Place The Paver Stones Individually
Prior to placing your paver stones, pick a corner or side to start in and very lightly mist the paver leveling sand. Begin laying the paver stones according to pattern you designed while being careful not to drag the stones across the leveling sand. Set adjacent paver stones to be snug against neighboring stones. I recommend gently tapping them into place using a rubber mallet.
If youre looking to build a paver patio featuring an easy design, a basket weave or herringbone pattern is classic and timeless . These designs are also time-savers, as they dont require any cutting.
I went with a modified basket weave pattern to add character. Continue following your design pattern until all stones are in place while ensuring that you lightly mist sections of leveling sand before continuing. It is also very helpful to have another person hand you stones of varying colors while you complete this step to make sure your pattern features a good aesthetic balance.
When all of your paver stones are in place, step back and be sure that you did not make any errors with your pattern. When youre ready to move on, add edging stones or other edging materials to ensure that your paver patio retains its shape. Secure them using landscaping nails.

Plan Out The Order In Which Youll Lay The Pavers
Once you have the 4 of base layer, double check that you have a little more than 1½ from the top of that to the top of the marked paver line.;
Take the two black pipes and lie them on top. Set them just in the base layer enough that they dont roll, but not so much that they are recessed. You can add a little paver dust to help lodge them into place.;
Use a level to double check the slope angle that you set up based on your string lines.;
Before putting down the concrete pavers, plan how you are going to place the paver stones. Typically you want to start from an outside edge or corner.;
Be sure not to box yourself in because you cant walk on the paver dust one youve screeded it.

Clear The Patio And Mix Cleaner
After you have removed everything from the patio, mix a solution of one part chlorine bleach to two parts water in a plastic bucket or spray bottle. You will need to protect the lawn and shrubbery from the solution with old towels or plastic sheeting. The bleach will burn and possibly kill greenery. Always wear old clothes to prevent bleach spotting and protective eyewear for safety.
Order The Base Materials And Stone
It’s what’s underneath that counts. Stone and brick are what you see, but the landscape fabric, gravel and sand are what hold them together and make your patio last.
Landscape fabric stabilizes the soil underneath the gravel base by keeping them apart while allowing water to drain through. We used 12-1/2 ft. wide, heavy, woven stabilization fabric purchased from our stone supplier. If this isn’t available, use the widest landscape fabric you can find.
Class V limestone forms the foundation of our patio, but there may be different materials available in your region. Any granular fill will work as long as the size of the granules ranges from 3/4 in. down to a powder and they’re angular, not smooth and round. These qualities allow the fill to be tightly packed for a firm base that allows water to drain through. A mixture of recycled concrete and asphalt is widely available and is a good substitute for Class V.
Depending on your soil, you’ll need a4- to 10-in. thick layer of gravel. Sandy soils require less gravel than soils with organic matter or clay. Gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard. One cubic yard covers about 50 sq. ft. at a 6-in. depth by the time it’s compacted and weighs 1-1/2 tons. We used 12 tons of gravel.
Coarse washed sand is spread over the gravel in a 1-in. layer to form a setting bed for the stone and brick, and later to fill the cracks between the bricks and stone. We used 5 tons of sand.

Add Paver Base And Compact It Tightly
If you purchased bags of paver base, move them into the now excavated area using your wheelbarrow. If you ordered a mass delivery from a landscape supplier, youll have to endure the tedious task of shoveling it into a wheelbarrow only to dump it out moments later.
Dump the base in consistent, even layers throughout the entire area and rake the base to spread it evenly. Periodically pause and use your hand tamper to ensure that the paver base is tight and compact. You will also went to lightly wet the area using the mister nozzle on your hose as you tamp it.
I saved a significant amount of money by using a hand tamper rather than renting a plate compactor, but my forearms and biceps paid dearly for this decision. If you are using a hand tamper, I recommend tamping each square foot of your base approximately 100 times to ensure that your base is firm and secure.
Need I remind you about the man who built his house on shifting sands? Making sure you have a solid paver base is well worth the extra time.
PRO TIP: When your base is secure, measure, cut, and place your landscaping fabric over the top of the base. Secure it using landscaping nails. This step is optional, but it will greatly cut down on weed intrusion in the future.

In the photo above, my metal bars are diagonal because I needed to slope my patio in two directions. I thought it would make it easier this way, but I ended up pulling them out and keeping them straight. It was easy enough to follow the slope lines with the strings.
Lay one the first spacer down, and use a squaring tool to lay down a crossing spacer. Then carefully place your first concrete paver against the two spacers.;
Repeat, using the spacers to lay more concrete pavers. Remember, you can walk on these as you lay them.

Level The Top Layer Of The Concrete Paver Patio Base
Use the square nose shovel to scoop the paver dust and spread it onto the base layer. Do this in a sifting type of motion to get it even.;
Dont tamp the sand before laying the pavers. The screeding will basically have already compacted the sand for you.
I recommend only screeding one section at a time, for two reasons. One is that if it rains before you have placed your pavers, you will need to add more sand and relevel with the screed.;
The other is that since you can walk on the pavers as you place them, it will be much easier to get around the patio. Youll be forced to work outside the patio the whole time if you level the entire space at once. Youll also benefit by getting a second set of hands for this.
To screed the sand for leveling, start at one end and place the screed on top of the pipes.;
Hold the screed tight to the pipes and push it across the pipes. Keep the pressure even as you move along.;
You may need to slide the screed back and forth to help even the sand out.
If you get to the end and you meet a wall, like the foundation of your house, use a mason float to scoop out the additional sand.;
You can also use the float if there are any spots that you accidentally pulled a piece of gravel through and it made a divot, or your hand hit.

How To Harden Sand Between Pavers
Whats the best solution when the question is: -how do you harden sand between pavers?
Regular sand, on its own, despite serving this purpose very well, doesnt harden enough. The material does fill gaps between pavers and help lock the individual blocks in place quite well, so they dont shift. But, regular sand tends to become soft when wet.
However, when sealing the pavers surface, the substance also comes into contact with the sand. When this meeting occurs, it causes the two materials to form an alloy, similar to mortar. Thus, effectively hardening the sand and helping to fix it.
If possible, use irregular, sharp-grained sand, as they have sharp edges and bind together better.

Secure The Concrete Pavers In Place And Fill The Gaps
Once you have finished each section and the pavers have all been laid, make sure none of the paver stones wobble. Youll want to check this before filling the joints.
I had about five that had some wobble and just about every time, the culprit was a raised bit of larger gravel that had been pulled near the surface. The concrete paver stone was resting awkwardly on the raised gravel.
The way to fix this is to gently remove the paver and check for the larger gravel that is raised. Remove it and fill in the hole with sand. Carefully place the paver back down into position.;
If you dont see any gravel, then something in that spot isnt level. It could be that theres a bit of a bump, or just one edge needs a little more sand. Use the float to level it and place the paver back into place.
With all the pavers set as you need them, you can start filling in the gaps. Use the square nosed shovel to scoop the sand or paver dust and place it into the joints, but only add about ½- ¾ of the paver dust/sand.;
Try to distribute it evenly between them. You can use a hand spade and/or a broom to help with this.
Now finish filling in the gaps with your decorative top layer. I used marble chips.
Spread these evenly throughout, but be sure to leave them recessed about ¼ from the top so you dont end up with a big mess of overflowing joint filler.
