How To Put A Roof On A Flat Pergola

Cover Attached To Top Of Pergola

Adding Clear Patio Cover Sheet To Pergola | Cover Your Pergola

The methods mentioned above for attaching shade cloth to the top of your Pergola would still be valid for canvas materials, making it suitable for heavier rain, as long as there is enough slope to ensure they drain. I found three different methods for attaching the cloth that if the whole roof structure of the pergola has a slope would still work. Check out How to Attach Cloth to Cover a Pergola. The main issue I can imagine is if using the batten technique you might trap water in the lower corners that may encourage the material to rot. Ensuring the water can all escape by maybe angling the battens and leaving a suitable gap at the corners should be sufficient.

Screw On The Roofing Panels

Then youre ready to start attaching your panels.

Put up the first panel so that its lying straight across the horizontal supports and the last raised groove is running on top of the vertical strip .

Make sure that you have the proper side up. There should be a label on the panel that tells you what side that is. Remove the label before attaching the panel.

Since my panel was a little bigger than my pergola roof, I let it overhang on both sides. That way if my roof isnt perfectly square , I can trim the panels later to end at the edge of the pergola roof line.

Then use a quarter inch drill bit to drill holes through the panel where the screws are going to go. These screws will be installed in the raised part of the horizontal supports and along the vertical supports.

You dont need a screw in every raised section of the horizontal closure strip.

For the strips that run along the outside edges of your pergola roof, put a screw in every other raised section.

For the closure strips that are in the middle of your pergola roof, put a screw in every third raised section.

Then screw in the screws with rubberized washers using the socket bit.

The washer should be resting firmly on the plastic roofing panel, but not tight enough to cause a dimple in the panel.

When you get to the edge where the next panel will join, dont put the screws in yet.

Put up the next panel so that the first raised section of the new panel overlaps the last raised section of the old panel.

Pergola Roof Ideas: What You Need To Know

Its a bit of an oxymoron isnt it? A pergola roof. By definition, a pergola does not have a roof but the practical evolution of the many thousand years old idea is finally progressing at a rate worthy of the twenty-first century.

Static Panels or Fabrics

One option I became aware of recently is a clear plastic cover that rests on top of the rafters. This provides protection from the rain but nothing else. It also shows the dirt and debris that collects up there and does nothing for the aesthetics that the relaxing and stylish retreat a pergola should have. This is an inexpensive option that can run as low as about two dollars a square foot.

Another fixed pergola roof option is fabric in tension stretched over the rafters. This protects from both sun and rain if you use a water resistant fabric but it comes with inherent problems that are significant enough to limit its application onto pergolas. Fabric will pocket with water and over time the pockets stretch and progressively get worse. The pockets collect dirt and debris which contribute to mildewing. Fabric can be as little as four or five dollars a square foot assuming a reasonable quality outdoor fabric is used. A big box store is selling this solution on an arched roof pergola kit .

Preparing The Acrylic Sheets

Flat Roof Patio & Pergola Designs

Pre-drilling in wood might be important but optional. When it comes to acrylic its a must.

Stack all the sheets on a flat surface making sure all the sides are flush. Now, draw a line alongside, 2 cm away from the edge. Starting from 2 cm away from the end mark points right between the line and the edge. Make a note of the spacing between the points in order to avoid drilling into a screw when putting down the finishing battens. In this case, it was around 20cm.

Now using a metal drill bit, drill and countersink screw holes for mounting screws. Acrylic will crack if you don’t!

Pergola On Flat Roof: Can It Be Done Safely

I want to put a pergola on my flat roof but am not sure if it’s possible to construct one safely. My roof is a wide open flat surface built to be enjoyed as a rooftop deck with tufflex deck layer. I want to attach the posts directly to the roof but I don’t think that is possible due to compromising the integrity of the roofing layer . On the other hand I’m not sure how to calculate if concrete blocks are enough to prevent it from flying away which would be catastrophic as it would fall 3 stories. Unfortunately there is no structure I can attach it to other than the ~4ft walls around the roof that are capped with a metal sheet.

Has anyone done this or do you have ideas on if it can be done safely? I was originally planning to just attach the pergola to concrete blocks but I’m worried about gusts of wind and have no insight on if this is safe or what amount of weight is needed to secure it. For the pergola frame I plan to use bamboo due to its light weight and strength: my idea is that the center of mass would be much lower using bamboo vs a traditional hardwood or even an aluminum frame. It would also put less load on the roof itself, but I sacrifice potential stability as cedar pergolas are 5x the weight I believe.

The roof looks like this:

In summary, is it possible to construct a pergola on a flat roof safely given my constraints ?

Edit: The roofing material is actually tufflex

What Angle Should Apergola Roof Be

There are so many different styles of pergolas, it is not hardto figure out what angle should a pergola roof be. For me personally, I like tohave the pergola at least 25 degrees off of the ground.

Most people find that this gives them more support and does not have the vertical or perpendicular inclination.

This is an important factor when making a decision on what angle to build a pergola at. After all, a pergola is a patio, and while not a âshadeâ it is much smaller than most of your outdoor area.

You can find many sites on the internet that will help you with this particular design. The key is to make sure that the garden is the same shape as the wall.

This means that you should plan on building the pergola out from the garden in order to reduce any build up of soil.

The most interesting part about this particular design is thatyou will have a couple options for ceiling heights. The first thing that youwill want to think about is how much soil you will need to cover the wall. Onceyou know the area, you can figure out what height ceiling you will need tobuild.

This is the most important part when making the decision on whatangle to use.

You will want to try to set the ceiling at least 3 feet off ofthe floor level. This will give you adequate height but not too much. Rememberthat you will want to have plenty of extra room on the ground for a pergolacover.

There are also plenty of options for materials that will add a little extra design element to the structure.

Can I Put A Flat Roof On A Pergola

Yes. It is possible to put a flat roof on a pergola. In fact, most pergola roofs are generally flat, even if they have openings. Traditionally, pergolas have a lattice-type roof. This sort of roof enables the pergola to have a lot of ventilation and space for vines to grow up the structure.

The downside of the traditional pergola structure is that it does not provide proper shading or protection from rain if the vines are not completely covering the lattice materials. This can make it difficult to sit underneath the pergola in peace.

Because of this difficulty with the traditional pergola structure, many people add a flat covering that resembles more of a traditional ceiling or roof. This complete coverage is not traditionally found in pergolas but is found in pavilions instead.

Even though this is not the traditional design for pergolas, you can certainly add it to your pergola. You may need to custom make the pergola or DIY it. Either way, you certainly can add a completely flat and closed covering to your pergola.

Securing Foundation Posts To The Wall

How to Put a Roof On A Flat Pergola

For extra stability, you should attach the remaining two foundation posts to the wall.

Firstly place the remaining two 211cm posts, upright 3 meters apart from each other . Next, using a knife or a nail mark the position of the post on the wall. Predrill at least 3 holes in the wall, right between the lines and insert wall plugs. Take one of the construction screws and using the angle grinder cut the head off, in the way that you end up with a sharp end. Insert the screw in the wall, leaving around 5mm sticking out. Place the foundation post in the position, make sure its leveled and press it against the wall. You should end up with a clear mark left by the screw. Now, turn the post around and predrill holes in the marked places. Attach the post to the wall and to the base using the construction screws.

  • Trim the top of the 5 posts at the desired height. Refer to the cross-section plan.
  • Work out the height of the top of the posts in relation to the required rafter fall.
  • The fall should be at least 10 degrees if possible. In this example, trim the top of the posts off 316mm below the highest point of the underside of the rafter. .

What Is A Pergola With A Roof Called

In most cases, a pergola with the roof will still be called a pergola. If the roof is made from lattice or other crossbeam-type materials, the structure will certainly be called a pergola. Adding a flat and completely covered roof to the pergola, however, confuses the title a bit.

If you add a flat covering to the pergola ceiling, it may be mistaken for a pavilion. A pavilion is similar to a pergola, with the exception that the roof is always completely covered. Still, pavilions tend to be rather large, whereas pergolas are small.

If you add a flat covering to a small pergola, people will likely still refer to it as a pergola. If the pergola is really large and has a flat covering, however, most people will call it a pavilion. Keeping the pergola shaped round, hexagonal, or octagonal will especially help the structure retain its pergola status.

We know that this is not an exact answer to your question, but an exact answer does not exist. Unfortunately, naming outside structures is a bit difficult because most people use the names in different ways. So long as you stick to a smaller size structure, the structure will likely be called a pergola, even if it has a flat roof.

This pergola comes with a permanent hard top roof which is also adjustable. It comes with instructions and all the tools necessary to craft the pergola, or a third party installation service can be purchased.

How Can I Add A Pitch To My Deck Roof

How To Build A Pergola Roof – DIY At Bunnings

I want to add a metal roof to my deck, but it is currently flat. It has a perogala roof on it and I want to cover it to avoid rain and add shade. Is it possible to add a pitch to it even if it is slight to help with water drainage? How hard would it be? Thanks for any help.

Some pictures would help. Most importantly before deciding on what type of roof and how to install it, you need to make sure the structure meets code to install a roof. Depending where in the country you are located that will vary. You need to make sure the structure will support a roof load as well as a snow load. The pergola will also need to be anchored properly to the foundation for the added wind forces it will now under go.

As far as construction you could add tapered rafters or possibly trusses on top of the perlins to add slope. Another option to consider might be a flat lock, soldered seam metal roof and a gutter, then you would not need to add slope.

Looks like it is built pretty good, I see hurricane clips on the perlins. Cant see how it is attached at the bottom.

I am assuming you are looking to do it as a diy project? Ill just tell you What I would do if I was doing it at my house, you need to make sure it meets code in your area.

Once they are all on I would add a row of 2×12 blocking at the ridge from one 2×12 to the next to form a sold ridge. Then add some hurricane straps on the insides tieing the 2×12 to the 2×6.
