Is It Okay To Wash Paint Off Without Using A Stripper

How to Remove a Concrete Patio

If you prefer to skip the paint stripper and just blast the paint away from the concrete surface without the help of any chemicals, you can also do that. In fact, ditching the chemicals is advisable if you have small kids and pets at home.

What are the alternatives?

For one, you can also use sodium bicarbonate, which is more commonly known as baking soda, as an alternative to the paint stripper. You can fill your pressure washers reservoir with baking soda and then spray the area you wish to clean.

You can also go for non-toxic paint strippers, which are available in the market. Theres Soy Gel, which is a biodegradable, low-odor, and non-toxic paint stripper that uses American-grown soybeans instead of methylene chloride to remove paint from surfaces.

Of course, you can also just use water with your pressure washer and skip any other softening solution altogether. But as to whether it will completely get rid of the paint depends on the condition of your concrete surface and the paint used.

Most people can remove concrete themselves, provided theres plenty of ibuprofen and a heating pad in the house. Find out how.

Whats In a Slab?

A typical outdoor concrete slab ranges from 3-6 inches thick. Patios and stoops tend to be on the thin side, with driveways at the thicker end of the range. A slab may contain reinforcing metal, in the form or wire mesh and/or rebar. Theres no way of knowing whats in there until you start breaking up the concrete. You might get lucky and have no steel in your slab . Below the slab is a compacted gravel subbase. This might be a few inches thick or a lot thicker, depending on the site conditions. After you break up and remove the concrete, youll have to dig out all the gravel, to make room for plant-nourishing soil.

How Do I Remove Textured Paint From My Patio Floor

How to Remove Your Concrete Patio

My patio flooring has a paint-like texture on it that is chipping off. The base is concrete. I have tried scraping, but its incredibly tedious to get up and is taking hours of work. Is there some sort of chemical or solution I can use to help the paint/texture lift easier?

You say paint-like texture. Are you sure its paint?

If its paint, any sort of chemical paint stripper should do the trick. There are quite a number of more friendlycitrus or orange based paint strippers that dont have the smell and toxic concerns of paint strippers of the past.

I presume a patio is outdoors, so a pressure washer may do the trick. Aim the blast at the currently chipped edges to allow the water to get underneath them and lift. You may need to shoot the water almost horizontally for the more stubborn bits. Aiming at a fairly well covered area is unlikely to get a hole started. If youve got enough pressure to do that, though, youve got a non-zero chance of actually damaging the concrete underneath, too, so turn down the pressure.

If youre not sure what youve got, try taking a few flakes to a local paint store to see if the can ID it for you and make a recommendation.
