How To Prime Metal Furniture

How to Paint Metal Patio Chairs (Step-by-Step!!)

Using the right product for your situation is essential. I use a few different primers, depending on the condition of the piece:

  • Galvanized Steel or Tricky surfacesUniversal Bonding Primer
  • For rusty surfaces that cant be sandedRust Reformer. I havent actually used this one without sanding, however it gets rave reviews. Personally, I would be too nervous not to sand.)
  • For surfaces exposed to high heat or in full sunHigh Heat Primer Spray. Ive used it for a grill we repainted, for example.

You may notice that all of these are Rustoleum because I have consistent success with many of their product lines. Many of these primers come in several colors.

If none of the above situations apply, you actually dont need to use a full primer. Often times, I only prime the areas that need a touch up if the old paint is in good condition.

But I see a lot of potential in it. It would be perfect in a corner of my patio to hold a small planter, or sit next to my chair for my morning tea or a good book. Or hold a Sangria pitcher and glasses for two.

While it was in overall decent shape when I picked it up from my neighbor, I wasnt keen on the color. I wasnt necessarily repulsed by the color. It just didnt do anything for me. So I decided to refurbish this faded metal outdoor furniture piece and Im so glad I did!

Your old metal garden furniture is teeming with restoration potential, it just takes a little work. Looking for advice on how to restore your aluminum and wrought iron garden furniture, so you won’t have to ever bid it adieu? We asked Henry to take us through the step-by-step process, and here’s what she had to say.

Does Teak Furniture Need To Be Treated With Teak Oil

Most teak furniture manufacturers recommend not using teak oil. The woods natural oil is sufficient to protect it from damage. Teak oil is not actually the same as the natural oil found in the teak tree. It is just called teak oil for marketing purposes, when really it is mostly composed of linseed oil and solvents.

When freshly applied, teak oil will give the wood a nice attractive glow, but this will be short-lived. Before long, the teak oil on the surface will dry out and your furniture will quickly fade in color again.

You will have to keep reapplying oil every few months to keep ahead of the graying process. If you are unlucky, the teak oil stuck to the surface will encourage fungus growth and leave tiny black spots on the wood. This is exactly what you dont want to happen.

Treating teak with oil depletes the woods natural oils, and the wood becomes dependent on a periodic external oil treatment. However the extra moisture of the oil also creates the ideal environment for mildew to flourish. Therefore, this method is not recommended.

Apply The Right Kind Of Paint

How to Paint Rusty Metal Patio Furniture

When it comes time to paint your metal furniture, Henry recommends choosing an exterior-grade latex or oil-based paint for brushing, or an exterior grade spray paint specific to metal, such as Krylon Fusion All-In-One Spray Paint and Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Metallic Spray Paint . “My advice is to stay clear of high gloss paints unless you are prepared to do sanding in between each coat,” she says. “Don’t forget to follow recommended re-coat times on each product, as times vary widely between products.”

Add A Protective Coat

If you aren’t applying a protective enamel finish to your painted metal furniture, Henry says you’re doing it wrong. “A final clear coat of oil-based urethane will provide added durability and help prevent future damage to the furniture,” she says. She recommends sticking with an oil-based enamel, versus a water-based one, since they last longer and often create a brighter finish.

Don’t Skip The Priming Step

Once you’ve prepped your metal outdoor furniture, Henry says to prime the piece with a high-quality rust preventive spray primer, such as Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Spray Paint Primer . “Choose a white primer for lighter colors and a dark primer for darker ones,” she says. “Spray slowly at an 8-to-12-inch distance, in a consistent spray pattern, lengthwise along each section, to avoid drips and overspray. Remember to treat the back and underside since outdoor furniture can collect moisture and condensation in the crannies.” After applying two to three light coats of primer, allowing the primer to dry between each coat, she suggests lightly sanding the piece with very fine sandpaper and wiping it off with a non-wax tack cloth to remove the dust.
