The water will be absorbed by the polymeric sand and it will then harden in between the cracks. The hardened sand will resist weed growth in between the paving stones for quite some time, will help hold the bricks in place, and it also helps stop burrowing insects from making nests under your paving stones.

How Do You Fill Large Gaps In Between Patio Slabs
You can fill large gaps in between patio pavers with regular sand, a DIY mix of concrete and sand or polymeric sand.
To make a DIY mix of sand and concrete, start on a sunny day with more sunny days forecast. The slabs should be dry. Scrape out the old cement or dirt or leaves. Blow off the patio or use a shop vac to vacuum up the debris.

Flagstones form a sturdy base for a patio, and the variety of sizes, shapes and colors allow the installer to create unique patterns and designs. As reliable as these stones are, weathering and time will eventually wear down the stones, leading to cracks in the stones themselves. Patch cracks in flagstones with cement or concrete patches and mortar that will seal up the damage and stop your flagstones from looking broken and worn.
Use a wire brush to scrape away loosened or pointed edges of the crack. Sweep or vacuum up debris with a wet/dry vacuum.
Wear goggles to protect yourself from shrapnel and use a chisel and hammer to undercut the crack. Expand the crack to at least an inch deep. Chisel the bottom of the crack so it looks like an upside down V, with the bottom wider than the top. This will help spread the patching material into the crack.
Sweep or vacuum all debris from chiseling so the area is free of dust. Dampen the crack and the surrounding edges with clean water, but do not let water settle into the crack. There should be no standing water in your repair area.

Once the sealant starts flowing it can be hard to stop and a bigger bead means youll have to work faster. Not to mention, but I will anyway, the huge potential mess you might have. Visualize sealant on your pants, hands, shoes, hair..
Pierce the seal inside the tube with an old wire hanger, the kind you get from the dry cleaners.
Place the tube in your caulking gun and pretend youre Dirty Harry. Just kidding. This step is unnecessary and only meant to make you feel cool .
Squeeze the Sikaflex sealant into the concrete expansion joint and allow it to flow & self-level itself. Add more Sikaflex where its needed.
Voila!!!
Your concrete expansion joint is now watertight and way more unlikely to crack.
