How To Build A Fire Pit On Existing Patio

Secure The Fire Pits Base

Build a Concrete Patio Firepit for 100 bucks

1. Prep the Bowl- Take the bowl of your store-bought fire pit off of the stand. To do this, flip the fire pit over and locate the edge where the leg meets the bowl. It should be screwed together, so you can use a screwdriver to remove them. Simply rotate the screwdriver left to loosen the legs and take the bowl. If you have a fire pit assembly kit that you have not put together, you can use the fire bowl section without removing the legs.

2. Spray the Bowl- Then, you can spray the bowl with high heat temperature paint. This will seal the pit and help it last longer while retaining fire resistance without wearing down.;

3. Installation- When the base has been sprayed, set the bowl on the cinder blocks, laying the bases lip over the edges, so it fits perfectly. You can attach the lips of the bowl to the cinder blocks using cement or glue, but if you leave it unattached, you will be able to move it as needed and empty ashes or sticks from the pit for easy cleaning. Furthermore, if you do not attach the bowl to the base, you can replace it more easily if there are any issues.

Safety Of The House And Neighborhood

Fireplaces need proper ventilation and safety from a possible fire. A perfect fireplace requires proper ventilation and safety from a potential fire that could possibly start by sparks igniting nearby. For convenience, you should build your fireplace or fire pit close enough to the house, but should never cause a safety hazard to the house or the neighborhood.;It is not advisable to build your fireplace under a wall or roof line with a blocked airway.

In case of an emergency, always store a fire extinguisher near your outdoor fireplace.

Building A Table: Finish Up

Take out the form screws, and remove the form walls with a hammer and a pry bar or sturdy scraper. Have a strong buddy help you flip the top upside down. Seal the tabletop with an exterior-grade concrete sealer.

Install the control panel , and set your table base exactly where you want it before setting the top into place. Apply the leftover black and high-temp silicone to the top edge of the table. The top is heavy enough that it shouldn’t budge with normal use, but the silicone will create a stronger bond in case your burly, intoxicated brother-in-law falls down on it.

Insert the burner and make the gas line connections according to the manufacturer’s directions. Fill the burner with the recommended amount of rocks. Too few rocks and the pan will overheat; too many rocks and the flame will sit too high and be blown out by the wind.

All that’s left is to invite your friends and family for a relaxing conversation around the fire.

How To Add A Fire Pit To Your Paverbase Patio

It is important to note that none of the materials used to build a paver patio are fire rated. This includes any stones, walls, pavers, and Brock PaverBase. A fire pit can still be built and enjoyed with a paver patio, but special steps must be taken to insulate all materials from the heat.

Method 1: Build the fire pit first, and build the patio around it

If the patio has not been constructed yet, the best way to incorporate a fire pit is to create the pit first and build the patio around it. This will save you material costs, make it easier to clean out, and protect the patio from the heat.

If your fire pit is rectangular or square you should be able to lay your patio pavers right up to the built-in fire pit, but if it is round you may have to cut the patio pave stones to butt-up to the new fire pit, or you can fill in the gaps with fire glass or decorative rocks. These materials come in many different colors and varieties to match the design of the project. You should use a quality edge restraint around all edges to maintain the stability of the patio.

  • Tip: You can use a wet saw , or a masonry blade on a circular saw to cut stone. If you are cutting large quantities of stone, a circular saw will produce dust that should not be inhaled, so you should use a face mask. Therefore, to cut a large amount of stone a wet saw is recommended.

How Do You Build An Outdoor Fire Pit

If the patio has not yet been built, follow these steps:

  • Choose the location. Preferably from a point away from the house and where there are no trees covering the fire pit.
  • Check for square, adjust, and mark the outline with a shovel.
  • Put the blocks aside and remove the sod and dirt to a depth of approximately 2 inches.
  • Then tamp down the soil, keeping it as level as possible.
  • Next, add approximately 2 inches of gravel paver base, wet it, and tamp down. Then, add another half inch, and tamp again, keeping the base level.
  • With the base firm, place the first row of rocks. Make sure the blocks are touching. Then set the second row of blocks, staggering the joints of the first layer. If you have to cut a block, mark around it, and cut on two sides using a circular saw with a concrete blade, then part it with a chisel.
  • When the second row looks like a good fit, remove each stone, and apply concrete adhesive and reposition. Do the same to the third row.
  • After youve placed the blocks, add some more paver base and line the inside of the fire pit walls with clay fire bricks. Add a few inches of lava rock to hold them in place.
  • Then add logs and kindling and youre all set.
  • Fasten The Trim Boards

Set your table saw to a 5-degree angle and rip the 1×4 down to 2-1/2 in. That will create a beveled edge to help shed water. Cut the side trim boards and the back trim board to length, but hold off cutting the front. Apply construction adhesive to the frame and set the trim board on two 1-in. spacers. Drive 2-1/2-in. screws through the frame and into the back side of the trim board. Angle the screws a bit to prevent them from poking through the face of the trim board.

Fasten the planks with two 1-in. brads as low and as high as you can . Fasten the trim board with adhesive and 1-in. brads through the back of the door panel.

Create A Rounded Edge With Silicone

Run a healthy bead of silicone around the perimeter. Tool it into shape using a 3/4-in. dowel with the end cut at 45 degrees. While you’re tooling, let the excess spill over onto each side of the bead. After the silicone dries, those two lines can easily be pulled and scraped off. Black silicone works best because you can clearly see any excess that needs to be removed. Don’t use silicone on the inside edges. The silicone would make the form walls harder to remove, and those edges will be covered by the burner anyway.
