Good question!

I have never had much luck using standard paint for painting outdoor furniture. It always seem to chip and needs to be re-painted often.

Which is why I chose to go with spray paint for this project.

It also gets the job done a lot faster, dries quicker and it doesnt seem to wear off as easily. Even if it does start to fade, its really easy to do touch ups by getting out another can of spray paint.

My go-to spray paint for this kind of project is *. It has a primer built in which makes the job go even faster. As long as your furniture isnt too rusty, you dont need anything else.

I also chose to go with a flat paint . Thats because its easier to get the finish to look right. And if you do need to do some touch-ups in the future, they blend right in.

Step 1: Clean The Furniture

Your hard work wont last long if you try to paint over existing rust. Use the wire brush to scrape and brush away as much rust as you can reach. Dont forget the underside of the table and the back sides of the chair legs.

Once youve removed the rust, rinse each piece of furniture using the high-pressure setting on your hose nozzle. This will help remove any last little bits of rust. Use shop towels or old bath towels to thoroughly dry each piece of furniturethis is important because any moisture left on the bare metal will quickly convert back to rust.

Don’t Skip The Priming Step

Once you’ve prepped your metal outdoor furniture, Henry says to prime the piece with a high-quality rust preventive spray primer, such as Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Spray Paint Primer . “Choose a white primer for lighter colors and a dark primer for darker ones,” she says. “Spray slowly at an 8-to-12-inch distance, in a consistent spray pattern, lengthwise along each section, to avoid drips and overspray. Remember to treat the back and underside since outdoor furniture can collect moisture and condensation in the crannies.” After applying two to three light coats of primer, allowing the primer to dry between each coat, she suggests lightly sanding the piece with very fine sandpaper and wiping it off with a non-wax tack cloth to remove the dust.

Decoart Wrought Iron Black Patio Paint

How to Refinish Wrought Iron Patio Furniture

Now, lets talk about the DecoArt Patio Paint. Even though weve mentioned the black color here. But turns out DecoArt has a collection of 20 different colors for painting patio furniture.

You never know which color youre going to like the most. Moreover, a lot of people like to have different color themes in different rooms or areas. For those people, this product should be at the top.

Other than that, the formulation comes with weather and rust protection. So, you dont need to spend any extra money on varnish or sealants.

Most importantly, you can use it on outdoor furniture. Thats where most paints perform poorly. With a little moisture and heat, you start to notice wear and tear.

But thats not the case with this paint. Not only this is the best paint for wrought iron outdoor furniture but you also get the best colors to paint wrought iron patio furniture.

Paint The Chair With A Paint Roller

  • Lay down a drop cloth to prevent paint from getting on the ground. This will save you some cleanup time.
  • Paint the chair using a 3-inch paint roller with a thick nap. I found that this gave me maximum control, especially in the bends and crevices.
  • Apply two coats of paint.

I used oil-based, rust preventative paint, specifically the . I recommend using canned paint over spray paint because for these wrought iron chairs, most of the spray will just go through it rather than on it.

I used a one-inch brush to get the parts that the roller could not cover, but be careful with this technique. You want to avoid over-saturating your brush because it can lead to paint runs.

Oil-based paint takes a while to dry . I easily painted all four chairs in one dayalthough it did take me all day.

Use spray paint to touch up .

Best Ways To Paint Wrought Iron

True Value

Wrought iron railings, fences and patio furniture have been a classically elegant staple of homes for decades. Over time, exposed to the elements, wrought iron can become pitted and rusty and in need of refinishing.

Even if your wrought iron pieces look good, you can paint them a different color to add a personal touch and contemporary style to what is usually a traditional element of your home.

Brush And Sand Off The Rust

Next, you need to remove the rust entirely. Start with your wire brush and go over the areas that have rust thoroughly. This will not remove all the rust, but it will make it easier to sand off.

Take your coarse sandpaper and remove all of the paint and rust from the area. As an optional tool to speed up the process, you can use a sander. There are also rust removers on the market that will do the job. Make sure to follow all of the instructions and thoroughly remove it before moving on to the next step.

My Wrought Iron Patio Furniture Needed Restoration

My four wrought iron chairs used to be ivory white when I got them for Mother’s Day sometime in the last century. If they were sold on Etsy, they would definitely be classified as “vintage.”

About ten years ago, I gave my oldest daughter the chairs when she and her husband moved into their first home. Of course, she did not like the ivory colorwhite really shows environmental dirt and mildewso she spray-painted them black. Not knowing any better, she did not sand the original paint before applying the new paint. You can guess what happened afterthe black paint flaked off! After years of repainting, she gave up and returned them to me. Luckily, there was only a little bit of rust that could be sanded off easily.

Here is the correct way to refurbish wrought iron chairs the right way.

Step 2: Prime And Paint

Dont skip the primer coat on wood outdoor furniture. Applying this protective barrier from sunlight and moisture is one of the most important steps you can take to keep your furniture from deteriorating through the year.

Whether you use a paint brush, a foam brush, a roller, or a spray can to apply primer and paint is up to you .

Bare wood soaks up paint and primer, so buy a little more of each than you think youll need. Be sure to allow each coat to dry before applying the next.

Keep your furniture in a garage or other covered area until the paint has fully dried and cured.

How Do You Prep Wrought Iron For Painting

Painted Wrought Iron Patio Furniture

Spray wrought iron with a primer made specifically for metals, such as True Value X-O. Rust rust-inhibiting primer. Aerosol primer and paint often provide the best, smoothest coverage results on metal, however; it may be necessary in some areas to apply metal primer with a brush. For best results, apply two coats.

Can You Spray Paint Wrought Iron Furniture

Spray paint is another option of course, but I would have needed about 10 cans of paint and I would have had claw hand for days. My sprayer allows me to paint furniture with ease without the dreaded claw hand!

Plus, it allows you to use your favorite color of paint. I used Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black because I was playing it safe to sell this set. But a bright turquoise would have also been fun.

Eventually I might repaint it a fun color and replace the glass top with wood planks.

Getting Ready To Paint Your Wrought Iron

Now that you have obtained the materials needed for the repainting job, it is now time to start.

As a rule, you should not paint under any element that suits you. For instance, it is not advisable to paint the piece under direct sunlight. In the same regard, avoid painting when the temperature is less than 50 degrees or the humidity is above 80 percent.

Instead, the job should be done on a dry day when the temperature and humidity are moderate. Also, ensure that the surface of the metal is dry before starting.

High Quality Wrought Iron Patio Furniture Utilizes An Epoxy Or Zinc Primer To Inhibit Rust

HOW IS WROUGHT IRON PATIO FURNITURE MADE?

Wrought means produced or shaped by beating with a hammer which sounds like a great way to get my husband to shape up. Im joking of course, hammers have no place in relationships, but they do have a place in the manufacturing of wrought iron furniture . View the full line of Wrought Iron Patio Furniture from Family Leisure here.

Wrought iron furniture is actually steel, which is a combination of two elements, iron and carbon. Higher quality wrought iron furniture will be manufactured from steel with higher carbon content.  The steel is processed in two ways, either in rods or in sheets. The rods are bent and hammered to make the frames of tables and chairs. Sheets are rolled out and, traditionally, thousands of holes are punched into the metal. The sheet is stretched to make mesh and is cut into various shapes for table tops and seats and backs of chairs.

Wrought iron is a great material for outdoor furniture, despite potential rust issues. High quality wrought iron furniture utilizes an epoxy or zinc primer to inhibit rust, and if there is some corrosion, it is easily sanded away and spray painted. Wrought Iron Patio Furniture and Twinkies will be the only survivors of a nuclear holocaust.

FUN FACT China is the largest producer of steel in the world.

Wrought iron patio furniture is a great, functional way to add a retro or art deco look to your patio. It will also never break, barring some natural disaster, and it holds up to the weather better than wood or plastic, with the proper finish. Like anything made of iron, your patio furniture might rust from time to time, and if left unchecked, this rust could damage the furniture. However, it’s fairly easy to perform maintenance on wrought iron patio furniture.

  • Remove any loose flakes of paint with a paint scraper and a wire brush. Keep scraping and brushing until any piece of paint that is even somewhat loose has been removed.

  • Apply a commercial rust remover to the rusty areas on your furniture, and allow the coating to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions on the bottle.

  • Sand the rust remover off of the furniture.

  • Using the brush, apply a coat of the rust-resistant primer to all of the exposed areas that you have just scraped and sanded. You do not need to apply primer to the areas where you will leave the old paint. If the old paint is still firmly attached, it makes just as good a bottom coat as the primer.

  • Brush on a second coat of primer once the first has dried.
