A regular or traditional pergola is usually made from wood and does not have any type of cover to protect from sun, rain or snow. A retractable roof or what some term a retractable awning cover is a structure made of either aluminum or wood and has a retractable or rotating louver roof that provides protection from the elements including sun/rain or sun/rain/snow.

Who Are They Appropriate For

Freestanding awnings are an excellent business and residential solution.

They can match perfectly the needs of people who:

  • Cannot attach a retractable awning or retractable pergola to their building because of low roof height, lack of mounting space, not strong enough walls and other limitations.
  • Want to shade a particular spot like a patio that is not adjacent to a building
  • Want to protect their outdoor furniture from harmful UV rays or heavy rain
  • Like to have more flexibility and might want to change the location of the awning
  • Want to cover outdoor poolside or hot tub areas
  • Own restaurants, outdoor bars, cafes or spacious patios and decks

Shade Sail Canopy For A Pergola

These can be very attractive, with a modern, sleek appearance, and act as a very effective canopy for a pergola.

Supplied as pre-manufactured kits, they are a convenient way to add an attractive feature to your garden quickly. Buy the sail with the attachment kit, and you’ll be up and running in no time.

However, the smallest shade sails tend to be around 3m square. If your pergola is smaller, it’s easy enough to make your own.

Do make sure that the supporting structure is strong enough to take the tension on the sails.

You will need:

  • Some shower-proof or waterproof material. You may wish to have fabric that also has UV protection.
  • Strong metal rings to fit onto the corners of the sail itself. these will attach to…
  • 3 or 4 Pad Eyes, depending on whether your shade sail is triangular or rectangular. You will need a strong structure on which to attach these as the tensioning pressure is great.
  • 3 or 4 Snap Hooks that join the metal rings attached to your shade sail to the supporting structure pad eyes.
  • A tensioner.
  • Fixing kits contain all that you need to fix both triangular and square shade sails.

Here is a triangular shade sail canopy for a pergola…

…and here is a pergola kit with rectangular shade sails attached…

Either use the metal fixing kit mentioned above, or alternatively use a strong hook, and make loops for the hook to pass over.

You may need something strong to lever the last loop over the hook in order to create the tension needed

Install The Wire Rope On The Eye Screws

Looping the ends of the wire ropes around the screw eyes is a somewhat tricky operation:

  • First, fit a cable thimble through one of the eye screws, then slide the end of one of each wire rope through the eye screw and over the cable thimble so it fits into the thimble’s groove.
  • At the other end of the wire rope, fit a cable clamp over the rope and slide it up to the thimble area so both strands of the wire rope are threaded through the clamp’s opening.
  • With a wrench, tighten down the clamp so that the wire rope forms a tight loop over the thimble.
  • Repeat for the other two wire ropes and eye screws.
  • The three wire ropes should now be anchored to the support beam at one end of the pergola, with the opposite ends of the wire ropes still hanging free.

    Size The Canopy Fabric

When fully extended, the canopy must be the size of the pergola’s area, plus at least 20 percent longer to accommodate draping. Heavier cloth such as sailcloth will sag more muslin and linen will sag less. Determine the look you wish to achieve when the canopy is extended. Tighter cloth has a trim, finished look. Cloth with deeper sags gives your pergola an airy, fanciful look. Find the area of your pergola by multiplying its length by its width.

Attach The Support Bars To The Canopy

DIY Simple Retractable Canopy for Your Pergola

To attach the canopy fabric to the support bars:

  • Stretch the canopy out on a clean surface.
  • Using a tape measure and tailor’s chalk or a carpenter’s pencil, lightly mark intended support bar locations along the edges of the canopy fabric. For the canopy to slide properly, the support bars must be parallel to each other and all bars should be perpendicular to the sides of the canopy. Support bars should be located at each end of the canopy, as well.
  • At each pair of marks, slide a support bar under the canopy and staple the canopy to the bar. Repeat for every set of marks.

    Stain The Support Bars

Cedar wood naturally weathers to a silvery-gray color and its oils keep it protected for many years. But if you would like added protection or a different look, you may choose to treat the cedar boards with semi-transparent stain or solid color stain.

Let the stain dry fully before proceeding to the next step.

    Clampdown Your Canopy Fabric

Attach each side of your canopy fabric to double-sided hooks by threading one hook through a cord rope and then attaching it to the other side before tightening both cords so that they can hold up their portion of the cover securely at all times.

TIP: Keep in mind that your canopy will need to be opened and closed using these cords, so make sure they are strong enough to safely support the weight of the fabric.

Freestanding Retractable Awnings And Retractable Pergolas

Retractable lateral arm or drop arm awnings are a great addition to residential and business buildings. Still, they might not be the ideal solution for everyone. Many people need to cover small, medium or large areas that might not be adjacent to a building. Therefore, a wall-mounted awning would not be beneficial.

Freestanding retractable awnings and freestanding retractable pergolas might be the perfect choice for such cases. Some are heavy-duty and strong framed that will add style to your design and add functionality to your outdoor space transforming it into your own personal vacation spot.

Attach The Drawstring To The Canopy End

Cut two pieces of nylon rope, each the length of your pergola plus another 4 feet. Tie each to the end support bar, one at each end. Drape each drawstring over a horizontal support beam at the end of the pergola.

Pulling the drawstrings down will move the pergola canopy horizontally along the wire ropes to extend it. Loop the drawstrings around the cleats to hold them in place. Retracting the canopy will involve removing the drawstrings from around the cleats, and sliding the canopy back to the fixed end by hand.

Install The Eye Screws On The Support Bars

    DIY Retractable Pergola Canopy Awning

Stretch out the canopy and lay it on a clean surface. The canopy can be oriented so that the wooden support bars are either above or below the canopy fabric. Installing the bars above the fabric gives the cover a clean look that emphasizes the draping. Installing the bars below the fabric means that the bars will be visible from below. This is a stronger attachment since the support bars, not just staples, are holding up the fabric.

Attach three of the #10 eye screws on top of every support bar. Space the eye screws so that they match the spacing of the three eye screws you previously installed on the pergola beams. Be sure to drill pilot holes to avoid cracking the wood.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Retractable Awning Or Retractable Pergola

The popularity of outdoor living spaces in residential and commercial properties across the globe is directly correlated with an impressive increase in the retractable awning and retractable pergola interest. From expanding space to protecting buildings from weather elements and from saving on energy bills to enhancing a propertys curb appeal, the benefits linked to installing a retractable pergola or retractable awning are virtually endless.

The range of pergolas and various awnings is now so extensive that sometimes it is tough to choose. Before you make such a purchase, you should understand what is an awning or pergola. You need to determine what features you need and what you want your yard to look like when you want to spend time in the yard. This article puts together a few essential factors regarding the differences between an awning vs. a pergola.

    Cut The Canopy Support Bars

The canopy fabric will be stabled to 2×2 cedar supports bars, which will then be suspended from support wires using eye screws that allow the canopy to slide back and forth.

With a power miter saw or circular saw, cut 2×2 boards to the width of the canopy. Generally, plan on one board for about every 18 inches of the canopy’s length, though the exact spacing is up to you. Increasing the number of boards creates a scalloped, ribbed look. Fewer boards produce larger, lower drapes.

What Is The Difference Between Water Resistant Water Repellent And Waterproof

Water-resistant – This offers the lowest level of water protection. If a retractable awning fabric resists water, its usually because the fabric itself is acting as a barrier between you and a very light shower. Tightly woven fabrics will offer a very small degree of water resistance, as it takes some time for the water to seep through the material. It is not impervious to water penetration but can stand a very limited exposure to precipitation. However, with the addition of a coating or impregnation, you can make a retractable awning fabric water repellent.

Water repellent – a step up from water resistance and offers a medium level of water protection. This means that water cant easily penetrate the material . It beads on the outside instead. However, as soon as you apply pressure like the skies suddenly opening and releasing a whole load of heavy rain, rainwater starts to seep in through the coating, the fabric, and onto your patio or deck.

Waterproof – A waterproof material or product is one that is completely impervious to water penetration and offers the highest level of water protection including heavy rain. No water can get in or out of the product or material or around the edges. A waterproof material or product is able to provide sustained protection from water.

RetractableAwnings.com does not offer water-resistant fabric. We only offer water repellent fabrics on our folding lateral arm awnings and waterproof fabrics on all* of our retractable roof pergolas.

How to Make a Slide-On Wire Hung Canopy (Pergola Canopy)

Add extra shade and style to your outdoor living space with a wire-hung canopy system. These billowing shades easily slide on the cables they hang from so you can have shade when you want it and retract them when you want a little more sun. A wire-hung canopy can be installed on any pergola or other freestanding structure. Our comprehensive video will show you step-by-step how to sew your own canopy panels and install them on a pergola.

To make planning your slide-on wire-hung canopy easier, we created a new Wire-Hung Canopy Fabric Calculator just for this project. By inputting the dimensions of your structure and the width of your fabric youll not only get a fabric rendering, but youll also get a breakdown of how to build your canopy and a complete, custom materials list based on your measurements.

When it comes to choosing a fabric for this project, we recommend using either Phifertex® Plus or Sunbrella® Marine Grade. Both provide good shade and durability out in the elements. If you choose to use Sunbrella Marine Grade, though, you will need to install drainage grommets in the center of each span so rainwater wont gather on the panels. Since Phifertex Plus is a mesh, it will drain the water on its own, making the grommet unnecessary.

Here’s a PDF download with instructions and a photo tutorial of how to make the alternative webbing strap system.
