. Similarly one may ask, how do you hang outdoor curtains on a metal pergola?

The easiest way to install an outdoor curtain is with a tension rod placed inside the supports of a screened porch or pergola wall. Curtain rods made for outdoor use can also be installed on a wall, ceiling or inside mount. Choose fabric that is fade- and mildew-resistant, and manufactured for outdoor use.

Subsequently, question is, what fabric is best for outdoor curtains? Olefin. Fabrics woven from solution-dyed olefin yarns make an excellent fabric for outdoor curtain projects. Olefin fabric such as Phifer’s GeoBella® line is lightweight, soft, extremely durable, and doesn’t fade in the sunshine.

Hereof, how do you hang curtains on a pergola?

Cut a small x with fabric scissors at each mark and follow the directions on your grommet kit to place a grommet at each spot. You’ll be hanging your curtains in each of the corners of your pergola, so decide how far out you want your curtains to hang.

Should outdoor curtains touch the ground?

The fabric should just touch the floor or hover half an inch above. This is also a great approach for cafécurtains , which work well in spots like the kitchen and bathroom, where long drapes aren’t practical.

One: Determine Your Measurements

Weve already talked a bit about this, but the first thing youll want to do is figure out how high and how wide you want your curtains to be from the corner of your window.

For this, I just grabbed my first curtain rod bracket and held it up on the wall and played around with the spacing until I found something I liked. I knew I wanted the top of the bracket to be about 3 below the ceiling, and in this specific space I wanted it to be as far away from the window as it feasibly could be. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to have the bracket somewhere around 10-12 from the window .

Once you know where you want your bracket to sit, measure exactly where the two screws should be placed . Youll use this to create your template. This is definitely the easiest way to do it if youre new to hanging curtains or if youve got multiple windows to hang them on. If youre working in a weird space like ours where the spacing isnt the same on both sides, it may be easier to just measure and mark on the walls.

Do Know Your Style And Plan Accordingly

I used to love a bold, patterned curtain but over the years Ive learned that my style really leans towards using simpler curtains and allowing other parts of the room to be the star.

I like for my curtains to quietly layer into the space and feel like kind of a background character. You might prefer something that feels bold and exciting and thats fine! But if you try to go against your instincts and do something different because its trendy or someone else suggests it, youll be disappointed.

When we were planning this project, I heard from some people who were so disappointed that we werent doing something with some pattern, other people who felt like it would look terrible if it was anything but white, and still other people who thought we should get a couple of different colors and change them out seasonally!

The lesson here is that we all approach curtains differently, and thats fine! Just know yourself well enough to stay away from the patterned curtains if you actually prefer something plain.

Six: Hang Those Curtains

Once your brackets are all in place, youre ready to slide the curtains on and put the rod up! You just hung curtains!

Im obsessed with our new gold velvet curtains in here and, while I was skeptical of them at first, I think they were definitely the right choice.

One set of curtains down, about a zillion more to go!

Quick and easy updates brought springtime charm to the covered deck of the 2015 HGTV Spring House.

An outdoor space is the perfect place to entertain friends and family, or to sit and have a cup of coffee before you start your day. But if the sun is too hot, or if your neighbors seem close enough to lean over the porch rail and swipe a burger off the grill, outdoor curtains, patio shades or outdoor blinds might just do the trick.

Choosing the Right Treatment

Outdoor blinds, patio shades and outdoor curtains all provide privacy and sun protection. But they have different looks and, in some cases different levels of both.

Outdoor Curtains

Outdoor curtains create an elegant, flowing look. Because they move in the breeze, letting sunlight into the space, they create a dappled effect, but dont provide as much continuous shade as the other types. When hung over a veranda or pergola entry, they can take on the appearance of an elegant, old-world portiere.

Take the curtains down in the winter to launder them and then hang them again in the spring.

Choose Curtain Rods And Determine The Proper Placement

Proper installation starts before you break out the tools. You must first choose where to hang curtain rods and select the best type for your windows:

  • Measure the width of your window frame. Take note of this measurement.
  • Allow about 3 inches on each side of the window. Mark the wall with a pencil to indicate this area. By doing so, youll make sure you get adequate light when the curtains are open.
  • Make a mark about four inches above your window for mounting hardware. This is a traditional height, though you can cheat an inch or so, either way, depending on the height of your ceiling and the length of your finished curtains.
  • For grommet curtains, you will need to take into account the placement of the grommet. On most curtains, the grommet is set down about 1 inch from the top of the panel. This means the curtain will hang about 1 1/4 inch shorter than the curtain length. To get the right length measurement for grommet curtains, measure from the very top of the curtain to the bottom.

How To Protect Your Porch From Bugs Using This Quick And Cheap Solution For Diy Outdoor Curtains

If youve been following along on my , you probably already saw this post coming.

I love it when a light bulb moment ends up working out even better than you could have imagined! For the past year, weve slowly been working on sprucing up our back porch.

This is where we left off a few months ago after limewashing the brick and painting the doors this winter:

But one thing we always battled were the bugs in the summer, especially at night. But we didnt want to go through the expense and labor of adding screens because we really loved having the space feel open and be a part of the backyard.

I was in IKEA a couple of weeks ago though and discovered these mosquito net curtains for $5 per pair. And it hit me outdoor curtain screens!

Supplied Used:

The grand total came to under $100 for 6, roughly $16 each.

I wanted to make sure they wouldnt yellow and turn gross in the rain and sun, so it was worth spending an extra $10 on two bottles of Scotchgard Heavy Duty Water Shield and spraying them down to make them weather-proof.

Fingers crossed it works! But considering its designed to protect fabrics outdoors, Im really optimistic on this one.

I picked up 6 tension rods at Walmart for about $6 each, and Robert and I hung them up as high as we could, close to our porch ceiling, using Command hooks. It was super quick and causes no damage at all, so if we ever decide to take them down, we wont have to worry about any screw holes to patch.

How To Hang Curtains With Wire

Setting up your outdoor curtains with wire can be an inexpensive way to decorate your backyard. For this method, you will need heavy-gauge steel wire rope, eye hooks, and wall anchors.

First, use the eye hooks and wall anchors to secure one end of the wire to a nearby structure, such as a beam or post of your patio or the exterior of your house. Keep the wire taut as you secure it to an opposing structure. Before securing it, run the wire through the curtain grommets or panel.

If you are using steel wire or rope to mount your curtains across a large space, you may want to add additional supports otherwise, it could droop in the middle.

How To Keep Outdoor Curtains From Blowing In The Wind

Hang Curtains on a Lattice Alumawood patio with 3×8 Alumarod kit by Alumahangers.com

After a few summers with our drapes blowing away every time we needed to use them, we finally figured out a solution to keep them from blowing. We realized that the drapes needed to be attached to keep them from blowing.

We purchased small clips from IKEA meant to be used for sliding drapery. When we put the drapes down, we used the small clips to clip the drapes to each other along the sides. We then clipped the curtain closest to the beam to the beam. This ended up making one large curtain that was attached to the side post of the deck. So when the wind blew, the curtains stayed mostly in place.

We tried using curtain weights, but they did not work. Clipping the curtains to each other worked much better. We keep a small bowl of the clips outside on our coffee table, so they are close by when we need them.

You can also use oversized paper clips. Just make sure you take them inside when youre done with them.

Cutting The Wire Into Proper Size

Next, youll need to get the measurements for distance between both hooks that you just fixed onto studs. Now add around twelve inches extra to this figure. After that, you need to cut the aircraft cable into this dimension. You can simply use a wire cutter for the cutting process.

On one end of the cable, you need to loop and create a 7 inches long tail. To secure the loops, youll need at least two or more than that wire rope clips. Make sure to securely loop them with the clips. You should use a screwdriver or adjustable wrench for tightening those clips. Now bring a one looped end to the walls hook that you installed earlier. Simply hang it onto the hook.

Apply The Hooks To The Wall

Take one of your 3M Command hooks, take off the paper backing on the adhesive strips, and line the hook up on the wall using the pencil mark for guidance. Press it on the surface well, holding for at least 30 seconds, then let it be for at least a half hour. Repeat the same for the other side. Don’t be in a rush. Leave the hooks on for longer to be safe.

Instructions on the back of the packaging recommend sliding the hook up and off and then pressing the base firmly for 30 seconds. And then sliding the hook back on for use, to make sure you’re applying enough pressure in the right spot.

How To Hang Curtains

Alumahangers

Last week Corey and I finally got around to hanging curtains in our master bedroom and, as always, Im in awe of how big of a difference they make in the room as a whole. Theres just something about curtains that brings it aaaaaaall together and makes it feel a little more polished, you know?

If you arent all caught up on our bedroom, we recently added DIY picture molding to the entire room and painted it this gorgeous, luxurious blue , and then we held a curtain fashion show to determine what color we should do for the curtains in here.

Ill admit, I was skeptical about the gold curtains. But, my goodness, were they ever the right choice. Im so in love with how it turned out, and they really truly bring the room together in a way I never could have anticipated!

I hung these curtain rods myself it was my first time hanging curtains and I needed quite a few pointers from Corey as I worked. So, I figured there were probably some of you out there who dont know how to do it either! So I put together this post with all of the tips and tricks I learned about how to hang curtains, along with a few other things you should know if youre going to embark on a curtain hanging adventure in your own home.

Ill get to the step-by-step in just a moment , but here are a few basic DOs and DONTs first.

Two : Make Your Template

Once you know your measurements, you can make a simple template out of cardboard to make the rest of the job easier. Grab a rectangular piece of cardboard and draw lines across it for both the height and width measurements, then use your bracket to mark on the cardboard where your screw holes should be.

I dont have any pictures of this because we didnt do it for this particular curtain hanging project, but you can get a really good overview of what the process looks like on this post from Young House Love!

Whether or not you use the template, be sure to use a level when making your markings to make sure the bracket is hung nice and straight!

Marking Height On Stud Location

For this step, youll need a stud finder. Simply use it for locating studs on both walls, which will have the curtain in between. On each stud, you need to mark down both edges. Use a pencil or marker to make a visible mark. Now you need to measure height at which youd like the curtain to hang from. You can do this from the ceiling or even up from floor. Simply use same marker to mark down your preferred height on the stud locations.

Hanging Outdoor Curtains Without Curtain Rods

HOW TO MAKE CURTAIN RODS FOR PATIO and INSTALL OUTDOOR CURTAINS

Drapery rods are an easy, simple solution for mounting outdoor curtains around your deck or patio area. However, some exterior spaces dont have the kind of structure that supports rod installation. If this is the case for your patio, consider using heavy-gauge exterior steel wire rope to mount your draperies.

Eye hooks and wall anchors can be used to secure one end of the wire to a nearby structure, post, beam or the exterior of your home. Run the other side of the steel wire through the grommets or tab top on each drapery panel you want to hang before mounting the other side with additional eye hooks and wall anchors.
