Compact With Stone Dust
Spread stone dust all over the surface of the pavers. Then use a plastic bristle broom to sweep it across the surface. The dust works by filling the small crevices between the pavers, and this provides a very compact design for durability.
Observe the crevices to see if they are fully closed with dirt. If not, add some more stone dust and sweep across. The presence of the small crevices is an indicator the pavers are far from being completely compact.
Some people might prefer sand but I insist on stone dust. Stone dust is finer and will thus easily fit into the crevices for a more compacted design. Sand, on the other hand, has larger particles that will be hard to fit into the crevices, and this leaves a shaky paver design. To prevent your pavers from shifting or spreading in future, install a paver edging.

Lay Down The Patio Pavers
Place down the patio pavers in whatever pattern you desire. Regardless of what the pattern looks like, the most important thing is to ensure that the patio pavers are flush against each other. Start laying down the pavers at one end or corner and then work your way across. After you have completed a small section, place a wood board across of it and gently hit it with a hammer to embed the bricks in the dirt and level them with each other. Continue until you have laid all of the patio pavers.

Assess your slab This project will work with most patios. Surface damage like flaking, chips and craters is no problem. But a few conditions make this method a no-go:
- A too-low threshold. Door thresholds have to be high enough above the existing patio to allow for the thickness of the border pavers, plus an extra 3/4 in. to allow for frost heaverising of the slab when the soil freezes.
- Expanding cracks. This method will work over most crackswhich grow and shrink with seasonal ground movement. But if you have a crack that has noticeably grown in recent years, this method is risky. The crack may eventually telegraph through the pavers, creating a hump or gaps.

How Much Paver Base Do I Need
For example, for an area that measures 60 square feet, youll need about 60 12- x 12-inch paver stones. Youll be using four inches of gravel, which is 1/3 of a yard, for a paver base. To figure out how many cubic feet of gravel you will need, multiply your square footage by 1/3.

I actually discovered I had 7 loose steps, I thought there were only 3! But once I started pressing on them I realized there were more. So I grabbed some of this landscape adhesive and went to work.
These pavers came off easily and when I flipped them over there was a lot of dirt that had gotten in there. That needed to be cleaned out.
Once cleaned I generously spread the landscape adhesive all over the pavers and where they go on the patio.
Put the pavers back in place and let everything dry for a good 24 hours. I did this step between power washing and laying the sand so the sand wouldnt be disturbed when I removed the pavers.

Remove The Grass Around The Space

This helps prevent any movement or erosion.

How To Prepare A Good Base For Laying Outdoor Pavers
Step 1 Measure area to be paved, then mark edges using set-out paint to give you a guide.
Step 2 Use wheelbarrow to lay out road base in a series of mounds .
Step 3 Spread out road base roughly with shovel, then level with levelling rake. Use tape measure to gauge a depth of about 70mm
Step 4 Damp down road base using hose then, using plate compactor, compact base to reduce its depth by about 10mm
Step 5 Lay out paving sand over road base, again in a series of mounds to facilitate even spreading.
Step 6 Level sand with rake to leave a layer 20-30mm thick.
Step 7 Lay screed rails on eitherside of sand bed, so their surface sits at finished level you are after. Tip, poly tubing and lengths of timber make ideal screed rails
Step 8 Level sand layer using screed and spirit level. Be sure to work backwards so you dont disturb the finished surface.
