How Do I Make My Brick Patio Look New

The first order of business is to wash the pavers using a brick paver or concrete cleaner. Use the cleaner as directed and for the best results use a pressure washer to rid the pavers of contaminants like dirt, grime, mold, and mildew. Clean up the pavers and rinse them well. Then allow them to dry for a day or two.

Prepare Exterior For Pressure Washing

A pressure washer is an outdoor power tool that uses a pressurized stream of water to blast away dirt. Sometimes its called a power washer, but that’s a slightly different tool. Power washers heat the water.

Use a pressure washer to make light work of exterior brick cleaning. Youll get long-lasting results too. If you have the time, you can clean not only your brick but also your driveway and sidewalk.

  • Look for any cracks in the brick or mortar. Apply mortar or caulk to repair them before pressure washing. Otherwise, they may get damaged or blasted apart. Wait five to seven for the mortar to cure before power washing.
  • Cover and protect any electrical items with waterproof material. This includes light fixtures, electrical outlets and jacks. Covering these items ensures water won’t be forced into them during cleaning.
  • Cover nearby shrubs, bushes and flower beds with a tarp.
  • Seal windows with puncture-proof plastic sheeting and tape.

The Appeal Of Brick Patio In This Pandemic

Sorry!

I cant express the appeal of a brick patio in words!

You should ask someone who doesnt have a patio in their home. Frankly speaking, you should consider yourself the luckiest one if you own a patio. Because, lots of the people around the earth dont have a patio on their backyard. For your information, about 111 million US residents dont have any green space within a 10 minutes walk!

See! How lucky you are!

A patio is the only place where you can enjoy the warm weather, soak up the sun, and enjoy a mini outing during this pandemic. It also adds a visually appealing landscape view to your house.

Besides that, you can gossip with your friends by maintaining social distance, chitchat with family members while enjoying natures true beauty. Trust me, it will make you feel like a charm!

Research says that people living beside trees stay comparatively healthier, happier, kinder, more creative, and keep the mind calmer!

Whats more important than mental peace?

Theres all good and no bad on owning a brick patio. However, theres a simple downside of brick patios: maintenance.

Brick patios generally require more maintenance than other patios to preserve their raw attractiveness. Fortunately, it doesnt take a lot of effort to do the cleaning. Do a thorough cleaning only once in two months, and you are good to go!

Take A Look At Waterborne Sealers

When you choose your sealer, youll find that the two choices are solvent-based and water-based. I hate solvent-based sealers for the following reasons:

  • Theyre bad for our environment
  • If they get on my grass or flowers they kill them
  • They smell terrible
  • Everything has to be cleaned up with messy paint thinner

Water-based sealers are a much better choice. Besides being both easy to use and easy on the environment, they offer another amazing advantage they stabilize the sand. When water-based sealers cure, they will harden the joint sand and lock it into place. This helps to keep the joint sand from washing out during future rains. An example of this type of product is MasonrySaver Paver Sealer. Its a great brick paver sealing product that will stabilize the sand as well as give a rich, paver sealer wet look. Some of the older water-based sealers had a tendency to blush, or cloud up if they encountered any moisture or rain, but the MasonrySaver product is much more forgiving and virtually blush-resistant.

How To Clean Brick Patio Effortlessly

We all know the importance of brick patios. But, still we love to procrastinate here!

Why?

Because of those immense tasks we have to do, right?

Okey dokey!

Lets shorten the process and make the task as easy-breezy as possible. Yes, after immense research, weve broken down this brick patio cleaning process only into four steps. Here are the steps

  • Preparing the patio
  • Got everything? Lets start from the first step.

How Do You Prevent Mold From Growing On Concrete

The best way to solve a mold problem on concrete is to prevent it from happening in the first place. One way to do this is by eliminating the key element mold needs to grow, moisture.

For concrete patios, driveways, and walks, cut back foliage that creates shady areas on a driveway or walk that never see the sun.

Also, check for cracks in the pavement that can collect water and cause mold growth. Fill these cracks using a concrete repair product.

For areas where this isnt possible, consider treating the concrete with an acrylic sealer designed for outdoor use. This prevents moisture from penetrating the driveway or walk, eliminating the environment mold needs to thrive.

For indoor areas, fix leaky pipes that are causing mold growth. For basements that flood, consider using a product such as Drylok to prevent moisture from entering the basement when it rains.

If that isnt an option, a dehumidifier is also an excellent means of keeping the humidity level in a basement in check, preventing mold growth. Remove materials that can get wet and breed mold growth, such as cardboard, wood, cloth furnishing, and area rugs.

Also, check the areas around the foundation of the home. If the earth is not properly graded to cause water to flow away from the house when it rains, grading may be required. Keep leaves and other debris from piling up around the foundation, which can trap water and direct it through the foundation and into the basement.

    How To Clean Interior Brick

Interior brick is a beautiful addition to any home. Exposed interior brick is seen in old houses or added to newer ones with veneers. It commonly appears on fireplace mantels because its fireproof.

However, like any other surface, brick can get dingy or stained. Soot can discolor fireplace brick and cooking grease may dirty a kitchen brick veneer. Luckily, you can clean indoor brick with household products or store-bought cleaners.

The basics of cleaning brick are as follows:

    • Remove the surface dust and dirt.
    • Wet the brick with water.
    • Apply your DIY or store-bought cleaner of choice.
    • Rinse with warm water.

A sponge is gentler than a brush, so start by using a masonry sponge. If you must use a scrub brush, choose one with soft nylon bristles.

A wire brush works, but it damages the brick by removing a thin top layer of stone and mortar. It also can leave behind tiny pieces of wire that may rust. Avoid using a wire brush if possible.

While youre learning how to clean a brick fireplace or other brickwork, cover the surrounding area with a tarp or drop cloth. This keeps any dirt or soot thats been kicked up from settling on your floor and furniture.

How To Clean Your Brick Patio: Step

Posted on August 25th, 2015 by Devine Bros

For those of us who are lucky enough to have a backyard patio, you know how much of a luxury they are. They provide a place to enjoy the warm weather and soak up the sun, and they can also add visual appeal to your landscaping.

Many homeowners prefer brick patios instead of concrete because they are a more attractive option. While it certainly does have its benefits, they do have a big downside: maintenance.

Keeping your brick patio looking like new takes a little bit of time, but it doesnt have to take a whole lot of effort. Just clean it every two months using these step-by-step instructions.

  • Remove all furniture from the patio.

  • Eliminate all weeds growing in the cracks by pulling them from the base to ensure they dont quickly grow back. If you cant access the base of the weed, use a chemical weed killer.

  • Sweep away all leaves, grass, dirt, and other loose debris.

  • Using a stiff-bristled brush, remove any visible stains from the patio. You can use a one-part bleach to ten-parts water cleaning solution to do this.

  • After scrubbing away your stains, rinse the patio with a garden hose and allow to dry.

  • If there are still unsightly stains, head to your local hardware store and purchase a stain remover. Make sure to by the one specially made for your surface type: stone, brick, flagstone, pavers, etc.

  • Consider applying a masonry-grade sealcoat to your patio to help preserve its look and durability for years to come.

    Sprinkle Some Baking Soda

Another method that you can use is to sprinkle some baking soda onto the surface of your brick patio.

Baking soda has alkalizing properties, which, along with its abrasive nature, will help remove moss from any green patches on your brickwork.

Be sure not to be too rough when using this solution, as it could damage softer bricks or mortar joints!

This shouldnt affect how strong the acidity levels are, though, if applied correctly even soft limestone blocks should gain a similar effect in how theyre cleaned off.

Dont Make These Mistakes Installing Polymeric Sand On Your Paver Or Brick Hardscape

Before & After – Cleaning the Brick Patio #Cleaning #BrickPatio

The installation of polymeric sand is not rocket science, but there is a strong connection between installation quality and how long the product is going to last. With the added cost of the sand and the labor required to install it you probably want to get this right, or at least make sure the contractor youve hired knows what they are doing.

    1. Dont Buy The Cheapest Sand You Can Find! At one point in time , there was only 1 player in the Polymeric Sand game and that was Techniseal. Now there are dozens of options when it comes to polymeric sand but its important to know they are not all created equal. If the sand youre choosing is the cheapest option its a pretty good chance theyve used portland cement which keeps costs down and also helps speed up the set up time . While that might sound like a good thing, its not! Polymeric sand that uses portland cement also typically uses lower quality polymers that can leave a haze on your pavers that is difficult to clean once its set.

Choose a high quality polymeric sand that uses high quality polymers and avoid polymeric sand that contains portland cement. Choosing a good quality polymeric sand will make it easier to apply and youll end up with a much cleaner finished look. High quality polymeric sand can go for $20-$40 per bag and the coverage area differs.

Slegg Lumber, Windsor Plywood, Home Depot and Rona are all local suppliers of Polymeric sand from various manufacturers.
