Retractable awnings extend to provide shelter and retract when not needed. Available in manual, electric, or remote-control operation, they cost more than other awnings but have many benefits. When retracted, a cassette stores the cover and its folded support assembly, protecting it from the elements. Some cassettes totally enclose the cloth covering, offering the most protection. Other, less costly options only offer partial protection.
You turn a crank to retract a manual awning. Keeping it extended when not in use makes it vulnerable to sudden storms. Some motorized awnings include sensors to alert you when weather conditions warrant retracting. Although the sensor needs replaced periodically, theres less risk that windy conditions will damage the awning. You can program some sensors to retract unassisted. They offer more convenience but are costly.
Choose a durable cover that retains its color, resists dirt, and provides UV protection. Fabrics include cotton, polyester, canvas, or vinyl-coated, either sewn or glued. Sewn seams last longer. Vinyl-coated fabrics are waterproof and desirable for rain protection. Other fabrics are water-resistant in light rain. Polyester sags less on large awnings. Canvas retains its color the longest.

Vinyl Patio Cover Cost
The average costs of a vinyl patio cover are between $5 and $13 a square foot installed. Vinyl is one of the lowest-cost options for any cover. It is easy to work with and comes in many different styles. It is also fairly low maintenance but is not as durable as other materials. Vinyl can be made into pergolas, lattice, panels, and many other roofing styles. You may be limited in colors and overall patterns.
Flashing A Patio Roof Ledger
Unless it will be protected from rain by the houses eaves or a solid roof, a roof ledger that is fastened directly to a house with wood siding should be capped with galvanized metal Z-flashing that tucks up under siding to prevent water from seeping in behind it.
Where integral flashing isnt possible, such as on a stucco wall, use Z-flashing and caulk the top edge. This is a job you must do before fastening the overheads roof rafters in place.
You can buy L- or Z-shaped flashing or bend it yourself. To bend sheet-metal flashing, make a form by clamping two 2 by 4s together on each side of the metal, and then hammer the metal to create a sharp edge at each fold.
Fit the flashing in place, caulk the top edge, and nail it with galvanized nails long enough to penetrate at least 1 inch into the structural members. Then caulk the nail heads.
If the house is sided with shingles or lap siding, simply slip the metals top edge up under the bottom edge of the shingles or siding as far as possible.

Im beyond excited to share this post with you today. This is a project that has been percolating in my mind for a really long time now, and I wasnt really sure if I could ever actually pull it off. I was very nervous to try it because despite tons of research, I couldnt find a single other person on the internet who has done this and talked about it.
You know I love a good challenge, though, so I guess Ill be the guinea pig!
First of all, let me catch you up. This summer, were tackling our backyard , and while the main focus of the makeover was always supposed to be our back porch, we had to build a DIY patio in the yard before that could happen. Its finished and styled including a cute little grilling area and now were finally ready to start creating a cozy, welcoming lounge space off of our house and I am so excited to jump in.
One of the most-suggested projects for this area was to do something about the wimpy little posts that hold up the metal roof on our porch. Its really a pretty ugly covering, and if I had limitless money and time wed certainly be ripping it out and doing something that feels a little more like part of the house. But, of course, thats not in the budget so weve got to make do with what we have.
We debated wrapping the posts in wood, but the problem was that the rest of the awning would still be this cheap, ugly metal and we felt like it would just look like we were trying to disguise the metal awning and pretend like its something else.

Our corrugated metal awning would keep your house cool in the summer by providing shade and keep it warm in the winter by blocking the harsh sunlight. This DIY will be easy to build with simple hand tools and wont cost too much. Its also quick to build, which means you can make it in a weekend. Beginning Construction On The Patio Cover
Early the next morning the materials arrived at my house. Once the materials were unloaded, I began carrying the ten-foot-long boards and corrugated metal sheets to the backyard, laying them out in a pattern to roughly match how they would be assembled.
I also separated the corrugated metal sheets, wiped each one down with a light coat of vegetable oil, and then re-stacked them. This was something I had seen a neighbor do a long time ago when I was a child. I dont know if it served any purpose other than making me feel better. Its a step I probably could have skipped, but who was I to doubt the wisdom of the ancients?
