What Are The Advantages Of Using Paint To Color Concrete

How to paint concrete patio with Behr Granite Grip floor covering

You cant beat concrete paint if youre looking for a product that is:

  • Easy to apply
  • Offers a broad selection of colors
  • Provides good coverage

Unlike acid stains, which must be applied with a sprayer, you can apply most concrete paints with a simple paint brush or roller. Cleanup is easy as well, since most concrete paints are water-based acrylic latex formulas. Concrete paints are also safer to apply, especially indoors. When working with acid-based stains, its important to take precautionary measures because they often contain corrosive components that can cause eye and skin irritation and produce strong odors.

Like latex-based house paint, most concrete paints are tintable, giving you an endless array of color options. And because concrete paints are opaque and can be applied in multiple coats, they are great at hiding hairline cracks and other minor flaws in existing concrete, as opposed to a translucent stain which would allow those imperfections to show through.

How to Paint and Stencil a Concrete Porch or Patio Floor using a Cutting Edge Design Stencil.

  • Prep Concrete Floor

Power wash the floor or scrub well with hot water and detergent or TSP. Rinse well and let dry.

  • Add a Coat of Concrete Primer

This is an important step, so dont skip it. Roll on one coat of concrete primer. It goes on white, but will dry clear. Let dry for one hour. After one to four hours you will need to add the first coat of paint.

  • Roll On Base Coat of Paint

When stenciling a floor you need two colors of paint. Use a 1/2 nap paint roller to apply one light coat of base paint color. Let dry. Apply second coat of base color paint and let dry at least 4 hours or overnight.

  • Figure Out Where To Start Stenciling

When using a stencil you need to figure out where the best place is to start. Make sure to read the directions that come with the stencil. You want to consider what part of the floor you see first as this is where you want to make sure a full tile shows up. Then against a far wall would be where the stencil ends and it may not be a full tile.

  • Let Dry

Check the dry time on the paint label on how long you need to let it dry before walking over it or placing furniture back on.

  • How Long Did It Take To Paint And Stencil The Floor

It took a few hours over a two day period to paint and stencil the floor.

Since we used porch and floor paint we did not need to seal it.

The overall pattern is subtle with just enough color and pattern to make the porch look more inviting.

Other Concrete Coating Options To Consider

As mentioned earlier, epoxy coatings can yield a stronger, longer-lasting finish than paint for certain applications. Epoxy coatings can also give you a more polished, glossy look, so its often recommended to use mix-in anti-slip compounds to offset the slicker finish.

Note: While a one-part paint with an epoxy additive can achieve some of these benefits, a true epoxy product will always have a two-part formula with the epoxy and a hardener additive.

Polyurea generally costs a little more than epoxy, and professional application is recommended, but its more flexible and abrasion-resistant than epoxy. Similarly, a polyurea coating can be very smooth, so anti-slip compound is recommended.

    Can You Paint Concrete Patios

The first step is to establish whether concrete patios can be painted. The answer is yes, they can be painted, however they cannot be painted using any generic paint. Contrary to popular belief, a standard masonry paint is not suitable to be applied to a concrete patio. This is down to a number of reasons:

    • Masonry paint is designed for vertical concrete & brick walls
    • Masonry paint cannot withstand standing water, which a concrete patio has to endure
    • Masonry paint is not designed to take the wear and tear from foot fall that a floor must endure, which is why floor paints are specifically designed

While a masonry paint will adhere to concrete once a primer has been applied, the durability of masonry paint once applied to a floor will be poor, lasting a fraction of the lifespan of the product if applied to an exterior wall, as it was designed to do. The reality is, even under conditions they were designed under, standard masonry paints are susceptible to moisture soaking through the paint film and causing the paint to peel & flake off the concrete. This is why waterproof masonry paints were developed in order to prevent this water ingress, although these are not suitable for horizontal surfaces also as they have not been designed to repel water that sits on the surface of the concrete.

    Prepare The Concrete Surface

Start by tidying your outdoor space area, clear it of furniture, flowerpots, and toys then sweep and clean thoroughly to remove any dirt and dust. Cover any plants or landscaping that cant be removed with tarps or cloth to protect them from chemicals and water run-off. Next, scrub the patio surface to remove grease or any type of grime from the concrete. Grease or oil on the surface will bleed through the new paint, interfering with the longevity of the paint and cause it to discolour.

Remove moss, roots, vines and anything else that has grown on the surface of the concrete before cleaning. Its probably worthwhile to rent a pressure-washer to remove the stubborn grime and stains. Alternatively you can mix water and some mild detergent and scrub over the concrete using a broom or scrub brush.

If you have previously painted your patio any old paint can be removed with paint-removing solvent and scrapers. This may take you a while, but it is essential for a beautiful painted finish. If you dont do this, you can end up with bumps and an uneven texture on the surface. Allow for the patio to fully dry before proceeding to the next step.

Even if the patio doesn’t appear to be dirty, clean it anyway. Specs of dirt may not be visible but they can ruin the finish of a new paint job. So basically, the better the patio surface, the better quality of your paintwork.

You have to apply two coats, the second after 4-6 hours of the first coat application. When you are done however, you will enjoy crack and peel resistance. However, it may not be suitable for places that have high traffic. Before you apply, make sure you that the surface is free from any dirt.

    • Kathy Bitzan on May 09, 2017I would first get a power washer and get it cleaned off with maybe some sanding in spots. The stores have paint for concrete, pick a color and redo it. Maybe you painted while it was to damp and had not fully dried. Or maybe a oily spot. You could always stencil over it also.
    • Joy on May 10, 2017Concrete is porous and it expands with the element of the seasons. There may be paints but many do not guarantee against this happening. Painted concrete looks nice but you may want to color dye it instead.
    • Connie Stahlman on May 10, 2017Since it is already painted would I be able to color dye it? I know nothing about color dying
  • Joy on May 10, 2017Look on the internet I am not a person to consult but there are applications out there. You may want to go professional so that you get their experience behind the product.
  • Jacquelin Stutz Mullin on May 10, 2017I’m not sure what to tell you about the peeling paint other than it should be removed before repainting. If you decide to repaint consider a “softer” paint. Look for a 2 part, polymer-acrylic with an epoxy base. Reputable Tub refinishers use this type of paint on fiberglass tubs. *Yes, it would have to be sprayed on. However, It allows for the expansion and contraction of the tub. I would assume it would do the same with concrete.
  • How To Paint A Concrete Patio Fill The Cracks

We had to do a ton of vacuuming to get up the dust that was everywhere! But we wanted to keep the patio clean throughout the process which ended up talking about a month+ between other projects Because the weather couldnt make up its mind. It literally snowed 4 times and to follow the manufacturers instructions, you need it to be dry AND a minimum temperature!

Anywho, we just kept plugging along. Next was filling the cracks, with DRYLOK® Concrete Patch. It took a bit to get it right, we actually ended up having to do two coats to fill in all the settling.

We ground down the crack filler afterward, but in hindsight we should have been a lot more careful applying it the first time, because grinding it smooth, did cause it to flake and break in some places. Ultimately, we just embraced it, and you will be shocked what the paint hides!

How To Apply Liquid Rubber Pu Deck Coating To A Concrete Patio

Apply Liquid Rubber Polyurethane Deck Coating when the temperature is between 50-86F and the humidity is below 80%. If rain is in the forecast within two days, wait till you know you will have several clear days before you begin painting.

You can brush on roll on Liquid Rubber PU Deck Coating. Use a roller for large areas and a small polyester brush for trim work and to reach tight spots. Standard polyester rollers work well on smooth finishes, but a deeper napped roller is preferable for textured finishes. Take note that textured and smooth finish paint can be mixed to achieve your desired finish.

Apply the coating in generous coats and allow it to cure until dry to the touch. Normally this will take 4-8 hours but can vary due to environmental conditions. Warm dry weather with a breeze will provide optimum conditions.

Once a coat has dried, apply another coat until you have used up all of the polyurethane you have. You cannot have too many coats. However, add three to four coats for optimal results. When your last coat feels dry, caulk around poles or other areas where water can infiltrate.

An important detail to remember is even though the coating will be dry to the touch in just a few hours you should avoid walking on it as much as possible for 48-72 hours depending on the weather and no furniture should be placed on it for 5-7 days. It takes that long for the polyurethane to fully cure and reach its full strength.
