How Do You Remove Oxidation From Patio Furniture

How to Easily Clean Patio Cushions

Heres how to treat oxidized or rusted metal on outdoor furniture:

  • Using a detergent-soaked sponge, give your aluminum furniture a thorough cleaning. Be sure to rinse away any remaining suds or debris, and inspect your furniture for any scratches or nicks.
  • If needed, touch up any blemishes with car paint of the appropriate color and follow with a coat of automotive wax for extra protection that will last throughout the summer.
  • Remove any rust thats accumulated on wrought-iron furniture by using a wire brush or steel wool and follow with a coat of exterior spray paint thats created for wrought iron.
  • Let the paint dry completely before applying cushions or canvases.
  • Science Behind These Ingredients:

You will notice this is very similar to the first method I talk about, but this time we have borax added to it. Borax can help with mold or mildew due to the boron compounds, so it makes a great option for this scrub. Be sure to read this post on the science of borax and all the things you can use it for.

The acidity of vinegar helps break down the stains from mold on fabrics. It doesnt always work on its own, but it helps all of these ingredients work together.

The last star ingredient for this mold or mildew remove is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is one of the main ingredients in our homemade mold remover spray because it works so good! It works as good as bleach for killing mold. You can read more about tea tree oil and the science behind it in this post.

Using this combination of ingredients has worked well on my fabrics in the past when I have had a touch of mildew. Like I mentioned above, we dont get that very often in Texas due to our hot dry weather, but some years we have very wet summers that linger.

Tips For Cleaning Outdoor Furniture Cushions

June 24, 2020By Mulberrys Garment Care

    Warmer weather and longer days mean you are going to naturally spend more time outdoors. This is especially true if you have a comfortable set of outdoor furniture. Because your outdoor furniture is stored outside, its eventually going to get much dirtier than your indoor furniture because it is constantly exposed to the weather. Outdoor furniture cushions can accumulate dirt, grime, mold, and other types of stains relatively quickly.;

Outdoor cushions, pillows, canopies, and umbrellas are meant to last for years, but if you dont care for them properly, youll notice a difference much sooner than youd think. The best way to ensure the longevity of your outdoor or patio furniture is to clean it regularly, and that includes your outdoor cushions.

Cleaning outdoor furniture cushions will depend on the type of stain youre trying to remove and the type of fabric or material that the cushion is made of. Some patio furniture fabrics are treated with coatings that protect them from UV rays and/or water, so its important to check for specific cleaning instructions or restrictions on the cushion tags.

To clean mildew from outdoor cushions, follow these instructions:

First, conduct a bleachability test by adding 2 teaspoons Clorox® Regular Bleach2 to ¼ cup water and apply a drop of this solution to a less visible part of the cushion. Wait 1 minute and then blot dry. No color change means you can safely bleach the cushion. Depending on the type of cushion you have, follow instructions below:

  • For a removable cushion cover: take off the cover and zip it closed. If the mildew is severe, let the cover soak in a solution of ¼ cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2 per gallon of water for 5 minutes, making sure it is fully submerged. Wash in hot water using detergent plus ¾ cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2. Do not place the cover in your dryer. If after washing you have made some progress, then repeat the treatment. When washing is complete, you will need to put the cover back onto the cushion before it dries, otherwise the cover may not fit!
  • For a non-removable cushion cover that has a water-repellant finish: working outside, wipe the cushion down with a bleach solution of ¾ cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2 per gallon of water. Reapply the bleach solution as necessary to keep it wet for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly using a garden hose. Be sure to also water any plants near the area you are working before and after you wash the cushions. Let the cushions air dry in a warm, dry place.

Rescue dull, dirty wood or wicker furniture with these easy cleaning strategies. To remove grime, use a mild oil-base soap, such as Murphy Oil Soap, mixed with warm water. For a DIY cleaning solution, mix 1/4-cup ammonia, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, and 1 quart of warm water. Commercial wood cleaners are also effective for cleaning patio furniture, but be sure to read directions carefully. Wicker and painted woods might require diluting the solution.

To protect your patio furniture, regularly wipe down wood to remove dirt, debris, and excess water. For hardwoods, consider annually sanding and applying a fresh coat of protective finish, such as oil, stain, or a polyurethane coating. Hose down wicker every few weeks to prevent dirt buildup in crevices.

    Resin Furniture With Cushions

Clean resin furniture with a solution of 1 gallon of water, 2 cups of detergent and 1 cup of bleach. Scrub it thoroughly with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid using the bleach solution on fabric cushions, unless they are white, as the bleach can discolor them. For fabric cushions, mix 1 cup of water with 1 cup of ammonia. Dip a white lint-free cloth into the solution and dab the mildewed area on the cushion until the liquid is absorbed. Repeat until the stain disappears; rinse and blot dry. Lay the cushion in the sun until it fully dries.

    Machine Washing Outdoor Cushions

Not all outdoor cushions are machine washable. Read the cleaning instructions listed on the manufacturers tag. If no tag is present, check the manufacturers website for detailed cleaning instructions before proceeding. Always vacuum the covers and cushions before tossing into the washing machine.

Vacuuming removes loose dirt and debris. If there is no time to vacuum cushions, give them a good shake before throwing in the machine. Pre-treat all stains before washing for better chances of removal.

Replace covers on cushions while slightly damp as it allows the cover to stretch back into place easily. If your machine dries the cushions, remove from dryer before completely dry and place them back over their inserts to prevent any misshaping while drying.

Poolside cushions are another vulnerable spot, as the air is more humid around a pool and you have wet people and towels laying over them.

Most cushion covers can be machine washed, but check the label just in case. Remove the covers and put them in the washing machine. Check the labels to see at what temperature they can be washed. Clean Patio Furniture with Super Clean

Most outdoor furniture fabrics are made from stain- and water-resistant materials that are designed to stand up to the elements better than materials like cotton. But, that doesn’t mean you can just throw the pillows out and forget about them forever. Some regular maintenance goes a long way for keeping them looking good for summers to come.

“Rain and humidity can leave fabrics damp and lead to mold and mildew developing, so its important to make sure normal cleaning is part of your routine,” Feldman explains. He recommends cleaning your cushions twice a year: once in the spring when you take them out of storage, and once in the fall before putting them away.

You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, but in lieu of instructions, Feldman recommends the following for basic cleaning.
