How To Build Your Own Wooden Gazebo

If you love relaxing and entertaining from your backyard, you need to consider having a functional outdoor structure for your convenience. You need to be able to enjoy the outdoor space and utilize the beautiful warm weather when you get an opportunity. A pergola is one of the simplest structures that you can put up in your backyard. Here are reasons why you should consider having a pergola in your outdoor space.

    Provides a Shade

When the winter season comes to an end, the only thing that comes to your mind is basking in the outdoors and enjoying the warm weather. Unfortunately, the suns rays can do more harm to our skin than good. If you expose yourself to direct sun for long, you might get extreme sunburns and even worse, skin cancer.

Pergolas may not provide you with full shade, but they will still shade you from direct rays from the sun. You will be able to enjoy the warm breeze of your outdoor space as you read your book or lounge outside in a comfortable chair.

You can add more shade by covering the pillars with clothing or installing climbing vines that have thick leaves and blossoms. Having a pergola allows you to enjoy and spend more time outdoors without risking yourself to health issues.

No one likes to deal with building permits, but they are usually required when building an outdoor structure. Building codes and regulations vary from one location to the next. In most places, a structure that is 100 square feet or less does not require a permit. However, check with the building permit office for local regulations in your area, to avoid getting a fine later.

Before building any outdoor structure, contact your local utility company to check for underground utility lines. The number 811 is the federally designated “call before you dig” number. It’s there to help homeowners and professionals identify where underground lines are buried to avoid damage.

Whether you have DIY gazebo plans or are assembling a pre-made kit, study your plans before you begin. A gazebo is a free-standing structure with open sides. It can be rectangular, round, oval but the traditional shape is octagonal. Some gazebo types include metal gazebos or wood gazebos.

There are many sizes of gazebos to consider but the popular sizes are 10 x 10 gazebos or 10 x 12 gazebos. For more inspiration, take a look at Home Depot’s DIY gazebo kits for backyard gazebo ideas.

How Much Does A Timber Pergola Cost*

Timber pergolas also come in kit form or can be custom made for you. As a rough guide, a 5×3 metre timber pergola kit might cost:

    • $2300 for a treated pine pergola with no roof
    • $2900 for a hardwood pergola with no roof
    • $2600 for a treated pine pergola with a Colorbond roof
    • $3800 for a hardwood flat roof pergola with an insulated Colorbond roof

These prices are also approximate and are for the kit alone, not including installation. In some states, a licensed builder will need to install a timber pergola.

A custom made pergola will cost more than a timber kit pergola. The cost will depend on the:

    • Complexity of the design
    • Size of the pergola
    • Type of timber used

Treated pine is the least expensive timber and is treated for inground or above-ground applications. Hardwoods will cost more, depending on the hardwood you choose, which needs to stand up to rain and sun. A pergola builder can suggest hardwoods that will be suitable for your area and their prices.

    How To Build A Gazebo

Building your own pergola is labor-intensive but simple to understand. Just six posts define the perimeter of this 8-foot by 16-foot structure. At top is a lightweight partial cover constructed of one-by-threesideal for trailing plants.

The most difficult part of building this pergola is digging the post holes, then setting four-by-four posts in concrete in those holes. Renting a gas-powered earth auger for one day is usually sufficient time to dig those holes. Otherwise, if the soil is soft and you have a post hole digger, you can use that.

You may need to apply for a building permit before building a DIY pergola. A pergola is often classified as an outdoor detached accessory structureby local permitting offices.

    The Mighty Helpful Gazebo Plan

Truly a gazebo with a classic design! Youwill find this challenging and at the same time very interesting because thisgazebo does not have a regular shape. It has an octagonal design and thereforeyou need to construct this side after side. First, this structure was notmerely raised from the ground. The best side was chosen where there were no lowlying trees that can affect the gazebo structure.

The ground was cemented and tiled beforethe layout for the gazebo was started. The structure has narrow yet strongposts that hold the mighty octagonal ceiling and heavy shingled roofing.Balusters line the bottom part of the walls of the gazebo creating a privatearea to dine or relax.

This gazebo was constructed in the midst ofa lovely garden making it the highlight of the area. This is a moderatelydifficult build and not for a beginner at all.
