Installing A Clear Pergola Roof Was The Best Decision Ever It Has Turned Our Side Yard Is A Three Season Patio That We Can Enjoy In Any Weather

We love our new patio pergola, but the only thing that could make it better was installing a clear pergola roof. Now even if it decides to rain for an entire month , we can still enjoy gatherings on the patio.

Adding a roof to a pergola seems like a big deal, but we partnered with the Home Depot to make it easy! Now we cannot wait for another storm so we can test out our new clear pergola roof.

After installing the SunTuf corrugated roofing on the kids outdoor playhouse, I knew I wanted to use it again. It looks so nice and is absolutely DIY friendly.

But my favorite part is that it lets the light in but blocks out the UV rays. Blocking UV rays on the patio means all our patio furniture will last longer. No more fading and sun bleaching! And we can enjoy the patio even if the weather decides to rain out another of our parties!

The biggest decision we had was whether to use the same Solar Gray color on the patio as we had on the playhouse roof. I love that the playhouse has the extra shading so the kids can play in it all summer long and it stays a bit cooler.

Originally I had planned on using the shading color for the patio pergola too. Then I realized the patio is completely shaded by the house in the late afternoon on and our neighbors trees block most of the direct sun in the morning, so we would only have direct sun for a small portion of the day.

Building On An Existing Deck

Where local building codes allow this practice, you can bolt a patio overheads posts directly to existing deck beams, joists, or other heavy structural members. Or, you can lag-screw through post bases and decking into the top of a deck joist or beam.

When bolting to the decks structure, be sure to use heavy-duty galvanized lag screws that are long enough to penetrate the decks framing by at least 2 inches.

In some situations, you may be able to use the homes structure to support an overhead above a deck. For a good example of this, see the article This Patio Roof Sheds Water, Allows Natural Light.

When learning how to repair a leak where a patio roof meets the main roof, there are some important considerations you should make such as whether the patio roof will be able to support your weight. Patio roofs are typically weaker and less reinforced than main roofs, but holes can easily be repaired with the right tools, materials, and instructions. Take a read through the steps below to repair the roof joint without damaging your home and your patio.

Step 1 Install Temporary Supports

Youll want to make sure that the patio roof can support your weight by installing wooden posts during the repair process. Purchase 2 long pieces of wood measured at 2 by 6 inches for the height of your patio roof. Attach shorter pieces of wood to the top of the longer pieces with nails in a T-shape. This will provide more support. Take 1 post and position the top of its T on the underside of the roof around 1 foot from where the hole is. Have the post tilted a little bit so that itll fit under the patio roof. Now, use a hammer to tap the bottom of the post in the right direction until its vertical. Do the same for the other post, also 1 foot away from the hole but in the opposite direction.

Pilot Holes And Fasteners

Before installing a corrugated metal panel, be sure to drill pilot holes in the panel. The diameter of the pilot holes will depend on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Often the holes are larger than needed to allow for thermal expansion of the panel. Plan on drilling a pilot hole in the panel at every other rib of the closure strips, for each set of closure strips that the panel covers. Use the fasteners that come with most corrugated metal roofing kits. These fasteners have a rubber seal below the head to help create a tight bond.

How To Shingle A Porch Roof

Patio Roof Repair

Adding shingles to a porch roof is no different than adding shingles to a roof of a home or any other building. The only major difference is that a porch is much smaller, so the job is a lot easier and quicker to do. With a porch, there are not so many essential structural elements that need to be taken into consideration. Anyone with basic DIY skills and the right tools and equipment at their disposal should be able to do it themselves without having to spend money on professional tradesmen.

Step 1-Taking the Measurements

The first thing to do is take the measurements of the roof that you are going to build. When you have the measurements you will know how much materials to order. It is a good idea to obtain 5 to 10 percent more than you are expecting to use so there is no risk of running out.

Step 2-Making Preparations

If you are renovating an old roof, remove the old shingles first. If it is a new roof, install the tar sheeting on top of the sheathing. If you are renovating the roof, you may want to use new sheeting anyway if the old underlay is in poor condition. The tar sheeting should be stapled in place and should cover everything to prevent any leakage. If the porch is an open porch anyway, this is not so important.

Step 3-Placing the Shingles

Finally, install flashing at the joints of the roof to make a waterproof seal.

Check For Holes Or Tears In The Flashing

Cracks, tears, and holes in the flashing material are all likely suspects. Also, check for places where leaves and twigs may have built up and prevented water from draining away. Its also a good time to assess the general health of the roof. Leaks can often be symptomatic of an old roof that needs to be replaced.

If the roof is flat or low-pitched, look for penetrations or blocked drains. Another trouble area may be indicated by puddleslow spots from which the water cant drain. While youre walking around, feel for soft spots under the roof surface that may indicate damage caused by water.

If you have trouble finding the leak, you might want to try to reproduce it by soaking different spots with a garden hose or bucket of water. Have someone on the inside watch out for telltale signs and call when they appear.

Building Over An Existing Slab

If you are building an overhead to cover an existing patio, you must first determine if local codes allow setting it directly on the slab and, if so, is the concrete thick enough to support the weight. Otherwise, you will have to create original footings for the overhead. If you need help with this project, get free bids from local patio roof construction pros.

In many areas, an overhead on a concrete slab is allowable if the slab is at least 3 1/2 inches thick and each post can support combined live and dead loads of up to 750 pounds .

To secure an overhead to an already-existing slab, you must place each post in a post anchor. Standard anchors work with rough and surfaced 4-by-4, 4-by-6, and 6-by-6 posts; any other size anchor will have to be specially ordered.

Browse Materials for This Project on Amazon Masonry Drill Bits

To install a masonry anchor, use a drill with a masonry-bit attachment to make a hole large enough for a 1/2-inch expanding anchor bolt. After inserting the bolt, secure the post anchor by adding a washer and nut and tightening with a wrench. Cut the end of the post square, sit it in the base, pre-drill holes in the post, and then nail the anchor to the post.

Another way to fasten the post anchor is by securing a short piece of threaded rod in a hole with epoxy cement. Start by drilling a hole slightly larger than the threaded rod.
