I wanted to see for myself if the product could do just as good as a power washer but without all the effort and water consumption. My degree is in chemistry and an experiment seemed like a natural step to take. So I treated one section of our patio and not the other with Wet & Forget. The time frame was 9 months . I chose this period of the year because dirt collects on top of our patio stones over the winter months.

Weeds in damp soil pull out easier than those in dry soil. If it hasnt recently rained, pour water onto your work area, and let it soak in before you get started.

2Wear Gloves

Wear tight-fitting gloves with good grip.I know some people avoid wearing garden gloves. Personally, I cant stand the feeling of dirt pressing under my finger nails and I like the added strength a good glove provides for pinching weeds at the ground level and pulling them out, roots and all.

3Use the Right Tools

Our driveway and walkway have narrow cracks and wider ones.

Most weeds in the narrow cracks come out by hand. Otherwise a serrated kitchen knife does the trick.

If you want to invest in this for the future, there are also various tools sold as crack weeders or Dutch / hand hoes, that can reach in the narrow gaps and pull the roots out .

4Keep Entertained

A job like this cannot be rushed. I load up my phone with favorite podcasts and wear earbuds while I work. You might prefer a playlist of favorite songs.

5Wear Knee Pads

I have really sensitive knees and use knee pads all the time in the garden. It sure beats the feeling of kneeling on a stone. Yow! And, for a job that may take a few hours, you might as well be as comfortable as possible.

Then take your choice of filler from sand to rock sediment and spread it around. Using a broom to refill the cracks and space.  

This will accomplish two good things.

Apply Polymeric Sand To Stop The Growth Of Weeds Between Paving Stones

In the old days, patio owners were removing old contaminated sands from cracks & sand between pavers in patio or bricks of brick patio. They used to fill up the crevices in stone pavers or brick patio with new or fresh sands between pavers.

Unfortunately, it alleviated weed growth only for a limited period of seasons. It proves expensive when carried out frequently within a short span. It also looses the bonds of the structure of the stone-brick patio due to frequent operations.

Fortunately, today we have the latest technologies called artificial sand granules made from polymeric chemicals. It binds or glues the sand particles after activation by water. Upon drying, it gets hard and cements the stones in pavers or bricks in brick patio to prevent the invasion of seeds of weeds.

The prevention mechanism of polymeric sand is as follows.

EnviroSand is a known brand in polymeric sand manufacturers. It has plant glue, which converts into a gel when wetted with water. The gel prevents washout of sands and acts as the first line of defense to stop weed growth. Our driveway, it was an eyesore.

We had full intentions of tearing it all up this summer, levelling the bed and relaying the bricks.  We had blocked off some time for this.  Summer rolled along.  Time grew short and we started to realize that the time we had for it was likely not enough to get it all done.

Robin devised a plan whereby we remove the weeds and sand and re-lay new, polymeric sand without actually moving the bricks.  Genius!  But could it be done on time and without us dying of sunstroke?

OK, lets just have a good look at how bad the driveway/our maintenance of it was:

In my years, Ive heard many explanations of where the weeds come from. In most cases, they were wrong.

The #1 misconception is that the weeds come from beneath the pavers. People that believe this, will ask us to install a weed mat beneath the pavers prior to installing them. However, this is not where the weeds come from and this certainly is not how you keep weeds from growing between your pavers.

99% of the time, weeds in pavers start from seeds blown in from weeds that are around the patio. Chances are, if you have lots of weeds in your pavers you probably also have lots of weeds in your yard. If you dont believe me, see how Colorado State University says weeds start growing.

If your lawn is free of weeds, the seeds could be blowing in from your friendly neighbors yard. Once you have a couple weeds in your patio, they will start to spread. Some types of weeds like crabgrass can spread and take over your entire patio.

Spray An Organic Solution

If youd rather not mess the environment or risk your health, you can still kill the weeds even from the very narrow cracks between bricks- by spraying a DIY cocktail of liquid dish, vinegar, and salt on the weeds.

Vinegar has acetic acid and will quickly draw moisture from the weeds making them wilt and die when combined with salt.

Scrap Them Off With A Crack Scraper For Weeds

We guesstimated the number of bags to buy, based on square footage in our driveway, minus the fact that we were only topping up, plus the fact that most estimates are based on larger pavers vs bricks.

We ended up buying 3 bags too many but are keeping them for future projects .

If you have never used Polymeric Sand, it is a wonderful product. 

On new construction, if you follow all the steps in the video, you are buying yourself 4-5 years of completely maintenance-free patio/walkway. 

Even after that time frame, the weeding and upkeep are much less than regular sand, which means less time/ nasty sprays will have to be employed.

I didnt do as thorough a job as I should have when blowing, so some haze is evident in some areas.  I have decided to call those spots, extra traction zones for winter.  You cant argue the improvement in appearance, though.

Were very happy and total time was a little over 2 days versus the unrealistic week we thought we could tear the whole thing up and re-lay it in.
