Pavers are often installed in a pattern using different sized tiles. The trick to figuring paver quantities necessary for these patterns is to assemble the repeating pattern, estimate the square footage of the pattern itself, and then calculate how many repeating patterns are needed.

For instance, if your pattern requires two 4 x 8 pavers for every one 8 x 8 unit, you can calculate the square footage of all three pavers together and then find how many sets of pavers are needed: patio sq ft ÷ 0.89 sq ft.

In addition to repeating patterns using different sized pavers, different layout patterns can influence how much material you should order.

The area that the paving slabs cover, whether that be individually or in a pack is displayed in square metres – the Bradstone Ashbourne Paving in Weathered Grey is sold as a patio pack which covers 9.72m2. The laying pattern for this product uses a suggested area with the dimensions of 3.6m x 2.7m .

What shape is your project area like? Rectangular? Square? Irregular? Were only asking because the easiest way to find the total area of your project is to estimate it as simple geometric form.

If you have a rectangular project area, to calculate it you just need to measure width, length and then multiply. For a circular shape, you will need to find the radius, raise it to the power of 2 and multiply by Pi .

If your project is irregular, the best thing you can do is to divide it into rectangles of different sizes and sum up their areas.

Dont be a perfectionist, thats why we will be adding a safety factor at the end. Remember you just need to estimate the area.

The next step is to find the square footage of paver you want to use. Assuming the paver size is 12 x 12, multiply 12×12 and then divide 144 by the answer, ie. 144/ = 1.0. That means you need one paver per square foot, which makes sense since a 12 x 12paver is 1 square foot.

Subsequently, question is, how many bricks do I need for a 12×12 patio? Divide 144, the number of square inches in one square foot, by the square inches of the brick to determine the number of bricks needed to cover 1 square foot of patio surface. For the standard brick size of 32 square inches, 4.5 bricks are needed to cover 1 square foot of patio.

Formula For Needed Crushed Stone

Use this formula to determine how much crushed stone you will need for your project:

/ 27 = cubic yards of crushed stone needed

In the construction world, most materials are measured in cubic yards. Multiply the length , in feet, by the width , in feet, by the height , in feet, and divide by 27. This will tell you how many cubic yards of crushed stone you need.

As an example, let’s say your DIY project is a patio, and it calls for the use of crushed stone as a base. If your patio is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide, and you need 6 inches of crushed stone for the base, you would plug those numbers into formula, as follows:

/ 27 = 3.7 cubic yards

When using this equation, make sure all of your measurements are in feet. Since we needed 6 inches of crushed stone, we used 0.5 feet for the height .

If your number comes out as a fraction , round up. In the example above, you would round the 3.7 cubic yards of crushed stone to 4 cubic yards of crushed stone. It is better to have a little extra than to run short.
