Cut The Posts To Length

Backyard Gazebo for $500 w/ Limited Tools
  • Bolt posts to the steel strap anchors. Here’s how to do it:
  • Make the anchors by cutting 12-in. lengths of 1/8-in. x 1-1/8 in. steel and boring 7/16-in. dia. holes into them as shown in Fig. B.
  • Pro tip:You can find steel stock next to the threaded rod at your home center.
  • For extra grabbing power for your posts, be sure you put a bolt and nut into the base before you push the steel into the concrete.
  • The 6-in. of steel anchor above the concrete fits into a saw kerf at the base of each post.
  • Cut this kerf with a circular saw.
  • Pro tip:The blade won’t cut all the way through, so flip the post over to continue the cut in the other side.
  • Make the kerf wide enough so you don’t have to struggle to slip it over the steel anchor.
  • Before you mark your anchor hole cut your posts to length and bolt them to the steel strap anchors locations, screw the aluminum post standoff to the base of the post.
  • Pro tip:These standoffs keep the post elevated for protection against rot.
  • Pro tip:The 1-1/4-in. hole recesses the bolt head and nut to make room for the piece you’ll nail over the post later.
  • Grab a buddy to help set the post while you push the bolt through the hole and tighten it.
  • Once all the posts are in place, cut the 2×6 top plates and screw them to the top of the posts with a pair of 3-in. deck screws.
  • Plumb this framework with some temporary braces.

    How to build gazebo railings

Building the balusters of the gazebo is an essential task of your project, therefore you have to tackle it with great care and attention. There are many design options to choose from, therefore you should choose the one that fits your tastes.

In our example, we have used 2×2 balusters, placed every 3. The balusters should be 28-32 high, but you can adjust them according to your needs.

    How to build gazebo railings

In order to build the balusters, you have to use proper techniques. The bottom and top railings should be secured with screws driven at angle, or locked with corner brackets.

    How to build gazebo frieze

Use 2×4 boards to build the bottom and head rail of the frieze and 2×2 molding to build the balusters. In addition, make sure everything fits into place properly and has a neat look. In order to secure the balusters into place, drive nails through the bottom and top rail in the balusters.

You can also toenail them, but it would take longer an the look wont be the same. The design of the frieze should match your house and garden.

    How to build a gazebo

Fill the cracks and holes with wood putty and leave it to harden. Sand the wooden surfaces of the square gazebo with medium-grit sandpaper and protect the construction against water damage, by applying several coats of varnish.

    Assembling The Patio Gazebo Frame

The first thing we did was set up the sawhorses and top it with a sheet of plywood to use as our workbench. We needed a large surface to assemble the four fascia boards that connect the posts.

This is where youll first need the bar clamps. The patio gazebo kit comes with all the holes pre-drilled and I am happy to say that they all lined up perfectly. Plus the connectors are two sided so they suck together creating a really tight fit.

Once all the fascia boards were assembled it was time to put of the frame. They recommend four people for this project but we did most of the work with just the two of us. More on that in a bit.

We assembled the back side of the gazebo first while it lay on the patio. After standing it up we used used a little construction trick to hold it up while we worked on the third pole.

Its amazing how well one small board nailed to two surfaces acts as a third worker

We got the third and fourth posts in place and attached the fascia provided bolts and your crescent wrenches. Dont tighten completely until make sure everything is level and square before the final tightening. See their video series for the proper way to ensure square.

Since we were working with just two of us we spent way more time getting everything squared up properly. It can be done, we did it, but it would have been easier with more bodies.

Plus when you arent working on a perfectly level surface to begin with, expect that there will be challenges.

Decide On The Placement Of Your Outdoor Structure

If youre planning to add a gazebo, pergola, or pavilion to your backyard, you probably already have some ideas on where youd like it to go. However, youll want to evaluate this location carefully to be sure it meets your needs and provides the best environment for the structure youre building.

The best sites for outdoor structures are level and flat for proper support and drainage. Youll want to avoid adding a new structure to low-lying areas in your yard where water tends to pool or collect after heavy rain.

Youll also want to avoid building your structure near immature trees that may interfere with your proposed site as they grow larger.

Also, consider the paths you are likely to take through your yard to reach the structure. You wont want to place your structure in areas that encourage family members or guests to take a shortcut through your flower garden or near any potential hazards such as beehives or protruding tree stumps.

Finally, youll want to choose an area thats compatible with your intended purpose for your new outdoor structure. If possible, choose a site that is centrally located to encourage socializing and entertainment. If privacy is the goal, choose a more remote location near fencing, bushes, or trees to provide a quiet haven for relaxation and reflection. If you envision having your morning coffee or quiet dinners in your new structure, it might be wise to build it close to the house for easier access.

    Awesome Gazebo Backyard Ideas

ByFlorin Ciobanu | Submitted On August 31, 2009

If you’re thinking about building a Gazebo, you have several considerations to make and several options to choose from. Any handyman can put together the simplest units, while more expansive plans are best left to the pro’s.

    Gazebo Building Plans

Plans available online let you build a Gazebo from scratch – they range from simple step by step procedures all the way up to architectural blueprints for master carpenters. A basic handyman can usually get a set of cheaper plans and be on their way.

Additionally to plans are ‘modular’ units which come with some pieces already assembled. These units are available for sale both online and in offline stores. They make self assembly that much easier – all you do is follow the included instructions and put it together.

What Tools do I need to Build a Gazebo

You will need a good set of carpenter tools for building a Gazebo. A good level will help you keep things even. A hammer and screw gun will assist with assembly. A Miter saw will help you cut any angles that you need accurately. And a shovel will let you dig the necessary holes for footing the base. There may be additional tools required depending on your plans – modular units will require less assembly than from-scratch Gazebo plans.

I hope you have enjoyed this post, so many of you wrote to me after my newsletter went out saying that you had a similar gazebo and how important it was to secure it. I also found out that you can order replacement canopies on Amazon in case yours has ripped.

    The Mighty Helpful Gazebo Plan

Truly a gazebo with a classic design! Youwill find this challenging and at the same time very interesting because thisgazebo does not have a regular shape. It has an octagonal design and thereforeyou need to construct this side after side. First, this structure was notmerely raised from the ground. The best side was chosen where there were no lowlying trees that can affect the gazebo structure.

The ground was cemented and tiled beforethe layout for the gazebo was started. The structure has narrow yet strongposts that hold the mighty octagonal ceiling and heavy shingled roofing.Balusters line the bottom part of the walls of the gazebo creating a privatearea to dine or relax.

This gazebo was constructed in the midst ofa lovely garden making it the highlight of the area. This is a moderatelydifficult build and not for a beginner at all.

Will A Gazebo Add Value To My Home

Most of the time, any addition you make to your home will increase its value. Adding a unique gazebo creates something your home has that other homes in your neighborhood might lack. This exclusive feature will stand out to potential buyers and fetch higher value offers. It may also make it easier to sell your home in general.

People like to spend time outdoors while maintaining privacy, so a gazebo is a nice bonus if you are looking to sell your home. Just how much your gazebo will increase the value of your home depends on factors like demand, the materials used, its appearance, upkeep and how many other homes in your area have one.

    Figuring Out The Slab:

    How to Build a Gazebo

    Family Handyman

You dont have to get the slab dimensions perfect, but the closer they come to it the easier things will be later. If you hate doing concrete work, skip this section, photocopy it and give it to your concrete mason. A crew can do the work for about $1,200 while youre out shopping for lumber or cutting parts . Closely follow Fig. B if you decide to pour the concrete slab yourself.

    Running an Electrical Conduit

To build your gazebo, begin by driving a two-foot piece of rigid electrical conduit at the intended center of the gazebo. Drive it in 18 inches. Remove the sod with a rented sod cutter. Youll need to excavate a nine-inch-deep area radiating out about 78 inches from the conduit. After that youll set forms and put in a layer of 1/4-in. gravel to the dimensions shown in Fig. B. The idea is to have the outside foot or more of the slab thicker to support the weight of the structure. Heres how to run power anywhere.

    Tips for Building Your Forms

Now build a square inner form for the patio inlay, 72-1/2-in. on each side. Center it as shown and drive in the stakes on the inside of the forms and screw them together.

How Much Does A Gazebo Cost

    • Average National Cost: $7,587
    • Typical Range: $5,358 to $9,058
    • Low End: $325
    • High End: $27,000

The prices listed above are all national averages for building a gazebo. While most homeowners spend $7,587 to install a gazebo in their yards, the cost will vary significantly depending on whether you opt for a premade gazebo, gazebo kit, or custom design.

For example, you could spend as little as $325 to buy and install a gazebo kit, or you could splurge to build a custom gazebo costing north of $27,000.

Heres a bit more about the three primary ways you could purchase a gazebo to be built in your yard:

Premade gazebos are just as they sound – theyre preassembled. You dont have to put together anything or read complicated instructions. Since the gazebo arrives preassembled, a premade gazebo is typically more expensive than a gazebo from a kit.

A gazebo kitis typically the most affordable option for homeowners. The materials arrive, and all you need to do is put the nuts and bolts together or hire a professional to build it for you. Most gazebo kit prices start at around $1,500.

A custom gazebo is the most expensive building option. Youll work closely with a professional to discuss a design plan, and youll pay a hefty fee for the installation process. What youll get with a custom gazebo: You will have a one-of-a-kind gazebo designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscape and your homes architecture.

How to Build a Gazebo (DIY Illustrated Guide)

Heres a backyard story wed like to share from Jersey Shore, New Jersey.

Its a big job but not overly complex just take your time and dont rush. If you can assemble a desk from Ikea, you can probably build this. Its just like building 20 desks and then attaching them all together. Not impossible but it does take a lot of time.

I am only moderately handy and built it myself over three days with some minor help We did enlist the help of several neighbours on the last day to help put the roof on.

In the end we are thrilled with this gazebo and everyone who has seen it has been impressed with the results. Even a contractor friend said hed have a hard time building one for the same cost just buying the parts!

Detail of electrical install: Low outlet for regular usage, high outlet for string lights. Light switches control fan and outlet power. *Disclaimer, modifying the original design may void the warranty.

    SOME TIPS FROM MY EXPERIENCE:

+ Breaking it up into smaller jobs helped make the project more manageable. Day 1, I separated the hardware into labelled bags, built the posts and assembled the short and long beams Day 2, I assembled about 80% of the four roof panels Day 3, I completed the roof panels and then we stood up the posts, assembled the frame, and installed the roof

+ I found the quality of the screws to be excellent. Of the 1000 or so screws and bolts included, I only found a single one with a defect , and only broke one other

No one likes to deal with building permits, but they are usually required when building an outdoor structure. Building codes and regulations vary from one location to the next. In most places, a structure that is 100 square feet or less does not require a permit. However, check with the building permit office for local regulations in your area, to avoid getting a fine later.

Before building any outdoor structure, contact your local utility company to check for underground utility lines. The number 811 is the federally designated “call before you dig” number. It’s there to help homeowners and professionals identify where underground lines are buried to avoid damage.

Whether you have DIY gazebo plans or are assembling a pre-made kit, study your plans before you begin. A gazebo is a free-standing structure with open sides. It can be rectangular, round, oval but the traditional shape is octagonal. Some gazebo types include metal gazebos or wood gazebos.

There are many sizes of gazebos to consider but the popular sizes are 10 x 10 gazebos or 10 x 12 gazebos. For more inspiration, take a look at Home Depot’s DIY gazebo kits for backyard gazebo ideas.

Although gazebos vary in style, building one follows the same basic steps. Consult your plans to be sure of exact steps in building your gazebo.
