Step 5: Cover the inside of the pad with Landscape Fabric; this is so the sand does not fall through the holes.
Step 6: Add a ¼” of bedding sand to the field area and spread it around making sure the entire area is compactedand level.
Step 7: Install the 30mm pavers on top of the sand according to your desired layout.
Step 8: Sweep sand into joint and blow off any excess sand left on surface of pavers

Time: Covering a patio with decking typically takes a weekend or two. This patio took much more time—five long days. That’s partly because it’s a big one . The grid pattern formed with different-colored decking also added a few hours to the job. But the biggest time factor was the unevenness of the patio surface. All those ridges and sunken spots meant hours of tedious shimming under the sleepers to form a flat surface for the decking .
Cost: The cost of building a patio deck depends mostly on the decking you choose. Decking ranges from about $1.50 per sq. ft. for treated wood to more than $10 per sq. ft. for a top-grade manufactured product. The other materials for this project add up to about $1.50 per sq. ft., so your total cost could be anywhere from $3 to $12 per sq. ft. For looks and durability, we used two different colors of decking made from PVC, but there are less expensive alternatives.
Tools: Aside from standard carpentry tools, you’ll need a hammer drill for this project. You can get a hammer drill for less than $50 that will do the job. But consider spending $100 or more. Even a very small patio will require more than 50 holes, and a more powerful drill will make that chore a lot easier. Also consider buying an impact driver. Impact drivers pack a lot more torque than standard drills or drivers and will drive concrete screws much better. Most models are cordless, but you can still find inexpensive corded models online.
Which Material Can You Use Between Concrete And Pavers
Although there are other types of materials, the answer to this question comes down to two options: Sand or bituminous.
The process of installing pavers over sand and bituminous is quite similar to the typical installation. The difference is that it’s necessary to place draining holes in the lower areas, giving the water that seeps into joints a place to escape.
In general, the two materials have very similar benefits and work well. However, in places where there is heavy traffic, the use of sand alone is not recommended. That’s because the sand can shift. Which Types Of Pavers Can Be Installed Over Concrete
This is entirely left up to your discretion! Any type of stone or manufactured paver that could normally be installed as a patio can be laid on top of existing concrete. Be sure to check out all of your options to ensure that you select the right type of pavers for your project goals.
You might choose from flagstone, bluestone, brick, manufactured concrete or interlocking pavers and more. You’ll also have the ability to select from irregular or dimension cut pavers. Step 8 Finish With Regular Or Polymeric Joint Sand
Using a broom, spread sand over the patio and into the gaps between the pavers. Spread over small areas before moving onto the next one. Go back and forth over the gaps until no more sand will fit. Once you have swept the sand into the paver joints, a hand tamp should be used over the entire paver area in order to “vibrate” the sand further into the joints.
This tamping procedure will insure that the maximum amount of sand is holding the pavers in place. Continue to add sand until the joints are full.
NOTE:
There are two types of joint sand. Polymeric joint sand will essentially harden like concrete between your pavers. It has several advantages: It is stable, so the sand won’t end up on the top of your pavers; it allows you to power wash your patio without displacing the joint sand; it gives the patio a cleaner, more finished look. Alternatively you can use traditional joint sand, but you will need to re apply it each year. For the purposes of these instructions we will refer to Polymeric sand since it requires a few extra steps than plain joint sand.

Step 10 Backfill And Finish Your New Patio Design
Since your new patio is by nature of a higher elevation than your old concrete slab you must address the now exposed edge. There are a few ways to do so.
The first is to back fill the area with topsoil that slowly tapers away from the patio. You can then plant grass seed in the top soil and have a finished yard right up to your new patio.
The second option is to install a short retaining or edger stone some distance from the edge of your patio and install mulch in the area in-between to use as a planting bed to further enhance you project.

Lay The Sleepers And Predrill For Concrete Screws
The sleepers don’t have to be level; they can follow the slope of your patio. But they do need to form a flat plane. If your patio is in good shape, you’ll get a flat plane automatically. If your patio has ridges and sunken areas, you’ll spend lots of time fussing with shims.
To preview the situation, lay a straight board across the patio in a few spots. Look for the highest hump in the patio and fasten your first sleeper there. Then work outward from the high spot, adding sleepers and checking for flatness along each sleeper and across them. Add shims to raise low spots.
Drill through sleepers, spacers and into the concrete with a hammer drill, then drive in concrete screws. Overhang the sleepers along one edge of the patio and trim them to exact length later.

Can Pavers Be Installed Over Existing Concrete
Yes, it’s possible, it’s not our go-to choice, but it’s faster and cheaper. That, of course, as long as the concrete is in good condition, which is a crucial point to consider. You have to evaluate the integrity of the concrete slab. Small cracks and stains won’t be a problem. Now, larger cracks will show severe signs of surface damage.
Another vital aspect to observe is whether the site has adequate drainage or not. Make sure that the area where you have installed the concrete isn’t suffering from any erosion effect. Rainwater runoff, for instance, can cause problems in the future.
The erosion process can remove the soil layers below the concrete, leading to problems ranging from cracks and small unevenness to huge craters. In a few years, even months, you can be facing severe structural damage issues on your paver patio.
With that said, installing pavers over concrete is not your best choice. One of the most evident benefits of pavers is their flexibility. Pavers are designed to be flexible with the surface. That is, they will respond much better to temperature and load variations if installed over a standard gravel and sand base.

Step 1: Gather All Tools And Materials Needed
To get this project done, we used the following materials:
Thin Concrete Pavers Versus Thin Brick Pavers
Thin brick pavers come in many different colors and their durability and color ranges are superior to thin concrete pavers, although the user must understand that they are two completely different products, although there end use is the same.
Thin pavers over concrete that are made from concrete can often be sand set with the perimeter pieces locked in with the use of a cementitious material and our concrete pavers with locking hubs work great in sand setting and keeping under 2 inches of added height.
On the other hand, using Thin brick pavers that are made from clay rather than concrete are generally 7/16 to 3/4 inch in thickness and must be applied with a mortar base which is time consuming and expensive.
How Often Should You Pressure Wash Your Patio
For the best results, clean a driveway every six months – this can be done on a DIY basis or by hiring a professional cleaning company. Frequent pressure washing helps to prevent dirt and grime from settling into cracks. Consider a Spring and Autumn spruce up to get rid of the build-up of dirt, grime, mold, and algae.
Pavers Over Concrete: Assemble The Materials
The materials for this 12 x 14-ft. patio cost about $850, or $5 per sq. ft. Using less expensive pavers, you could cut the cost by almost half. Most landscape suppliers and home centers stock all the materials, but you may have to do a little hunting for the right combination of pavers. The pavers used for the border must be at least 3/4 in. thicker than the “field” pavers, which cover the area between the borders. That thickness difference will allow for a bed of sand under the field. A difference of more than 3/4 in. is fine; you’ll just need a little more sand. If you can’t find thick pavers you like, consider retaining wall cap blocks for the border. We used cement pavers for the border and clay pavers for the field.
To estimate how much sand you’ll need, grab your calculator. First determine the square footage of the sand bed. Then divide that number by 12 for a 1-in. bed or 18 for a 3/4-in. bed. That will tell you how many cubic feet of sand to get. You can have a load of sand delivered or save the delivery fee by picking up a load yourself with a truck or trailer. Most home centers also sell bagged sand. A 50-lb. bag costs about $3.
Installing Brick Pavers Over A Concrete Slab

With brick pavers, you can lay them right on top of the concrete without having to take a jackhammer to it. It is a pretty simple process that can be done in no time. Here are the basics you need to know so you can install brick pavers over the concrete you are trying to conceal.
Measure the Concrete Slab
Take your tape measure and determine the dimensions of the slab. Take the length times the width to determine how many square feet of pavers you will need to purchase. You should also buy an extra 5% – 10% to account for waste.
Prepare the Slab
Make sure that you have the concrete slab clean and ready for installation. You should sweep the slab and remove any dirt or dust.
Install the Border
Go around the edge of the concrete slab and install a border of brick pavers. Use liquid nails or another suitable adhesive to make sure that they stick. Allow the adhesive to dry before you do anything else around the pavers. This outside layer will provide a level of stability for the entire project. Since the other pavers will be installed in the sand, it will help keep everything solid once it is installed.

A big part of the problem was our concrete walkway and stairs.
As a part of our curb appeal update this summer, we planned on jacking up all of the old concrete and replacing it with new concrete. The contractors we contacted were all booked and expensive, so we started thinking of other ideas. Would it be possible to just cover it with new pavers instead? After lots of research, the answer was yes! It’s possible, and totally doable, to cover old concrete with pavers. There’s just a few caveats:
#1: Your surface needs to be intact and solid. If you have a crumbling surface, this project won’t work without some extra prep work.
#2: Your surface needs to be relatively flat without any large cracks or bumps in it.
Our walkway was pretty solid with the exception of two cracks about 1/2? high, which we knew we could fix with proper prep. We grabbed a few $1 concrete pavers from Lowe’s and placed them in a diamond pattern to see if we liked the way they looked.
