Video 1: Design a Roof extension over an existing patio
Existing patio is outside the dining room on the west side of the house. the patio is essentially unusable on a sunny afternoon in the summer.
This video looks at a couple of design options, including attaching the roof ledger below that of the existing eaves and setting the patio roof atop the existing roof.
The latter option was chosen because the low roof and roof beam would have blocked the view from the dining area. Did we say that the house is in Bozeman, MT, where the view is worth viewing?
Work from the view back, not from the house, out.
- Calculate the sightline clearance height, about 6 feet, 2 inches, in this case.
- Determine the beam size: 8 inches in this case.
- Choose a roof pitch and roof structure
This places the new roof on top of the existing roof. The next question is what to do with the existing eave under the new roof: kick it or keep it?
To tie the design together, Peter chose to cut the rafter tails off the extend the exterior wall up to the underside of the new roof. As it turned out, the existing roof structure is a truss system, but they were able to contact the original truss manufacturer to verify that cutting the tails off would not jeopardize the structural integrity of the trusses.

- Make a cutting on one of the sides of the horizontal roof beam on an angle. You have to do it thoroughly so that the rafters sit flush on it.
- Attach the horizontal beam by using a nail gun. After that, to make it flush with the roof of the existing house, cut the two outer rafters.
- Now you can begin assembling the outer rafters and attaching the rafter beam to the edge of the roof of the house.

I just took apart a very badly made porch attached to an old brick house . I do not want to go into the details but the old porch was so badly built that it pulled apart some of the old brick which I then had to re-point!

Attach 2×6 rafters to the house with joist hangers and/or supported by the ledger board. If necessary, use a sliding bevel to determine angles needed where the rafters will meet the ledger board. Rafters are placed on 24″ centers, and attached to the beams and settle joists are attached as needed . The rafters should be added from each end working toward the center. Check each rafter for level as they are installed. Attach to ledger first, then settle joists. The vertical end beam is checked for level as the end rafters are positioned and secured. If the rafters extend over a beam, do not extend more than 1/3 of overall rafter length.

How To Fix A Deck Attached Through Brick Veneer
To the best of my knowledge, there are two ways of addressing this issue. The first is to make the deck free-standing. This requires adding a beam right next to the house to support this end of the deck. The trouble with this repair is that footings will need to be added next to the house, and they might not be easy to get right. Deck footings are supposed to be installed on undisturbed soil, but the soil right next to the home is ‘disturbed’.
The other way to address this is to install new brackets made specifically for this condition. This bracket is the Brick Veneer Ledger Connector , made by Simpson Strong-Tie. It basically consists of a huge metal plate, a pair of extra-long lag screws, and a big threaded post that’s called a compression strut.

The compression strut holds the brick away from the home, while the lag screws support the deck ledgerboard.

Placement Of Header Determines Level Of Roof
Start With Ledger Board
A ledger/header board is the first step if you are attaching the patio roof to an existing structure. The placement of the ledger/header determines the level of the roof, so be sure it is positioned at the correct height and is horizontal. When fastening ledger/header boards to wood, the ledger should be held securely with bolts through the wall or lag screws.
How To Attach Ledger Board To Brick Building
A friend has an existing two story porch attached to a brick building. The porch is old but the wood is still solid. The ledger board beneath the 2nd story floor is separating from the building, increasing in distance to about 1 1/2 in at maximum. The old style construction did not have the ledger boards attached directly to the building. The ledger board was connected to a beam coming out of a beam pocket.
I was thinking that I could drill holes into the ledger board at about 2 foot increments. I would then use a hammer drill and masonry bit to drill into the brick. I would install some lag shields and lag screws and use them to slowly draw the ledger board back to the brick surface.
Does this sound like it would work?
I would appreciate comments or other suggestions. Keep it non-technical because I’m just a “weekender”.

It will not only allow you to raise the ceiling up to 2 feet, but also give various splendid options for the finishing look and relaxed ambiance.
You can go with opaque twin wall sheeting if you want to get some natural light for your patio.
Opaque twin wall sheeting that is installed between the roof of the patio and the barge cap allows natural light to pass through.
If you are not really into natural light and want to block it, you can infill the gap between the patio roof and barge cap, and seal the rear opening.
To get a cleaner and nicer look, you can add some extra flashing wall covering. After that, you can seal the brackets from the front.
Getting A Building Permit For A Patio Cover
Some people said a building permit was unnecessary, while others said it was impossible to get without a contractor’s license, or that it would raise my property tax, etc. So I called the permit and licensing office and got the correct answers.
- Yes, a permit was required.
- No, it wouldn’t raise my taxes,
- As long as the property owner didn’t care if I wasn’t a licensed contractor, they didn’t either.
Getting the building permit was actually much easier than I thought. I took the plans to the town’s permit and licensing office, filled out some paperwork, and the next morning I got a call and went back to the permit office to pick up and pay for the permit, which came to $85. They made a couple of alterations to the plan that not only were easy to accommodate but also made the project easier and cheaper! To prepare for the final inspection, I took pictures of each critical step to show the building inspector, which made the final inspection a snap.

Patio Cover Attachment Through Brick Veneer
Our house is brick veneer over standard 2×4 construction. I want to add a small patio cover over a nerwly installed paver patio. 6×6 posts at the corners and a ledger board along the house supporting the top of the simple shed roof.
I discussed the idea with an inspector at our county Building Regulation department, he said it would fine to use 1/2? lag screws to attach the ledger board into each stud through the brick veneer. I drew up the plans that way, and they were approved.
Now I’m having second thoughts. The inspector who looked at the pier holes sure didn’t like the idea of using the lag screws. His logic is sound: The screws are cantilevered through the 1? air gap and the 4 inches of brick, plus the 1 1/2? ledger board. That’s a lot of bending load, and if/when the screws bend they’ll be resting on the brick. Plus–how can you tighten up the bolts without risk of cracking the brick?
Other info:
Required snow load is 20 lbs/sf.
The ledger board will be 24? below a 24? roof overhang, so it probably won’t see much water.
The two posts are embedded in 12? diameter concrete piers that go down 32? . I’m counting on these to provide a lot of resistance to racking and other movement.
Questions:
1) Should I stop worrying and just build the patio cover using the lag screws into the studs as approved by the county engineers?

While looks are important, you want to make sure that the materials fit the structure. Since my patio cover was going to have a slight slope, shingles were out. A tar roof would work, but it would be a heavy smell like a BP oil spill. I decided on corrugated metal roofing because it’s resistant to high winds, is lightweight, and is structurally sound.
Using corrugated metal also allows me to reduce the degree of slope, or roof pitch needed to a mere 10 percent, or a 1-to-10 pitch. This meant the patio cover could start at the edge of the house’s roof at a height of eight feet and slope down to seven feet, leaving a clearance of more than six and a half feet between the lowest part of the frame’s headers and the ground at its outer edge.

Beginning Construction On The Patio Cover
Early the next morning the materials arrived at my house. Once the materials were unloaded, I began carrying the ten-foot-long boards and corrugated metal sheets to the backyard, laying them out in a pattern to roughly match how they would be assembled.
I also separated the corrugated metal sheets, wiped each one down with a light coat of vegetable oil, and then re-stacked them. This was something I had seen a neighbor do a long time ago when I was a child. I don’t know if it served any purpose other than making me feel better.
