Tips To Prevent Mold And Mildew On Patio Furniture

Eliminate Moisture: Make sure that there is a positive flow of air. If your patio furniture is placed inside a sunroom or enclosed space, you may want to get a dehumidifier or have a fan blow air out of the room to reduce the amount of moisture in the room.

Sunlight: Dark, damp, and humid conditions are the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. Move your furniture outside of the shade or lower your patio umbrella to allow more sunlight to reach your cushions. Nows the time to trim up that old tree that youve been meaning to get to!

Furniture Covers: If the furniture is placed under a cover, make sure your patio covers have vents and are made of breathable materials like these.

Teak: I wrote a guide on teak furniture here. You should look at this if you want to learn more specifics on mold and mildew as they relate to outdoor teak furniture.

Regular Care and Maintenance: The more often you clean your outdoor furniture, the more likely youll be able to prevent it from popping up again. I recommend light cleaning 3-4 times a year just to keep the cobwebs out.More Tips to Clean Outdoor Furniture:

How To Clean Your Outdoor Umbrella Fabric

Recasens acrylic canvas fabric is water and mould repellent and will last a very long time if maintained well. However, over time, the accumulation of dust, pollution particles, organic plant matter, pollen and general dirt can embed itself into the fabric and shorten the life of it.

It is a good idea to periodically give your umbrella fabric a light brush down with a soft bristled brush/broom and water from a garden hose. This will help to dislodge and remove loose dust and dirt that has settled on the fabric before it can embed itself more deeply. Although mould will not grow directly on clean acrylic canvas, as dirt and organic matter embeds itself into the fabric the mould will be able to grow on the embeded dirt and organic matter, so it is best to remove dirt earlier.

How to clean light dirt and marks from your outdoor umbrella fabric:

Depending on how often you use your umbrella, you may eventually need to give it a more thorough wash to remove any embedded dirt or early signs of mould growth. To do this you will need to mix warm water and mild soap or mild dish washing liquid in a bucket. Use a soft bristled brush to generously work this soapy water into a lather over the umbrella fabric. Focus mostly on the areas with the most dirt or stains, then allow the soapy water to soak into the umbrellas fabric.

Once you are finished soaking the umbrella fabric, rinse it thoroughly with a hose until all soap residue is removed, and then air dry the fabric.

DIY by Design: How to Clean Your Patio Umbrella

Before cleaning the patio umbrella, you need to create a protective surface where you can lay it down. For this, you can use an old blanket. If none is available, you can use other alternatives such as a tarp or a bunch of worn out towels. The protective surface must be bigger than the umbrella to guarantee that no part of it touches the ground.

Once the protective surface is set, open the umbrella and then place it at the top of the old blanket. Attach the hose to a reliable water source and then try to wet the umbrella. If no hose is available, use a bucket instead to wet the umbrella. Having a second person to assist can really make this task much easier. Ask that individual to hold the umbrella in order to avoid it from rolling off from the protective surface.

Get the bucket and fill it with warm, clean water. Put in some mild detergent, preferably a laundry detergent or dishwashing soap. The next thing to do is to scrub the umbrella. To do this, use a soft sponge or cloth. Dip the fabric right into the soap solution and then, use it to scrub the dirt off the umbrella. For stubborn stains and dirt, it is advisable to put your free hand at the opposite side of the part that you are brushing.

After scrubbing, get some clean water and then rinse off the soap until there are no more residues of soap left. Once the umbrella is entirely clean, let it stand under direct sunlight and wait for it to dry.

    Look For And Treat Stains

If you still have some stains in your umbrella fabric after the first go-round of cleaning, you can pay special attention to those areas with the same cleaning solution. However, instead of merely rinsing the soap away, try blotting it away with a rag or cloth.

Repeat this process until the stain is gone. If need be, you can try a laundry stain remover, but youll want to spot test it in an inconspicuous area first. Make sure to rinse away any soap or stain remover before moving on to the final step.

How To Maintain Your Patio Umbrella

Now that your patio umbrella is looking as good as new, you want to take a few extra steps to ensure it stays that way. During the summer months whilst your patio umbrella is seeing the most use, it is good practise to clean it using the above steps around every 30 days.

After the umbrella is clean and dry, you can spray the entire surface area with WD-40® Multi Use Product which will form a protective, water repellent barrier to help elongate the lifespan of your beloved shade maker. You can also spray a layer of product onto your umbrella pole, which will protect the metal from the elements and rusting.

    How To Clean Removable Tops

If the umbrella top can be removed and it has a label stating that it is machine safe, you can clean it in a washing machine with cold water and detergent. Try to avoid a center agitator otherwise, you might end up with too many wrinkles.

Before placing it in the washing machine, you can vacuum the dirt and dust to loosen it and make it easier to clean. If you have any stains, put a mixture of laundry detergent and water on them and leave them for 20 minutes to make sure they will be removed during washing. Do not place the umbrella cover in the dryer instead, let it air dry either back on the umbrella or on a clothesline.

In case your umbrella top becomes extra wrinkly in the washing machine, you can use an iron to fix it. Make sure the iron is on low-heat to avoid any damages to it.

    Patio Umbrella Storage Tips

Removing & Replacing The Vented Bistro Patio Umbrella Canopy
    • Before Storing – It’s best to thoroughly clean and completely dry an umbrella before storing. Doing so will prevent dirt from sitting on the fabric for an extended period of time.
    • Close and Secure – Making sure the canopy is closed and secured will prevent the umbrella fabric from wrinkling or getting accidentally punctured.
    • Protect the Pole – Cover the ends of the pole with a suitable material like cardboard. This will help prevent the pole and canopy from being damaged. Detach and slide the bottom pole into a folded section on the outside of the canopy. It is not recommended to slide the pole inside near the rib area, as it might cause damage.
    • Cover – Use a quality cover to keep your umbrella clean while stored. Many manufacturers include an attachment at the finial that can be used as a hanger, which is the best way to store for an extended period of time. If not, it is best to lay the umbrella on a large shelf.

    • Never use abrasive cleaners on umbrella canopies or frames. Doing so could cause damage to the finish or cause the canopy material to fade. Fabrics like Sunbrella can be cleaned using a bleach solution without fear of fading, but it’s best to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions just to be sure.
    • If possible, take umbrella down or store inside when high winds or inclement weather conditions are predicted.
    • Do not force umbrella to open or close, as it could damage its internal mechanism.
    • Invest in a cover to protect umbrella from bad weather conditions and accidental rips or tears.
    • Always clean umbrella before storing.

    Cleaning A Canvas Patio Umbrella

    Best Answer

Never, never, never use bleach or alcohol on canvas. Not only will it break down and eventually destroy the fabric, but it will also cause yellowing.

Never use harsh detergents or detergent anything. Use Woolite or natural cleaners without detergents.

Try natural orange cleaner . This product doesn’t have detergents.

Hose down the umbrella so it’s saturated. Spray the surface with orange cleaner or a solution of water and woolite if you prefer. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow it to break down the mildew or sticky substance from the trees. Hose it down. Do it a second time if necessary, or you use a large car washing sponge to gently wipe down the surface.

I recall reading somewhere that the orange cleaner works well on canvas umbrellas, awnings, etc. I haven’t tried it yet myself but the most important is to avoid using harsh detergents unless you want to shorten the life of your fabrics.
