Are you patching a minor area or a large one? You are dealing with a horizontal surface, so some of the thicker patches in the vertical surfaces wont be as good.
Most of the patches are suitable for indoors and outdoors. They are all tougher than concrete surfaces and are waterproof. But, there, as with any construction product, there are specific instructions.
But, we can generalize that patching is recommended for temperatures above 50 degrees only. And are not to be wet once the curing process begins.
The Pavers Along A Fixed Edge Are Disappearing
Cause: The gravel base and sand setting bed have escaped and washed out from under the pavers.
Solution: Using a filter fabric under the base and up the sides of the project excavation will prevent this from happening. It is possible to fix just this one area, without starting completely over. A piece of filter fabric can be patched in and new base can be added and the pavers reinstalled.
How To Fix Pavers That Are Holding Water
Landscape pavers that hold water indicate erosion of the base material under the pavers. Even the most meticulously installed patios are prone to settling over the time. As the ground shifts and rain washes away the base material, small pits form in the patio, providing space for water to pool. This is a simple fix because most patio pavers require no mortar to bind them together, making it easy to get to the base material beneath.

Pry up all the pavers that collect water, including level pavers along the perimeter of the settling pavers. Wedge a flat bar between pavers and lever the pavers up.

Take note of the location of each paver as you remove them so you can easily piece the patio together later. This is only important if the pavers are different sizes.

Dig out mud or sunken soil from the pit beneath the pavers, using a small garden trowel.

Pour ground limestone in the sunken area and fill it up to soil level.

Pack the ground limestone tightly with a hand tamper to create a sturdy surface for the pavers.

Add sand on top of the ground limestone, adding 1 inch at a time. Pack the sand, then check to see if the sand is the same height as the sand under the surrounding level pavers.

Place the pavers back in place on the patio. Replace any broken or damaged pavers. Tap the pavers in place with a rubber mallet.

Sweep In Polymeric Sand
This step is optional, but recommended! Polymeric sand is pretty neat stuff. When moistened with water, it hardens somewhat like concrete to keep the pavers from shifting. It also inhibits weed growth.
Pour out some polymeric sand over the pavers, and use a broom to sweep it between the cracks. If youre working in a small area, whomp the pavers with the rubber mallet to help settle the polymeric sand. For large areas, use a powered compactor.
Some cracks will fill easily, while others will need some encouragement. As you strike the pavers with the rubber mallet, youll see some of the sand disappear. Add more sand until it no longer disappears. I find it works best to strike the edges of the pavers rather than the centres.
Set the polymeric sand by gently spraying it with water, according to the package instructions. You dont need a lot of water! There should be no standing water on top of the cracks. Ideally, this should be done on a day when there is no rain expected for at least 24 hours.
Congratulations! Youre done! That wasnt so hard, was it? Hopefully your paved walkway, stairs or patio will remain rock solid for another few years.
Optional Step 1: Install Extra Bond Beams
Concrete bond beams are typically installed on the outer perimeter where the pavers abut up against any soft-scape surfaces such as grass, gravel, dirt, etc. and its purpose is to inhibit the pavers from moving laterally. For added assurance, you can include/insert a concrete bond beam every 10-15 feet. What this does is add another layer of support and essentially locks down and/or contains the pavers within each 10-15 foot span which disperses the pressure/load.

How To Properly Level A Patio Or Walkway

Dear Charlie: A brick patio and surround for the fish pond can be a very attractive addition to your landscaping. You might want to consider using patio pavers instead of ordinary bricks because the pavers are usually more decorative and they are made to fit together perfectly.
Whether you use bricks or patio pavers, laying the base and the leveling process are identical. Leveling is the proper term to use, but you do not want the patio to be level. A slight slope away from the pond will keep rainwater from carrying patio dirt into the pond. One-eighth-inch slope per foot length should be more than adequate.
A two-inch layer of crushed gravel covered by another two-inch layer of sand should be a good base for the patio. Always use crushed gravel, not pea gravel which will roll around. The angular edges of crush gravel lock the pieces together for a much more stable base.
First, determine the height for the top surface of the finished patio. Drive wooden grade stakes in the ground around the perimeter of the patio so the tops are at the finished height. Locate them seven feet apart to facilitate creating a smooth surface for the gravel and sand.

Solution: There are a couple of types of edge restraints that paver installers can use. The most popular one used in our area is a PVC edging that gets spiked into the gravel base that the pavers are installed on. In order to fix it, the pavers need to be pulled up, more base and sand need to be added underneath and an edge restraint needs to be installed.

Pavers Sinking In Areas
Sunken pavers are not only an eyesore, but they are also typically a warning sign of a larger problem. In fact, a paver patio that is sinking in areas very likely might have a drainage problem that was left unaddressed prior to construction. This issue will need to be addressed and corrected and then pavers will need to be re-laid.
Of course, it could also just be that the base was not properly prepared before the pavers were laid. The base material layer is the most critical element of the entire patio construction.
Preparing a base requires proper excavation . Failing to excavate deep enough can be another reason for sunken pavers and ultimate patio failure. Poor soils and trash left from builders absolutely must be removed during the excavation as overstabilization of the patio site is extremely important to its integrity.
At times, you cant just excavate to the standard 10 inches and move on. If you go down to 10 inches, find theres old fill dirt, poor soils, or other problems, you have to keep going. Oftentimes the inferior soil that is uncovered during excavation is the result of water issues in the house that also bear correcting.
Using the proper amount of fill of modified crushed stone within the excavated site is also part of base preparation. This stone is graded properly, then compacted to form a solid base, a few inches at a time until the finished depth is achieved.
