Flies are unhygienic and although they may not bite, they may be the carriers of various pathogens that could lead to diseases. Apart from this, they are also annoying. Instead of waiting for them to infest an area so as to take action, it is possible to be proactive. There are a number of things that can be done to keep flies away. Discussed below are some measures on how to repel flies.

Use of sprays: There are some scents that flies will stay away from. To repel them, one could use scented sprays. These could be manufactured or made at home. All one needs is some water and a few drops of essential oil such as tea tree. Pyrethrum sprays are also effective. Mix these well and spray on window sills, doorways, corners ad cracks. This will keep the flies from entering the house. One can purchase products that have the ability to emit short bursts of the spray to deter flies.

Use of plants: There are plants that are well-known fly repellents. These can be used both indoors and outdoors as fly repellants. Marigolds, mint and basil are one way to keep flies away.

Stage : Fly Control Techniques

At this stage, we are going to control the growth of flies by destroying their breeding sources. Lets see the steps involved in this process:

Step 1 Identify:

First of all, identify the species of the fly that you mostly see in the infested area. You can use the below table to do this. In this table, I have compiled the data about commonly found species of flies and their possible breeding sites.

Step 2 Find the Breeding Source:

Now after you have identified the species of fly that has infested your household, check its breeding sources from the image and find similar sites in the vicinity of the infested area. Please note that such sources could be located up to 500 800 meters away from the place of infestation.

This will help you to understand where the flies are coming from.

This step may take time, but then you cannot skip this step as it is the most important step in the whole process.

Step 3 Clean the Breeding Source:

After you have found a probable breeding source of those flies, clean it up. Wash fly specks off the walls, ground, or floor with a borax and water solution. This removes the trace that flies leave to attract other flies to an area.

If it is near some garbage can, then it is better to cover it up and remove garbage at least 2 times per week.

Step 4 Wait for 1 to 3 months:

My Experience It Works

Glass + Water + Pennies = crazy fly repelling abilities.

It was unreal. Id say it reduced the flies by about 90%. At one point we looked up and the flies were just sitting on the deck railing staring at all the food they couldnt ruin.

RE-ENACTMENT:

Weve used the fly trick each outdoor meal since. The more glasses full of water, the better the fly repelling ability. The kids think this is the coolest thing ever and have learned not to drink the water with the pennies in it.

Apparently it has something to do with flies thinking the pennies were compound eyes of a much larger bug looking back at them. To us, they just look like coppery decorations that glittered in the sunlight. Theyre so PRETTY! my kids sighed

Ceiling Fans Are Friends

8 Plants and Herbs That Repel Flies Naturally

Did you know your ceiling fans, box fans, or any other type of fan can help keep flies away from your home or encourage them to get out of your home?

Well, by turning these fans on it makes things difficult for flies. They cant maneuver as well because of the strength of the wind from the fans. The wind makes them want to flee the area. I dont use screens in my windows at times but will turn on my ceiling fans. I rarely have any flies in my home for this reason.

How To Remove Flies From Your Patio

Fortunately, eradicating flies from your patio space isnt difficult, just requires some cleaning and perhaps purchasing some fly control products.

  • Step 1: You need to eliminate potential food sources and other materials from your patio that may be attracting flies. This means tidying your entire outdoor space. Wipe down your patio furniture with cleaning agents, and spray down your pavement to remove any sticky residue from food. Its also a good idea to remove nearby pet waste, seal up your garbage can, and also take rotting wood to the nearby dump.
  • Step 2: Its fly bait time! Every month, scatter some fly bait on and around your patio, as well as other areas that the flies are attracted to. Be careful though, some of these products can be toxic to humans and pets, so dont use them in areas where you directly serve food or somewhere that your pet can get into.
  • Step 3: Use some sticky flytraps and hang them from tree limbs, in your garage, on birdhouses, or other areas that the flies are attracted to.
  • Step 4: Spray insecticide around the exterior of your home. But like the fly bait, make sure you spray it in areas that wont endanger your pets or children.

Avoid Leaving Food Out

Flies are naturally attracted to food, food wastes, and other moist organic material. Keep all food put away when not in use and make sure flies dont have access to food sources in your house.

Sanitary Rules to Avoid Attracting Flies

  • Store all food in the refrigerator or sealed containers.
  • Put away food and wash dishes immediately after a meal.
  • Clean up spilled foods immediately.
  • Keep garbage tightly sealed and take it out regularly.
  • Keep the garbage disposal area clean and sealed.
  • Keep compost materials in sealed containers.

Treat Your Doorways And Window Frames

If youre hosting the party on your porch close to the house entrance, you can treat the doorways and window frames with Pyrethrin-based insecticides or other natural forms of repellent to discourage flies from food at the party.

Pyrethrin is a product made from the chrysanthemum flower and works against common house flies, gnats, and other insects too. Like a silent assassin, it wont leave any traces, at least, not on your doors or windows.

The product in the image below, Mosquito Magician, is made from a blend of essential oils, including Citronella, Garlic Oil, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Cedarwood, and Geraniol.

It can be used outdoors around the home, garden, patio, and pool, and lasts for up to 2 weeks.

You simply mix 4 oz in 1 gallon of water and spray it around with a pump sprayer, fogger, or even a commercial backpack sprayer.;

Does Citronella Get Rid Of Flies

Garden Maintenance : How to Repel Flies With Herbs

The question we have today is, does citronella actually work in eliminating flies? The answer is yes, but not in the way that you may think. Citronella will not eliminate flies in the sense that the flies go BUT, citronella will repel them so that they are eliminated from your spaces.;

The citronella plant or oil does not actually eliminate flies, however, it simply repels them. The lemony smell of the citronella plant is so strong and so aromatic, that it will mask any smells that a fly or other insect may be attracted to, and will, in turn, make it harder to find and locate those stinky smells flies and other insects seem to love.;

Citronella is fresh-smelling and lemony, and although attractive to us, the smell is very overwhelming to insects and will make it difficult to smell other nearby smells. Although very effective when being used, Citronella candles only work when burning. And the sprays that contain citronella will need to be reapplied to the skin every few hours.;

The citronella scent isnt necessarily undesired by flies and insects, rather, the aroma is just so strong that it takes over the insects senses, and frankly makes feeding more difficult for them.;No food to eat means no flies to speak!

How To Keep Flies Away

Getting rid of these pests is not enough. You want to keep flies out of your home. Once rid of them, discourage the re-entry of flies and maggots with these smart strategies for how to get rid of fly infestations.

  • Keep things clean. Flies love open trash cans, uncovered compost bins, and dog droppings. Tidy up after outdoor parties, remove all food scraps, and keep a tight lid on trash cans and compost. If the family pooch does his business in the yard, clean up after him immediately.
  • Unless webs stretch across an area youll walk through or reach into, leave spiders be. Hungry arachnids will devour any flies they can snare.
  • Plant fly-repelling herbs in your home and around the outside of your house. Surround your patio and barbecue area with potted herbs that repel flies. Basil, lavender, mint are excellent choices for getting rid of flies.
  • Watch out for water. Dont leave pools of water to sit stagnant around your house and yard. Flies need to drink water and are drawn to puddles, birdbaths, and soggy patches caused by dripping sprinklers. Getting rid of these sources of water is one way you can get rid of flies.
  • Clean fruit bird feeders. Everyone enjoys watching birds feed on fruit, but flies are bound to crash the party. Get rid of flies by tossing rinds as soon as your feathered friends have finished nibbling on them.
  • Make Your Own Flypaper

    You can make homemade fly paper from a brown paper bag or kraft paper and corn syrup. It is easy but takes a while since the paper needs to soak and dry.

    How to Make Flypaper

    Cut a brown paper bag into 2-inch wide strips. Bring equal parts corn syrup and water to a boil, stirring constantly.Remove the mixture from the heat and add the paper strips. Soak the paper in the syrup for four hours or more.

    Remove the paper and hang them to dry for two to three hours. Hang them with thread or string in fly-infested areas.

    Use Rue As A Fly Deterrent

    Rue is yet another herb that is great at repelling flies both in its natural form and as an essential oil. Rue plants have been reported to be quite effective at repelling flies and can be used near plants, seating areas, and food.

    Additionally, rue can be great when planted out in the garden, in a planter on the patio, and even in a small planter in the kitchen!

    Rue also comes in essential oil, which is great for treating areas that would be difficult to treat otherwise such as curtains, window sills, and other surfaces by using a diluted spray mixture. However, it may be useful to see what effect a rue plant gets you in its natural form to repel flies!

    Types Of Citronella Plants

    There are two types of Citronella plants Citronella Grass and Citronella Geranium. However, when referring to citronella oil and the plant that works best with repelling insects, it is always Citronella Grass.

    Citronella Grass is the plant to go to if youre looking for some in your face, plant-based, insect-be-gone action. The plant itself is a great accent to many gardens and can be easily used as a decorative feature around landscaping while providing the function of keeping insects away.

    With its rounded nature, and what can be said to be a clump of grass, the foliage grows long and out and then down, leaving you with this hearty-looking, green delight. However, if youre planting these babies, theres a way to get them to their highest potential of insect repel. To do this, crushing and crunching the leaves and agitating the foliage a bit will release the oil.;

    Although Citronella Geranium is in the same plant family, it does not do too well with repelling insects. Its a beautiful, purple-flowering plant to look at, but it will not be as effective as Citronella Grass.;

    Make Flypaper Strips At Home To Catch Flies

    The market is flooded with flypapers, sometimes also called fly ribbons, a pest control device. These are made of paper coated with a fragrant, sticky and often poisonous substance which traps flies and other flying insects. The poisonous substance used in these flypapers can be toxic to humans and animals too. So why not use homemade fly papers! They are easy to make and work as efficiently as the commercially available flypapers.

    Get this:

    • Thread

    Do this:

    • Cut 2 inch wide strips from the paper or card. Punch a hoe or two at the top of each strip and thread it to make a loop to hang at the places where flies come.
    • Mix the corn syrup and sugar.
    • Coat one side of each strip with the corn-sugar syrup. If the syrup drips, place a bowl underneath the hanging paper.
    • Now hang these strips where you see the flies most. Theyll get attracted to the sugary syrup and when they land on these strips, theyll get stuck to it.

    Rosemary Effectively Deters Flies

    While most research regarding rosemary as a fly deterrent and repellent is based upon mosquitoes and not other flies, theres a common consensus that the strong, bold scent of rosemary is an incredibly effective deterrent for flies, as their senses easily pick up on rosemary as they approach it.

    The anti-sweet scent of rosemary can be used either as a plant or as an essential oil blend to heighten the strong smell of rosemary.

    If you go the plant route, youll be able to use the herb once its fully grown as well in your favorite dishes!

    For essential oil concentrates, Wondercides Rosemary Indoor Pest Control Spray is a preformulated blend with an essential oil base of cedarwood, rosemary, and sesame essential oils and comes highly regarded to repel flies and crawling insects alike.

    How To Keep June Bugs From Returning

    Firstly, you can try encouraging June bug predators, such as birds, by setting up birdbaths in your garden. Birds love to eat the beetles and their presence may even discourage beetle populations.

    Alternatively, you can sprinkle diatomaceous earth around your yard or patio to keep June bugs away. Try to use a natural, organic food-grade product, as DE can easily come into contact with humans and pets and be walked into the home.

    Vinegar And Dish Soap

    A mixture of vinegar and dish soap can help you trap flies. To use this method, mix about an inch of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a tall glass. Cover the glass with plastic wrap. Secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band and poke small holes in the top.

    Flies will be attracted to the vinegar in the glass and will fly through the holes. However, the dish soap causes the flies to sink instead of being able to land on the vinegar.
