Take our back patio for example. A month or two back I had spruced it up just in time for the Fourth of July. However, it has quickly gone downhill. Today Im going to share an option for a painted concrete patio makeover and we love the results we achieved!
From far away, the patio just looks a little disorganized.
However, upon closer inspection, you can see it needs help. First up is the concrete. For whatever reason, there are multiple rust stains on all six of the concrete squares. I would say upwards of 25-30. You can also see other various staining and marks . The concrete is also highly textured and seems to accumulate dirt much easier because it has a little more grit/grip and the texture is not necessarily consistent.

The porch steps were really scary. Although they are structurally sound, theyve obviously never been stained or sealed and were covered in cobwebs, dead grass clippings, dead leaves, and dust/dirt. Dont judge!
The house itself under the covered patio, as well as all of the window frames, were equally as dirty which is crazy considering they were all clean just two short months ago. Another issue with the space was functionality. Because we have the courtyard with a more intimate seating area, we tend to use the back porch solely for grilling and smoking various foods. Two functions that dont exactly lead to spotless conditions.

Acid-based stains actually penetrate and react with the salts and minerals in concrete to impart rich, deep, translucent tones. Although the color is long lasting and wont chip or peel away, it can be unpredictable and will vary depending on the makeup of the concrete.
Concrete paint is non-reactive and fills the surface pores of the concrete to achieve opaque, uniform, consistent color. However, paint can chip and peel over time, especially if you dont prepare the surface properly.
Prep & Clean Concrete
Trim grass along the perimeter of the patio with a weedeater, then use a pressure washer to blast away built-up dirt and gunk. A clean surface will ensure maximum paint adhesion and a longer-lasting result. No pressure washer? No problem. A stiff brush, a bucket of soapy water and some elbow grease will also do the trick. Let dry for 24 hours.

How To Stencil A Concrete Patio Or Path In Your Garden
You may or may not have seen my latest mammoth project that involved hand stencilling my garden path, if you havent then click here, if you have then you are probably reading this because you would like to know some more information about how I did it etc.
Well, the first thing I would say if you are interested in stencilling your patio or path is, you have to be committed and extremely patient if you want great results.
I originally thought of doing this last year but our garden was in a complete state and our path was riddled with broken concrete that was beyond repair, so I knew I would have to put it on the back burner.
Our former path was unsafe, I, and my children have tripped over it numerous times, so the guy that manages the farm we live on kindly agreed to replace it for us.
Once the new slabs were down, I started to research the best paint. This was one of the hardest things because it appears that in all the years that concrete paving slabs have been around, apparently painting them isnt a thing!
So I just had to take a chance, the closest thing I could find that would be able to take a battering from our UK weather would be masonry paint. As much as I was confident that it would withstand the rain and snow, I wasnt so sure it would handle foot fall and thats when I began to research something to seal it with.
I also bought Wickes patio and paving seal which was £18.
I will provide regular updates on how its doing on though so keep your eyes peeled.
Prepping Your Outdoor Concrete Patio
Yes, concrete is hardy and can withstand lots of wear and tear over the years. This fact doesnt mean you should slap a coat of paint on it right away.
First, youll want to make sure the concrete is as clean as possible. For newer outdoor concrete patios, you might be able to get away with a good scrub with a solution of TSP and water. Make sure to rinse the patio and let it fully dry after this step. Muriatic acid is often called upon for extremely dirty concrete surfaces.
For older patios or especially dirty surfaces , power washing is the way to go. We strongly recommend bringing in a professional for this project, as the wrong power washing setting and solution can cause more damage to your outdoor concrete patio, or even strip it of its sealant.
Next, fill in and sand any holes and cracks. You might need to remove any old spackling or mortar and refill. This step is where the real elbow grease comes in, since you will want your surface to be as smooth as possible before you apply new sealant or paint. Again, we recommend bringing in the professionals for this type of project, as your prep work can take hoursif not daysto complete on your own.

On Scoring The Concrete:
You can actually achieve the look of our porch just by painting your concrete. But we love the extra touch it brought to our outdoor space, with that extra detail. So we measured out exactly how our porch would be by establishing a border, and then measuring diagonal lines from there.
We used a chalkline to measure it all out, pop to mark the line, and cut. I had this post planned out with a detailed diagram, and then I realized that all of this will depend on the pattern you wish to use. Making me and my nerdy diagrams completely irrelevant. } Ours was a bit of a challenge because our porch is not a perfect square. So when we measured everything for our own porch, we made sure that all the large diamonds were even, and that the lines would be two feet apart.
We used a circular saw or skill saw, with a diamond tipped concrete blade. We set our depth at about 1/8 of an inch. This process for our porch only took one blade, and it was a project that lasted the best part of an afternoon. That was it. A little personality for your concrete porch.
It sat for a few years before we were able to paint it.
How To Paint A Concrete Porch
Step 1. Pressure wash the porch & let it dry. We had a small pressure washer that worked great for cleaning off our covered porch. But unfortunately my husband broke it while spraying off the porch furniture, so Im eyeing this pressure washer for our next purchase.
Step 2. Tape off anything you dont want painted with painters tape. I dont do this step because Im pretty good at using free hand with my Purdy brush. But if youre not sure if you can keep paint off your brick or other parts of your home, use the tape!
Step 3. Apply 1 coat of Valspars Concrete Binding Primer. Allow it to dry 1-4 hours before applying your paint. This stuff went on like a glue, which was a transparent white color. But then dried clear. It was dried to the touch after about 2 hours. You will want to follow the instructions on the can, which say to apply the paint within 4 hours of applying the binding primer.
Step 4. Apply 2 coats of Valspars Porch, Floor and Patio latex paint. Youll want to make the decision whether or not to do 2 coats. Mine was mostly fine after the first coat, but I like a 2nd coat just for good measure. Let the first coat dry overnight before painting the 2nd coat.
Step 5. Wait 72 hours before you move your furniture back onto the porch.
Thats it! Yay!!!
It was such a simple and easy process. Im not sure why it took me so long to get it done! If youre on the fence to change your patio with a little bit of paint just go for it!

What Are The Advantages Of Using Paint To Color Concrete
You cant beat concrete paint if youre looking for a product that is:

Unlike acid stains, which must be applied with a sprayer, you can apply most concrete paints with a simple paint brush or roller. When working with acid-based stains, its important to take precautionary measures because they often contain corrosive components that can cause eye and skin irritation and produce strong odors.
Like latex-based house paint, most concrete paints are tintable, giving you an endless array of color options. And because concrete paints are opaque and can be applied in multiple coats, they are great at hiding hairline cracks and other minor flaws in existing concrete, as opposed to a translucent stain which would allow those imperfections to show through.
Roll On Accent Color Mud Gray With Faux Roller
So next I used Mud Gray, the 2nd accent color using the same method with the faux roller. It has a muddy brown tone and really smushes all the colors together giving it more of a real stone look. The roller has those little tails on it that move the paint around and gives it that stone look.
I loved it already just from this look and knew that once the tape came up it would look great. The 2nd color really gives it more depth and a little more brown tone which I love because it goes well with our siding color.
