Diy Pergola Cover Ideas: 7 Ways To Protect Your Patio From Sun And Rain

Wanda Simone

In the summer, I love to grill and entertain outdoors. But since I live in an area that often gets lots of sun and afternoon rainstorms, my outdoor cookouts are either really hot or getting rained out. To fix that issue, I went on a hunt for ways I could cover the patio around my outdoor kitchen and came up with these DIY pergola cover ideas – some that just provide lots of shade, and some that are waterproof.

Back in the spring, I did a deck and patio makeover that included sprucing up my outdoor kitchen area.

Now that it’s looking good, I’ve been doing a lot more grilling out there.

And while I love my new updated cooking space, there’s one thing missing. And that’s a cover for the pergola that goes over my outdoor kitchen area.

While the pergola provides some shade, it isn’t very helpful during the day when the sun is directly overhead And it doesn’t provide any protection at all when it’s raining.

Not that I expect to be standing out there all day in the rain. But here in South Carolina, we tend to get a lot of 15 minute rain storms in the afternoon. Which always seem to occur right after I have put the food on the grill.

So I would love to be able to stay out there and not get soaked.

Which is why I’ve been searching for DIY pergola cover ideas to provide some extra shade and rain protection for my little grilling area patio.

Backyard Shade Ideas: Test Out New Awnings With This Online Design Tool

Not only does backyard shading protect from harmful UV rays, it also adds a pop of color and can bring together your furniture decor.

Shade. How do we love thee? Let us count the ways. Not only does incorporating shading in your outdoor spaces protect from harmful ultraviolet rays, it also adds a pop of color and can bring together your furniture decor.

Outdoor shading comes in a variety of forms to fit your needs and your available area, ranging from canopies to umbrellas. For patios, we recommend hanging sail shades from your wall or attaching an awning. Luckily, outdoor fabric company Sunbrella makes it easy to envision what a new awning would look like in your backyard.

Sunbrella makes durable materials for umbrellas, awnings, furniture, and more. The Sunbrella Shade Studio allows you to upload a photo of your own space—or choose from three sample backyards—and customize the frame and fabric for a new awning. A custom build and installation is an expensive investment, starting around $500, so the Shade Studio is a virtual try-before-you-buy tool.

Once you’ve created a look, you can share it with friends or designers. To bring your idea to life, Sunbrella lists seven partners that build awnings with Sunbrella fabrics, such as Eclipse Shading Systems, Sol-Lux, and .

Step 4: Tack The Canvas To The Frame And Mount The Top Portion

I tried a staple gun, but that didn’t work at all.  The only thing I found that worked to hold the canvas in place were carpet tacks.  But, beware, these will RUST.  Stainless hardware might be available, but would significantly increase the project cost.  I could not find aluminum tacks. With the canvas tacked, the next step is to hang the awning from the top.  For this you need to have used T’s on the upper corners.  The small portion of the T that extends from the canvas is used to hold the awning in place.  Go to the electrical aisle and get 3/4″ conduit clamps.  I primed and painted mine to match the house color.  Use #8 pan head screws, about 1″.  I did not use stainless here either. The awning should hang straight down.

Williams Sonoma Duraclear Tritan Outdoor Highball Glasses

During social gatherings held outside, you often hear that dreaded sound of smashed glass. If you want to host outside, then you can’t go wrong with the Williams Sonoma highball glasses. That’s because they are specifically designed to be used during outdoor activities, like a pool party.

The majority of highballs are made using different types of glass. However, these are manufactured using “Tritan,” a BPA-free plastic. The use of Tritan makes them highly durable. One characteristic of Tritan is its resistance to impact, making them a good option for kids.

You can describe these highball glasses as a rainbow set since they come in different colors. So, if you’re holding a party where there are “adult drinks” and “kiddie drinks,” you can use the different colors to keep track of who is drinking what drink.

Building A Simple Door Awning For The Workshop Backdoor

We like DIY plans that take scrap material that is just lying around and turn it into something practical or useful – and that’s exactly what this resourceful YouTuber does. With some old scrap material from his workshop, he produces an awning that does a great job of stopping the water dripping into the door. And if you want to learn how, check out his video.

These Ralph Lauren highball glasses are for people who want to serve their drinks in high-class style and elegance. Like every other Ralph Lauren product, you know great care and thought were invested when designing these highball glasses.

They’re handcrafted and manufactured using lead-free crystal glass to promote environmental sustainability and user health. The highball glass has an attractive design that sets it apart from other highball glasses. Slightly below the rim of the glass, a strip of delicately cut glass can be seen. This design was inspired by the coin edge of Ralph Lauren watches.

These highball glasses have a thick base which ensures the glass is strong, well balanced, and sturdy. The sidewalls of the glass are thin. Therefore, you should only hand wash these glasses to ensure they last.

Due to their premium price tag, these glasses are only suitable for formal gatherings and are not for your everyday use. But for those that want a “wow” factor, these glasses are perfect.

Remains Aware Of Where He Is Spotted And How He Acts

In addition to being selective about who he spends his time with, classy men are also cautious about where they are seen and how they are acting. Of course, letting loose and having a few drinks while out with the boys is absolutely acceptable, and certain occasions such as bachelor’s and birthday parties call for wilder nights than others.

Still, classy men are able to partake in the fun all while maintaining their consciousness and good manners so as to not blame alcohol or the environment for their bad behavior. Men of class know that anyone could be watching at any time, and you never want to get caught in a moment of ridicule due to a batch of bad judgment.

Exciting Diy Ideas To Build A Shady Space For Patio

Best OfOutdoor & Garden

In hot weather, are you planning to give up the outdoor time? The outdoor space soaked in the sun is really prohibitive. So you need a way out of the sun so that you and your family can still relax outdoors.

You can create a new structure or enhance an existing patio or pergola by adding a shade screen. In addition to turning your patio into a SHADY OASIS, they also enhance the curb appeal. If you use lattices to reach the shade, you will be shocked by them, as they cast delicately dappled light onto the outdoor living space beneath or behind. There are many examples like this… please take a look at below 10 cool ways we found how to CREATE A SHADY PATIO.

Diy Pc Polycarbonate Canopy Awning For Door Window

In this short video, this YouTuber shows you how to make a cheap but highly effective awning from polycarbonate. It looks like just the thing if you need to keep the rain away from your front door, and it also looks extremely easy to make. If those are the kinds of qualities you’re looking for, this is a plan that should be of interest.

Retractable Canopies Offer Maximum Versatility

Retractable canopies are large shading structures built over the deck and mounted to the house and decking. The best time to choose these systems is when you’re planning a new deck, so you can incorporate the support posts into the design.

  • They provide one of the most customizable patio shade ideas.
  • The shading fabric slides open and closed along overhead tracks.
  • You can retract each canopy independently of the others.

Pros: With structures up to 21 feet long and nearly 27 feet wide, the wooden canopy systems will cover almost any size deck. Each canopy is retractable, and it’s the only system that allows the canopies to be partially retracted, giving you more control over your shade. More than 40 fabric colors are available to match your home’s decor. Block sun along the sides by fastening vertical blinds to the overhead structure.

Cons: You can install the canopies on existing decks, but the support posts may not look consistent with your current decking materials and could become obstructions. The overhead structure and posts stay in place even when the canopy is retracted.

How To Build An Outdoor Awning Over Your Patio

How To Make Your Own Retractable Awning

An outdoor awning allows you to sit and enjoy your patio irrespective of heavy rainfall or strong sunlight. Patio awnings can be retractable or permanent, depending on personal choice. A retractable awning allows you to roll it up or fold it when you do not need it, while a permanent fixture installed over your patio remains in place all year round, except when you pull it off to clean, repair, or replace it. Both types of awnings extend the use of patios in all seasons.

Building an awning is easy and much cheaper than buying one. Follow these steps to build an outdoor awning or canopy over your patio.

Step 1 – Take Patio Measurements

Decide if you want the awning to be attached to the exterior of the house or a freestanding structure supported by vertical poles inserted into the ground. Then, measure the size of the patio to determine how much material you need to purchase. Take the correct length and width measurements, and note the final figures on a notepad.

For a freestanding structure, add a few inches onto these lengths for the pockets that will fit around your supports. You will also need to measure the height you want for the support system.

Step 2 – Purchase Material

Step 3 – Sew the Patio Cover

Step 4 – Build a Freestanding Awning

Measure all four sides of the material and cut four PVC pipes accordingly with a PVC pipe cutter. Then, add two-way corner PVC connectors to close the frame, with their open ends facing downwards.

Step 5 – Build an Attached Awning

How To Build A Diy Retractable Pergola Canopy

    • Skill Level: Intermediate
    • Estimated Cost: $150 to $400

A pergola is a fantastic addition to a yard or patio. But one thing that a pergola does not provide is adequate shade.

Traditionally, the solution to the lack-of-shade problem has been to intertwine trailing plants or vines, such as grapevines, jasmine, or wisteria. But plants take time to train upward, and many homeowners don’t like the shedding leaves and debris. Plus, trailing plants still don’t cover the middle sections of the pergola.

The low-cost solution for many homeowners is a retractable pergola canopy. Building a do-it-yourself retractable pergola canopy is a moderately easy, low-cost way to provide an instant cover for your structure.

A Green Option: Shade With Trees And Plants

Build Your Own Patio Cover Roof — Design And Decor Ideas ...

Large planters with trees provide shade and bring greenery onto the deck. Evergreens are a good choice. They look and smell nice, and grow tall enough to provide shade . When filled with soil, these planters tend to be heavy. Limit the size to what you can move around. Set planters along the edge of the deck to serve as a sun screen. In cold climates, trees may not survive winter in a planter—ask before you buy.

For even more shade, plant trees in the ground around the deck. Maple trees are one good choice because they have dense foliage for blocking the sun and are fast-growing, so you won’t have to wait 20 to 30 years to reap the benefits. Ask about other choices at a local nursery. In many ways, trees are the best shade system because they can shade large areas, provide privacy and beautify your yard. The downside is you have to wait several years for results.

Install The Eye Screws On The Support Bars

Stretch out the canopy and lay it on a clean surface. You may wish to install the canopy so that the support bars are either above or below the canopy fabric. Installing the bars above the fabric gives the cover a clean look that emphasizes the draping. Installing the bars below the fabric means that the bars will be visible from below. This is a stronger attachment since the support bars, not just staples, are holding up the fabric.

Attach three of the #10 eye screws on top of every support bar. Space the eye screws so that they match the spacing of the three eye screws you previously installed on the pergola. Be sure to drill pilot holes to avoid cracking the wood.

Size The Wire Ropes And Attach Turnbuckles

Extend each of the turnbuckles out as far as they will go by turning the two ends counter-clockwise to each other. Attach the three turnbuckles with the hook end to the three remaining eye screws on the pergola. Extend the free end of each wire rope to the eye end of the turnbuckles to get a general sense of where to cut the ends. Add 4 inches to your measurement and cut there, using wire cutters.
