The days are becoming longer, and the air is getting warmer. Summer is just around the corner. With only a few weeks until the truly scorching heat of summer begins, it is time to figure out whether or not your home is ready for the hot months to come. Sure, it is nice to have a clean interior, but summer is all about being outside and spending time in the backyard with friends and family. The backyard is an iconic setting of many summer adventures and activities, so it is vital that a person is prepared and with a fully functional yard to not only accommodate, but also impress his or her guests all season long. We here at Duramax Building Products believe that one of the best ways to dress up a back yard is to install a patio cover area. These areas not only look beautiful next to a home, but also create a shady spot for when the sun becomes just a little bit too much to handle. When it comes to vinyl patio covers, you have options as well. Modern patio covers, whether attached to the house or free standing like a Pergola, are manufactured in a variety of materials. These materials are not all created equal.

The Best Fabric For Outdoor Cushions

Bold, Strong, Lasting Types of Patio Cover Materials

When it comes to determining the best material for your outdoor cushions, there are several factors to consider. First, and foremost, you need to decide where youll be using them. Cushions used in outdoor spaces like an enclosed patio or a deck with a roof will be protected from the elements and can afford to be a little less robust. On the other end of the spectrum, outdoor seating options like a garden bench will have cushions that will be left outside all the time, so they should be crafted from hardier material to stand up to precipitation and sunlight.

Climate and geography are another consideration. Wetter areas, like the Pacific Northwest and humid Southern regions prone to hurricanes and frequent storms, may have cushion material requirements that differ from those of the hot, arid Southwest, for example.

And, of course, not all material for outside cushions is created equal. Its wise to read the fine print about what weather hazards a cushion can reasonably accommodate without deteriorating, and choose according to your needs.

All things considered, including style, durability, and aesthetics, the vote for the best patio cover would have to go to wood.

For starters, its the most eco-friendly choice. Theres also a timeless appeal to it thats quite hard to replicate with any other material.

Wood is naturally elegant and beautiful. If you want a visually pleasing patio, wood is definitely an excellent option.

However, this doesnt come without a price. Wood actually requires high maintenance because its also prone to rotting and warping. Still, its benefits far outweigh its drawbacks.

For comparison, here are the downsides to acrylic and aluminum:

Acrylic or Vinyl: Its not visually appealing. Sure, its pretty easy to maintain. But for lack of a better term, it has the tendency to look cheap.

Aluminum: Although it has great merits for its durability and lightweight properties, aluminum has a major problem with heat retention.

As we all know, metal is a conductor of heat. Like acrylic, its also easy to maintain but it can get pretty hot especially on humid days, which can be uncomfortable.

Although they may look the same, the materials used on outdoor cushions vary drastically. This is important because cheap covers can lead to mold and mildew due to a lack of water resistant properties. They will also fade and loose color in the sun after one or two Summer seasons.

Vinyl also known as PVC. A plastic material that is probably the least expensive option. Vinyl cushion fabrics do not do very well in the heat. They can get extremely hot while sitting under the sun and give a nice burn when you first sit down. Its the same thing as getting into a car thats been sitting in the sun. Ouch! PVC is also a non-recyclable material. Be nice. #SaveOurEarth

Cotton Canvas an age-old fabric that dates back to the 13th century. Cotton fabric is economical and it can be dyed. The fabric is not water resistant so you may experience problems with mold and/or mildew. Need to be treated with a water proof application once a year. Not safe for chlorine.

Texteline a mesh woven material made from polyester yarns that are coated with PVC. Again, they will get hot in the sun but the yarn adds more strength to the covers. They arent as susceptible to rips and tears from zippers and buttons. Texteline cushions are waterproof but they are known to lose color and fade in the sun. Do not use bleach on texteline covers because it will degrade the PVC coating. Mid grade outdoor cushion material.
