How To Refinish Wrought Iron Patio Set

Removing Flaking Paint And Rust

Refinishing wrought iron patio furniture

My dad taught me everything I know about fixing things. Ive helped to re-shingle a couple of roofs, painted more rooms than I care to remember, done a tiny bit of electrical work, and worked on a few other odds and ends. Im not the best handywoman in the world, but I can hold my own.

So, when I saw the flaking paint and rust on my outdoor furniture set, I knew that it would have to be scraped off and sanded prior to repainting. I used a paint scraper to remove any paint flakes and then used a fine grade steel wool to sand it down. Mine were grade #00 . You could go with a coarser grade and Im sure it would be fine.

How To Paint Rusty Metal Furniture

Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, that’s not exposed to direct sun or strong wind, which can affect the adhesion of the paint. To protect surfaces from overspray, lay down a drop cloth and make sure you’re not spraying too close to the side of your house or other areas where you don’t want paint.

How To Know If Your Wrought Iron Furniture Needs Renewing

There are 3 indicators that your wrought iron furniture needs renewing. If you spot any of those 3, I highly recommend that you take action immediately and fix the problem right away. If you dont it will only get worse with time. So which indicators am I talking about?

-Rust

Rust is the biggest enemy of iron. If you see any rust you should remove it immediately before it is too late. It will only spread if you do not remove it and eventually weaken your furniture up to the point where it will break. For those of you that do not know how rust looks like, it is brown and kind of bubbly. We will talk about how to remove it later

-Cracks

Cracks are bad because they can only get bigger and eventually break your chair. Not only this but when there is a crack there is usually also rust. If there is none of it yet I assure you that it will come soon. So if your chairs or table have any rust on them it would be good to take them to a welder to fix the problem. You will also have to repaint later on.

-Paint that is peeling off

This is the easiest to repair but only if there is no rust on yet. Keep in mind that the paint is also protecting your iron furniture from rusting so once it is off there is no more protection. If that is the case for you, then you may skip the process of removing rust and just follow the first and the last step.

How to Refinish Wrought Iron Patio Furniture

Once upon a time, about fifteen years ago, a sweet friend of our family offered to share her old wrought iron patio chairs and table with us. Being new homeowners, my husband and I jumped at the chance of being given nice, sturdy, outside furniture. Weve always lived outside the box, so taking other peoples old items and making them our treasures is nothing new! We used the wrought iron furniture for a while, but then it became a little less-than-stable and we moved it to the back 40. Its actually taken a lot longer than we ever anticipated to restore our wrought iron patio furniture because, well, they were covered with weeds!!! But making new beautiful wrought iron furniture is definitely possible! Keep reading to see how you can restore your wrought iron patio furniture and make it new again.

After digging our wrought iron furniture out of the weeds I mean, storage the above it what we had to work with. As you can see, the table has a serious sway-back issue, one chair has completely collapsed into pieces, and the last chair standing is missing some of the wood from the seat. We had a long way to go to make this furniture usable again. How did we get started??? Its much easier than you think!

How To Clean Wrought Iron Patio Furniture: 6 Easy Steps

Every outdoor patio piece eventually needs some maintenance and basic cleaning. Its just part of being outdoors!

Taking care of wrought iron patio furniture at least twice a year is a great way to avoid rust and other problems. It also keeps your patio furniture in good condition.

If possible, it is best to choose a day that has nice weather to expedite the drying process! You can choose to perform your maintenance at the beginning of the season or the end of the season. Cleaning the furniture should only take a few minutes.

    Materials Youll Need:

Youll need a couple of basic materials to get started on cleaning your patio furniture:

    • Water for rinsing: you can use a power washer, a hose, or simply a bucket of water
    • Bucket
    • Liquid soap with no bleach
    • A brush with soft bristles
    • Clean rag or cloth

Its important to choose a mild liquid soap with no bleach, as bleach has been proven to be more likely to corrode iron.

    Touch Up Using Spray Paint

After allowing the paint to cure overnight, touch up any missed spots using spray paint. It is not possible to get all the nooks and crannies with a paint roller, and it takes too long using a small brush. I used Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Flat Black Spray Paint by Rust-oleum, which worked very well and dried quickly. I highly recommend it for touching up and smaller paint jobs!

Heres my metal outdoor side table. I picked it up for free last year from a neighbor through a Facebook Freebie group. Its a small round metal outdoor side table. Very unassuming. But I see a lot of potential in it. It would be perfect in a corner of my patio to hold a small planter, or sit next to my chair for my morning tea or a good book. Or hold a Sangria pitcher and glasses for two.

My Wrought Iron Patio Furniture Needed Restoration

    Wie Möbel Refinish #UpcycledMöbel

My four wrought iron chairs used to be ivory white when I got them for Mother’s Day sometime in the last century. If they were sold on Etsy, they would definitely be classified as “vintage.”

About ten years ago, I gave my oldest daughter the chairs when she and her husband moved into their first home. Of course, she did not like the ivory colorwhite really shows environmental dirt and mildewso she spray-painted them black. Not knowing any better, she did not sand the original paint before applying the new paint. You can guess what happened afterthe black paint flaked off! After years of repainting, she gave up and returned them to me. Luckily, there was only a little bit of rust that could be sanded off easily.

Here is the correct way to refurbish wrought iron chairs the right way.

Remove Any Loose Paint And Surface Rust

Preparation is key for any paint job. If you are patient and take your time sanding the surface to a smooth and clean feel, youâll get a much more durable and beautiful finish.

    • Use a paint scraper or wire brush to remove loose or peeling paint.
    • Scrape or sand off any rust that you can see.

I found that I could quickly get the loose old paint off the chairs by using a pressure washer.

    • If you do not have a pressure washer, adjust your spray nozzle to the thin, jet spray.
    • Turn your water tap on full blast.
    • Allow the chairs to dry thoroughly.

Sand off as much paint and rust as possible. You want to get a smooth and even finish with no flakes or loose parts.

    Dont Skip The Priming Step

Once youve prepped your metal outdoor furniture, Henry says to prime the piece with a high-quality rust preventive spray primer, such as Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Spray Paint Primer . Choose a white primer for lighter colors and a dark primer for darker ones, she says. Spray slowly at an 8-to-12-inch distance, in a consistent spray pattern, lengthwise along each section, to avoid drips and overspray. Remember to treat the back and underside since outdoor furniture can collect moisture and condensation in the crannies. After applying two to three light coats of primer, allowing the primer to dry between each coat, she suggests lightly sanding the piece with very fine sandpaper and wiping it off with a non-wax tack cloth to remove the dust.

What About Stains On My Concrete Patio

Rust on concrete or pavers can be a bit more complicated than rust on wood because the rust tends to seep down a bit further.

Luckily the same natural methods of lemon juice or vinegar should work to remove most of the stain. Simply pour the vinegar on the spot, let it sit for about a half-hour, and then scrub it was a brush.

After you have scrubbed to loosen up the rust, you can wash the area down with water.

If a natural solution is not working to remove your rust stain, then some chemicals can help, but they are usually a bit harsh. Professional cleaning companies also can be hired for severe stains.
