Dig Down Three Inches
Remove the soil until you have roughly three inches removed from the entire patio area. I found that three inches is the perfect depth for a pea gravel patio. Too shallow, and the rocks can mix with the soil and create a muddy mess. Too deep, and it’s hard to walk across.
To help dig out tough soil, I suggest using an electric cultivator like this one. Ryobi provided me with this handy tool for my backyard makeover project, and it made it much easier to dig out the patio area.
Another benefit of a pea gravel patio over pavers is that the ground doesn’t need to be graded or perfectly level before you pour the stone. I tried to keep the depth consistent around the outside for the paver edging, but the middle varies between two and three inches depending on roots I encountered along the way.
Stabilizing Pea Gravel For A Driveway
The first thing to do is to make sure that all leaves, tree limbs, and mud are removed from the driveway. If they are left behind, they will not compact enough to support vehicle traffic. You will need to dig down 8-12 inches below the surface of the driveway so you can rid of any roots that might be there. Doing this will help to stabilize your pea gravel driveway.
Then you will need to fix any drain issues. Water can loosen gravel in a driveway and you do not want it all to run out to the street, your yard, or drainage ditch after a rain.
If there are any low spots or potholes you need to fill them in. You want to make sure that you fill them with enough to make it level with the rest of the driveway. After putting the gravel down, you need to compact it by driving back and forth over the driveway until it is compacted.
You do not need to use a binding agent on the driveway. Just make sure that the driveway is firm and you do not leave any tire tracks when you drive on it. To make sure that the pea gravel does not move you can use edge restraints to keep the gravel on the driveway and not in the yard.
Laying Down The Pea Gravel
After the pea gravel has been dry for at least three days, wearing rubber gloves follow the manufacturer’s directions for mixing in the binding solution. Either pour or sprinkle the binding solution over the pea gravel in even and light layers. If there are large areas, apply the binding solution in two or three coats. Allowing the pea gravel to dry at least 24 hours in between each coat. While drying is occurring do not allow anyone to step on the pea gravel.

Seven years ago, my hubby was hired to pastor a church 600 miles away from our family and friends and everything that was familiar to us. I was nearly seven months pregnant with our fourth child, and I was just starting to get into the groove of homeschooling more than one child. We knew that we wouldn’t have much help on big projects, so, although we looked at a “fixer-upper”, we opted to buy a house that didn’t need any major work done immediately.
There were a number of things that were very outdated, including the bathrooms and kitchen , but we knew the home had good bones. The previous owner, an elderly widow, had taken meticulous care of the home, so although updates were needed, it was sparkling clean and well maintained.
But…
There were some things that I just had to change right away. For years I had dreamed of a beautiful outdoor space we could enjoy as a family as well as to have a nice space to entertain. I was happy that the house had a covered patio, but it was quite outdated. Here’s what it looked like right after we moved in.

Step Six: Add Pea Gravel
Once all of your pavers have been placed, it’s time for the pea gravel!
We also got our pea gravel from the local landscape store. It was about $50 for a cubic yard of pea gravel, which was enough to do all of the patio, turn Jackson’s old sandbox into a rock box, and add a thin layer of gravel around the side and back of the shed. For contrast, purchasing that much in just bags from the hardware store would have cost about $215. We picked it up in our truck, but even if we had chosen to have the rock delivered , we would have saved a ton of money!
This part of the project was satisfying, surprisingly fast, and incredibly back-breaking and exhausting . I did it all by myself in about 2.5 hours – I just loaded the wheelbarrow up, brought it to the backyard, dumped it onto the patio, and used a combination of a large broom and my rake to spread it around until it was level.
You’ll find that the pea gravel doesn’t always stay where it’s supposed to , so just accept the fact that you’ll have to sweep the patio regularly if you want it to stay looking nice and neat. It only takes a few minutes, so it doesn’t bother us at all but if you think that constantly having rocks creep up onto your pavers will make you twitchy, this might not be the project for you.
I will note that while we’ve had rocks hop up on the pavers pretty regularly, we’ve had almost no issues with the pea gravel escaping the actual perimeter of the patio. It’s stayed in place and out of our grass very well!

How To Stabilize Pea Gravel On A Patio
When you are using your pea gravel to make a patio, there will be some type of binding agent used. The first thing you need to do is to make sure that the area is cleaned of all dry organic material. You can then use a rake to level the surface where the pea gravel is going.
Line the edge of the patio with tape and paper to protect it from the binding agent. After putting down the pea gravel let it sit for three days. Follow the manufacturing’s directions for mixing the binding agent. Always wear gloves.
Once mixed slowly pour it over the pea gravel in even light layers. With a large area, you may have to do two or three coats of the binding material. Allow it to dry for 24 hours between each coat. When it is drying make sure that no one walks or steps on the patio.
Once you have put on the final coat of binding, you need to test it for stability. If the pea gravel does not move or feel slippery, it is stabilized. If it still fills slippery or moves a little you will have to apply another coat of the binder.
Before the coat is dry apply some sand over the binding solution and let it dry for another 24 hours. By doing this. it will help you to enjoy your stabilized pea gravel for years to come.
Installing Loose Pea Gravel
Installing loose pea gravel is relatively simple compared to other hardscaping materials. To first install the pea gravel, you will want to work the soil to a depth of approximately 6 inches. You will then want to lay down a two-inch layer of coarse base rock .
You should then place a three-inch layer of pea gravel. The base rock will help to stabilize the pea gravel by offering a firm supporting surface. If there are a lot of weeds present, you may want to add a barrier of landscape fabric between the base rock and the pea gravel. The downside however, is that the landscape fabric can degrade or become visible over time.
If a pea gravel path acts like a pile of marbles and is very slippery, it likely did not have the base rock layer installed. To help with the slipperiness, you can add in stone dust to help stabilize the pea gravel.

Sealing Solution No2: Resin/epoxy Sealants
The other option is a range of sealants that can be used over the existing gravel and pressed into place. These sealants come in a liquid form and are sprinkled over the gravel so that the mix settles into the spaces between the stones. You may need several coats to get enough coverage for your driveway. This will depend on the level of structure and hardness you want.
If using this method you need to wait until the driveway has been dry for at least three days and it is completely free of weeds or anything that might prevent the sealant from sticking to the stones.
The aim is that the sealant will coat the stones, while also binding them together into one mass. This will prevent movement and keep the stones in one place. The thought is also that the sealant will not prevent water from sinking through the stones, therefore preventing any water-based damage that can occur.
If you choose to seal your gravel, you may be setting yourself up from problems that you could have avoided by choosing a hard driveway, such as resin bound, in the first place

After most of the was in, we filled in the sides with more dirt and started laying out some new plants and bushes.
I picked out some cherry laurels to create a tall border wall along our property line. Once they grow in, they’ll create a tall and dense privacy wall.
I also ended up planting some mexican grass on the backside, and few hydrangeas and rhododendrons to brighten it up.

Because pea gravel is rounded and smooth, its angle of repose can be as low as 20 degrees; at steeper pitches, it will begin to shift. Heavy foot traffic can disturb gravel and create a mess.
