Maintain Hardwood Garden Furniture

How to Update Your Concrete Patio or Wood Deck with Paint

Hardwoods do not need the preservation process that most softer woods need. However, this wood typically costs much more than the softwood used in most commercial wooden garden furniture. Here is a list of typical hardwoods used outdoors and how to keep them looking good.

  • Shorea â like other fine woods, it weathers to a silvery gray colour. This tropical hardwood has a naturally high oil content. This makes it water resistant and unlikely to rot. It tends to be insect-resistant as well. Similar in make-up to teak, shorea handles all types of weather conditions. To clean or maintain shorea, spray it lightly with water or use a mild detergent with water and rinse well.
  • Teak â this beautiful hardwood resists water, rot and insects. Teak oil keeps this wooden furniture safe from food and drink stains. Teak wood furniture kept in arid and dry climates needs regular applications of teak oil. Clean teak as you would shorea.
  • Ipe â this South American hardwood goes by other names including Pao Lope, ironwood and Brazilian walnut. Ipe comes from the forests of Brazil and might be three times harder than teak. It weathers the same as shorea and teak. Clean it with mild detergent and water and allow it to dry. Do this every three months before you apply teak or hardwood oil.

Many products labeled as deck paint are designed to restore old decks. They penetrate and fill small cracks and cover up stains and other minor flaws. For proper adhesion, good preparation is a must, which includes completely removing any old finish. Steps include:

Painting An Outdoor Deck02:01

Fixing any popped nail and screw heads.

Filling any cracks larger than 1/4″ wide with epoxy putty; stain to match the surrounding deck boards.

Using a stain and sealer remover on any wood thats previously been finished with paint, stain, or a clear sealer.

Applying a deck wash product to completely clean all wood surfaces. Allow to dry thoroughly, at least 48 hours.

Sanding any ridges or lifted grain with 80-grit sandpaper; cleaning up any dust.

Protecting adjacent surfaces, such as siding, with painters tape and plastic sheeting.

Covering nearby plants with plastic to prevent damage.

Lightly Sand The Furniture

While you can absolutely spray paint wooden outdoor furniture without sanding, I dont recommend it. When youre upcycling something old thats been exposed to the elements for a minute, you want to help get things down to a nice clean surface.

If your furniture has previously been painted, this becomes even more important. I personally recommend using a sander, like this cordless one by RyobiONE+. We own multiple Ryobi ONE+ tools, and I love that the battery fits all of them, which makes it super easy. All my furniture really needed was a light sanding to get it prepped and ready to go.

If you dont have an electric sander, you can use a sanding sponge too. Go over every surface of the furniture you can and give it a light sand. Depending on any remaining original finish, you might need a heavier sanding in a few places. Be sure you wear a mask and eye protection to keep the dust out of your lungs and eyes. Since my furniture only needed a light sanding, sunglasses worked fine for me!

After sanding, be sure to blow off any dust that remains. I actually use a leaf blower for this, since its right there in the garage where I paint and does the job super well!

How Do You Remove Old Paint From A Deck Surface

So, you’ve determined your current deck paint is failing. Seeing cracking, peeling, or blistering? If only in small areas, I would suggest scraping, lifting up failed deck paint, by hand. Using a hand scraper, putty knife, or sharp flat blade, scraping it away from your substrate.

Smaller areas you might want to do this by hand, larger areas best serving you with powered equipment.

Now, if you’re looking at a larger area, too much to scrape by hand, you’ll need some power tools helping you along. Today’s technology, latest tools offers some time-saving benefits.

This year, remembering a shed we also painted, painting the exterior of a home here in Denver. This shed was in poor shape, paint peeling off of siding everywhere. Thankfully, shed was only 8′ X 8′, having lap cedar siding.

What I used on shed, also works on decks as well, like a dream! This newest tool called a Wagner’s PAINTEATER®. This tool took paint off like there was no tomorrow. Putting plastic sheathing down, encapsulating all the paint chips, leaving wood in pristine condition afterwards.

There’s always exceptions, finding last year! A client called us to refinish their deck, pergola & lattice. Bringing out deck sander, sandpaper & pads did not remove as easy as we thought, deck having multiple coats of old paint. I estimate there were at least 6 old coats of paint, nearly 45 years old, hard as a rock!

Does Teak Furniture Need To Be Treated With Teak Oil

painting lattice patio covers the way I do it

Most teak furniture manufacturers recommend not using teak oil. The woods natural oil is sufficient to protect it from damage. Teak oil is not actually the same as the natural oil found in the teak tree. It is just called teak oil for marketing purposes, when really it is mostly composed of linseed oil and solvents.

When freshly applied, teak oil will give the wood a nice attractive glow, but this will be short-lived. Before long, the teak oil on the surface will dry out and your furniture will quickly fade in color again.

You will have to keep reapplying oil every few months to keep ahead of the graying process. If you are unlucky, the teak oil stuck to the surface will encourage fungus growth and leave tiny black spots on the wood. This is exactly what you dont want to happen.

Treating teak with oil depletes the woods natural oils, and the wood becomes dependent on a periodic external oil treatment. However the extra moisture of the oil also creates the ideal environment for mildew to flourish. Therefore, this method is not recommended.

Should You Leave Your Patio Furniture Outside

Most patio furniture can be left outside after all, it was made to be there! But the harsh winter weather conditions can take a toll on the finishes, leaving them looking less-than-new when nice weather comes back around.;

Its best to put metal, wood, wicker, and fabric pieces in storage to keep them out of the elements. Most plastic furniture can stay outside, but be careful to watch the temperatures if there is another Polar Vortex this year, youll want to bring those pieces inside to prevent them from cracking in the cold.

You can disassemble many of your pieces and store them in your garage or basement. But if youre short on that extra storage space, there are also steps you can take to winterize your patio furniture to keep it safe all winter long.;

Just be sure to act during the fall and take these simple steps before the weather in Chicago gets too cold and snowy to work outside! And remember that different types of furniture need different approaches.;

White And Orange Dining Area With Painted Rug

Painting Your Wooden Decks

No need to use a fabric rug in this outdoor space, given the orange and white-bordered rug painted on the wood deck. The cheery bright color scheme continues with the outdoor dining table and orange and white stools.

Painting your deck is a great way to bring vibrant color to your outdoor living area. Typically, homeowners paint railings, stairs, and posts but stain the decking. Thats because stain tends to hold up better to foot traffic than paint.

Nevertheless, painting decking boards is definitely possible. Although painting completely obscures the grain, youll be able to give your decking surface unmatched personality and pizzazz. Deck painting ideas include patterns, such as checkerboards and stripes, or even faux rugs.

If youre planning a new deck and thinking of painting your decking boards, youll want to apply a good quality primer to all sides of the boards before installation. Its a bit of a hassle to primer all sides of decking boards individually, but thatll go a long way toward fending off moisture from underneath your deck and helps keep decking boards stable. Otherwise, changes in soil moisture and humidity could cause expansion and contraction of decking boards, stressing out your paint job and causing the paint to peel and chip.

Another option is solid color stains. Theyre close to paints in terms of performance, and theyre made to withstand foot traffic. Theyre not as tough as paint and colors are somewhat limited.
