How To Build A Square Gazebo Roof: The Basic Roof Components Youll Need

Backyard Gazebo for $500 w/ Limited Tools

I had a friend whose backyard garden was his pride and joy. He had quite the green thumb and a little bit of everything growing back there. But he had a problem. He had a lot of plants that couldnt handle constant sunlight and needed shade. He decided that he wanted to build a small garden gazebo to hold them. Thats where he ran into problems, because try as he might, he couldnt quite nail building a square gazebo roof.

If he hadnt already made up his mind to do a gazebo, I probably would have told him to go with a pergola instead. A square gazebo roof is by no means a beginners project. There are lots of cuts and a fair bit of work involved. However, if done right, a gazebo can be the perfect way to set off a backyard garden. It creates an interesting focal point and a good way to shelter more delicate plants. If youre looking for tips on how to build a square gazebo roof, weve got them for you.

Choosing Flat or Pitched for Your Square Gazebo Roof

Now, its certainly not the case that a flat gazebo roof is never a good choice. However, if youre trying to dress up a backyard garden, a simple flat gazebo can sometimes look out of place. If youre willing to do the work, creating a pitched roof is a completely doable project that just requires a little know-how.

How to Build a Square Gazebo Roof: The Basic Components

The Allure Of A Gazebo

Gazebos are the centerpiece of the backyard. They offer seating, style, shelter, and whimsy. Finding the right one for your home often comes down to how much shade youre looking for, materials, and aesthetics. For a hands-on approach to adding a gazebo to your outdoor space consider the following gazebo kits.

Keep it simple with a gazebo kit that takes up little space while providing the griller in the family with ideal shade. This design is constructed with a solid steel frame and high-quality polyester to ensure protection from the elements during warm months of the year. The mesh shelves installed on both sides allow for food and drink storage. Available on Overstock.

Backyard Vs Town Park Or Neighborhood Structure

Any structure in a public space requires a permit. Expect to pay between $50 and $200 and a longer project timeline. Gazebos in public spaces also tend to be larger than backyard options.

You may have to work with a contractor who often works with local authorities, which can increase the project price.

Attaching The Batten Boards

Attach the Batten Boards

Start at the bottom of the gazebo with the longest batten boards and work your way up. Assemble one pie wedge at a time, making sure the outside board is flush with the outside edge of the fascia board. Work your way around, securing the boards to both the main and middle rafters.

Add A Custom Gazebo To Your Backyard

Step : Attaching The Braces To Pergola

Building the braces

Use 6×6 lumber for the braces. Use a miter saw or a circular saw to make the 45 degree cuts at both ends of the braces. Next, use a jigsaw to make beautiful curved cut out to the braces, as shown in the diagram.

Fitting the braces

Plumb the posts with a spirit level and then attach the braces to the pergola, as shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes and insert 4 1/2 screws to lock them into place tightly.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Level and Secure the Base

Place building blocks at each corner plus the center, making sure the gazebo base is square and level. The blocks should be hidden under the joists. If the base is not level, the decking and wall sections may not fit properly. Attach the anchor cables to the joists and secure tightly.

Types Of Materials To Use

There are many different options for gazebo materials. Which ones you choose will be heavily dependent on your budget and expertise in working with the material. You can make your DIY gazebo plan from wood, vinyl, metal, or fiberglass.

If youre wondering what is the best wood type for building gazebos, just about any type that is treated to last in the outdoors will do. Some specialists recommend yellow pine or western red cedar for outdoor structures.

It also depends on the design of your gazebo. If youre looking for a pergola design , the material doesnt affect the design very much. However, for a traditional gazebo, youll need multiple types of material.

The structure supports are traditionally made from wood or vinyl because they dont heat up in the sun like metal. Youll also need waterproof roofing materials to build the gazebos roof to ensure no water creeps in.

Finally, you can also add screens or a door from different materials if you think it would look nice or be useful.
