman for advise about which product is the most suitable for your patio or driveway and for the degree of pollution.

• High pressure cleaner

Renting a pressure cleaner to attack the green layers with an extremely strong water jet is the fastest way to clean your brick patio or driveway. You must be careful when cleaning concrete bricks. Make sure the nozzle is not too close to the surface, because the water jet can damage the top layer. Using regular sand is certainly more cost effective but thats about it Regular sand will not stop the weeds from growing up between your pavers as it doesnt develop a hard surface like the polymeric sand will.  Regular sand also will not prevent ants from burrowing under the cracks between your pavers as these are havens for ant colonies.

If you choose to use regular sand this is a project youll be doing annually as storm water will wash the sand away quite quickly.  Another thing to keep in mind is that youll continually be sweeping sand off the driveway and tracking it around your house and property.

If you have a large, beautiful, brick or paving stone driveway or patio and you care about its appearance then dont choose regular sand.  Youll be much happier with the results of polymeric sand, as described below.

Clean Your Patio Pavers

Last year, I borrowed a beast of a pressure washer from a friend, which certainly did the job, but I wanted to find a more inexpensive and less heavy option to purchase for ourselves. A few weeks ago I tried out a neighbor’s electric pressure washer, and I was so impressed by it that I hopped on Amazon Over the last week I have truly put it to the test, and I have to say that it passed every single one with flying colors.

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, then you’ll know that I do love a bit of pressure washing. There is something so gratifying about blasting gunk away with very little effort. But my goodness it’s so very TEDIOUS. Do you ever walk past driveways and see where people have given up on the job halfway through? I can totally understand why. It takes a lot of determination to follow through and finish after that initial novelty wears off.

Having done our driveway & patio twice now, I have picked up a few techniques and hacks that make the job a smidge easier to tackle. So, for anyone who feels a little bit daunted or intimidated by the task I thought I’d share a few tips to help get you started, AKA, Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Found Out the Hard Way.

Clear Your Patio Of Furniture Grills Etc

Before you do any cleaning, youll need to make sure its completely clear. This includes removable fire pits or any plants. Some furniture or plant life pieces can be ruined by water or chemicals, so it is essential to make sure you remove them.

If the furniture is metal, water can cause rust, and the metal will become weak. Chemicals can affect plants in particular due to bleach and other things causing the plant not to grow and kill the plant. Overwatering by a power washer can also cause the plants cells to burst and not function.

Use Dish Soap To Clean Cement

Its no secret that dish soap comes in handy for more than just dishwashing. This degreaser is highly effective at cleaning up concrete stains while avoiding the use of harsh chemicals.

Simply combine two gallons of warm water and two teaspoons of dish soap in a bucket, then dampen a mop with the cleaner and get washing. This is one of our favorite strategies to clean a concrete patio if youre only dealing with light stains.

Cleaning Pavers With Pool Chlorine

Chlorine or Chlorine bleach is a very strong chemical. Unless youre experienced and can be very careful; or if your pavers are really in a bad shape, it would be the last resort wed recommend. Indeed, make sure to wear gloves, protect yourself, keep pets/children out and protect the border grass. The portions here would be 1 part pool chlorine to 9 parts water. Mix the solution and spray it over the pavers. Start to scrub clean after about 5-10mins.

More Is Definitely Not Better

So if a little is good then a lot must be better, right?  No. Remember, were sealing concrete or brick paver stones and these stones are sitting on a bed of sand. When the sand gets wet and the sun comes out, its going to draw the moisture out of the wet sand and paver stones. These pavers need to be able to breathe, or allow the water vapor pass through them. When too much sealer is applied, the water vapor can have trouble passing through, resulting in a white blushed appearance, or even potentially peeling.

Dont be fooled. I know how great this stuff can look if you really lay it on heavy and how cool that high gloss finish is when sealing pavers, but blushing and peeling stinks! Limit your application to two coats and you wont have a problem.

How To Seal Pavers On Your Brick Patio Just Like The Pros

When my neighbor first decided to install a paver-block patio in the back of his home, he chose paver stones for several good reasons: he thought they would last longer than other materials like wood or poured concrete, they have a really rich elegant look to them, and most of all, he thought that they would be maintenance free.
