Why Do The Subgrade And Subbase Allow The Concrete To Move At All Shouldn’t It Be Completely Rigid
The fact is that any soil or gravel base course is going to compress if the load is high enough, unless the slab is placed on solid rock. And in some ways that’s good, because slabs curl and if the base can deflect a little, it can continue to provide support for the slab even when it curls. But if it doesn’t provide uniform support, if the slab has to bridge over soft spots, the slab will probably crack. There doesn’t even need to be much of a load on the slab–its own weight is usually enough since a slab on grade is not typically designed to even carry the dead load. And when it does crack, that crack is going to go all the way through the slab. If the under-slab support is bad enough, you can then get differential settlement across the crack that leaves a very unfortunate bump and a very unhappy owner.

How Do You Make A Concrete Patio Look Like Concrete

Pumping starts with the pouring of concrete from the ready mix truck into a tank large enough to hold a small amount of fresh concrete. In the mixing drum, the mixer allows fresh concrete to flow smoothly into the pumping cylinder. Concrete piston pump works on the same principle as a twin piston engine in which a cylinder removes concrete from the cylinder on its rotational stroke. And another is pushed into the line The pistons in both cylinders work in opposite directions, so there is constan

How To Lay A Slab Using Concrete Mix
Measure, mark using a Carpenters square, cut squarely and nail the formwork together so that the internal measurement is the required dimensions for the slab.
With square or rectangular slabs, ensure that the formwork is true to square by measuring the diagonals between the opposite corners – these must be equal for the shape to be correctly square.
The height of the timber used for your formwork should equal the thickness of your concrete slab to enable you to screed the finished surface level with the top of the formwork.
Place the formwork in situ and use a spade to mark around the outside edge of the formwork. This will mark the area you will need to dig out to the required depth.
Move the formwork out of the way and dig out the area for the slab to the required dimensions. Allow an extra 5 cm of depth for a bed of crusher dust or road base under the slab.
Place the formwork back in position and ensure that it is level using a spirit level. You might need to dig a trench to ensure that the formwork is set at the correct height. Backfill against the formwork so that it stays in place, and hammer in timber pegs at 100 cm intervals on the outside of the formwork to hold it firmly in position whilst you pour your slab.
Ensure the pegs are level with or below the top of the formwork so that it is possible to screed the surface when the concrete is poured.

How To Build & Install Patio Forms
1. A form is a frame, usually made from 2 Ã 4 lumber, laid around a project site to contain poured concrete and establish its thickness. Cut 2 Ã 4s to create a frame with inside dimensions equal to the total size of the project.
2. Use the masonâs strings that outline the project as a reference for setting form boards in place. Starting with the longest form board, position the boards so the inside edges are directly below the strings.
3. Cut several pieces of 2 Ã 4 at least 12″ long to use as stakes. Trim one end of each stake to a sharp point. Drive the stakes at 3-ft. intervals at the outside edges of the form boards, positioned to support any joints in the form boards.
4. Drive 3″ Deck Screws through the stakes and into the form board on one side. Set a level so it spans the staked side of the form and the opposite form board, and use the level as a guide as you stake the second form board so it is level with the first. For large projects, use the masonâs strings as the primary guide for setting the height of all form boards.
5. Once the forms are staked and leveled, drive 3â deck screws at the corners. Coat the insides of the forms with vegetable oil or a commercial release agent so concrete wonât bond to them.

The soil you build your concrete pad on needs to be compact and well-drained to ensure the best concrete slab results.
Concrete is a porous material so drainage cant be an issue. Otherwise, water under the concrete pad will result in stress cracks in the cement as the ground flexes.
When you take the steps to prepare the subsurface, you limit the risk of cracks in your finished concrete.

When adding a patio to your home landscape, plan for patio drainage before you begin construction. Proper drainage will prevent tipping, shifting, and post-frost heaving of your patio and will keep water from seeping into your basement. When done correctly, this sloping procedure will be invisible but will prolong the stability of your patio and your foundation. Follow these directions to incorporate patio slope for drainage into your new patio.
Determine Where You Want Your Patio
If your patio will be laid in contact with the basement wall, be sure to construct it with a slope of ½ inch to every nine linear feet that it extends from the wall. This will suffice to help your patio drain off precipitation. In areas where the ground freezes deeply, it will also prevent frost heaving the patio stones in the spring. If you want the patio more than 3 feet away from the house, study the existing grade of the lawn.

When To Build A Concrete Patio
You can pour concrete within a fairly wide temperature range, but for beginners it’s best to wait for dry, warm weather. Rain can ruin a concrete finish, and freezing temperatures can ruin an entire concrete slab. To slow the curing process in very hot, dry weather, use a shade to keep the concrete out of direct sunlight, and mist the concrete with water as needed to prevent premature curing, which weakens the finished product.

How Does The Subgrade/base Affect Slab Design
We go to all this effort to get the proper soil support system and what we end up with is a single input value for the slab design. The most commonly used value is the modulus of subgrade reaction, k. This value is not directly related to bearing capacity and k does not tell the designer if there is compressible or expansive soil. What it does is indicate how stiff the subbase/subgrade is over small deflections .
Now let’s look at why we need to know how flexible the subgrade is. To start with it’s important to understand that a slab on ground is designed as “plain” concrete. That means that we do not count on the reinforcing steel to carry any of the load. But wait, you say, there’s steel in the slabmesh and rebars. Yes, but that steel is only there for crack controlto hold any cracks tightly together. It normally does not extend through the jointsat joints we only want to transfer shear forces, not bending moments and certainly not lateral restraint. That’s what the joint is there for in the first place, to allow lateral shrinkage in the slab.
If the subgrade settles under the middle of the slab or at the edges, the unsupported portion can lead to cracks or slab failure.
A poorly compacted subgrade or more load than the slab was designed to carry can result in cracking at joints. Bill Palmer
