A Modern Minimalist Patio

LEARN & DO How to Decorate Your Patio this Spring – Martha Stewart

Not every home is surrounded by trees and copious shrubbery, so;Zona Architekci;designed this modern patio to take advantage of the clean lines and architectural features of the house. This patio decorating idea focuses on modular furniture that mimics the angles of the house and features two sliding screens that visually define the edge of the patio. The wooden arbor structure above make the space feel cozier by limiting the height without totally closing it in.

Make A List Of Patio Furniture Needs

Begin by thinking about how you would like your outdoor space to function. Do you want it to serve as a dining area on warm summer nights? Do you plan to host your next dinner party or your child’s birthday party in the space? Or do you envision a peaceful reading nook tucked into your outdoor room?

Make a list of the activities you would like to do in the space and use it as a guide to determine what type of patio furniture is necessary. If the primary function of your 12×16-foot patio is to host casual evening cocktails, for example, there is no need for a dining table. Instead, opt for ample comfortable seating, several side tables, and a fire pit.

Celebrate Spring On The Patio With Potted Bulb Plants

Bulbs such as tulip plants are to spring what fall foliage is to autumn. Make sure you will be able to enjoy some of your favorite spring-flowering bulbs from a comfortable seat on your patio. If you live in an urban area and cannot grow the plants in the ground around your patio, simply grow them in containers, as in this photo.

Hi Brooke, I can envison lots and lots of container pots with either veggies or colorful flowers, also a few hainging ones. Here’s a link to some more “serious” ideas. You could divide the length up a bit and have one area for gardening and anohter for a couple of chairs in which to “hill”.

  • Annie on Apr 26, 2020

I can see veggies growing in pots. You could grow salad makings in pots and even garlic and carrots could go into deep containers. Plus there would still be a small sitting area possible.

  • Ken Erickson on Apr 26, 2020

Someone just posted a ladder and planter herb garden project today. I would probably set out a couple of chairs and small table so you can enjoy the space with you beverage and snack of choice.

  • K. Rupp on Apr 26, 2020

Hi Brooke, you could make that balcony really cute. You could put a small outdoor couch with cushions against that back wall so you can sit outside. Use some cute outdoor pillows. Add an outdoor rug that fits. You can add a little bistro set with some cushions that match. Get yourself a pretty ceramic potted plant like a tall palm. If you are crafty/handy and like projects….I just think this is the coolest for your situation:

Not Considering The Summer

You are likely to host many guests in different seasons. What about the time when you are hosting a summer party or having a friend or two over to chill on the poolside? Consider adding some seats in areas where there is proper shade. Make use of your yard to place the seating under the tree. Additionally, also add umbrellas, pergolas, awnings, etc., to add shade wherever you can. You need to create a balance in how you have exposed the furniture arrangement to natural elements.

Make A Seating Statement

We love a great rocking chair or lounge set, but we really love a basket chair. Its comfortable, whimsical, and oh-so-stylish. This conversation chair from Lowes is so cute, itll make the person sitting in it feel like theyre in their own little world, especially if they also happen to be engrossed in one of the best summer reads. The rattan canopy is held firmly in place thanks to the light brown metal frame, and cozy cushions are made with water-resistant fabric to help protect them from fickle summer weather. Just be careful: Once you sit down in this sweet seat, you may never want to stand up.

Invest In Quality Patio Furniture

How to decorate your patio on a budget

The old adage “you get what you pay for” is generally true for patio furniture. Plastic resin chairs or side tables, for example, might look great on the shelf and will keep their good looks for a year or two out in the sun, but in time they will become brittle and lose their vibrant coloring. The same is true for some wood products and wicker pieces. Shop with care, checking consumer reports and reviews, before making a big purchase. If you’re sticking to a budget, plan to splurge on items that will be used most often, such as a comfortable patio chair or a durable dining table. You can save on smaller accessories such as pillows and accent tables.

Stay On Top Of Weeding

While were talking patio ideas on a budget, keeping on top of the weeding is a cheap way to make any patio a whole lot lovelier. Its inevitable that weeds will take the opportunity to make themselves a home between the pavers, so get in the habit of rooting them out as soon as they appear.

We like this Patio Weeding Knife from Annabel James because its specially made for the job, helping you hook the offenders out from narrow spaces. Itll work beautifully on moss, too, so you can keep your patio greenery-free.

Grow Fragrant Flowers For The Sweet Smell Of Success

Here is something that neither cactus nor barberry offer your patio: sweet fragrance. The latter is precisely what the owners of this patio have chosen. It is festooned with fragrant flowers. The wonderful smell coming from flowers such as Easter lilies adds to your quality of life on the patio. What floral smells attract you the most?
