Taking Down Your Gazebo
Strangely enough this is almost the same process as for erecting your gazebo but in the reverse order! However, this process, if not done correctly, often results in the most instances of damage because too often people are in a rush to get the gazebo down and packed away and do not think of some important points that must be done. These are:
Make sure you undo the canopy velcro fasteners before you begin collapsing the frame itself. Failure to do this can result in either bent struts or torn holes in the canopy where the velcro fittings are attached.Ensure that all pull pins are extracted from the leg holes before beginning to push the frame together. Only then can each leg be pushed towards the centre until the frame is back to its storage size.Remember that if resistance is felt during this process then probably either of the 2 actions above have not been done properly with the possiblility that damage might result to the frame structure. Once fully collapsed, the frame can then be put away into its storage bag ready for the next time it it used.

Attach The Vertical Closure Strips
Once all of the horizontal closure strips are installed, add the vertical closure strips.
If your roof panels will end at the edge of your pergola frame, line the vertical closure strips along the end between the last raised part of the horizontal strips.
Cut the vertical closure strips to length using tin snips.
Since my pergola roof extends out beyond the frame, I used the vertical closure strips to secure the edges of the panel to the rafters that stuck out.
If youre doing this, make sure you only install the vertical closure strips on rafters that line up with the raised part of the horizontal closure strips.

How To Dismantle Your Gazebo
Since gazebos are meant for recreational purposes as well as ceremonies, it means theyre not permanent structures and shouldnt be left standing for too long. For this reason, its important to know how to take down your gazebo quickly and this isnt complicated as its the same process for erecting it but in reverse order.
First, lift the outer leg out of the ground and remove the height adjuster so you can slowly lower the frame. Do this again and again until the frame is back to its storage size.
Ensure that all pull pins are extracted from the leg holes before pushing the frame together. Only then can each leg be pushed towards the centre until the frame is back to its storage size. Once youve fully collapsed the frame, put in the storage bag against when next you want to set it up but make sure its completely dry before you do so. If its still wet, unload them and dry them out completely before putting them away. If you want to clean it, warm soapy water with a soft scrubbing brush should get the job done.

Installing The Closure Strips
After the purlins were attached, we needed to attach the SunTuf horizontal closure strips. We attached them to the bottom of the purlin on the far edge of the pergola and the center of other purlins with 1 1/4 construction screws.
They are super easy to install because they just snap together at the ends. We just climbed on top of the pergola and made quick work of it.
Under the eave of the house it was a very tight fit. We barely had enough space to add the pergola roof. We had to be a little creative to attach the purlins and horizontal closure strips.
First we attached the horizontal closure strips to the 2×3 boards. When the board ended and we needed to attach another closure strip, we marked where the new strip would start on the next board.
In order to attach the purlin on top of the header, we had to screw up from the header of the pergola into the purlin. We did this by pre-drilling a pilot hole at an angle then securing the purlin with a screw. I added a screw on each side of every cross beam.
Next we attached the vertical closure strips. These go in between the ends of the horizontal closure strips just on the outer edges of the roof.
We needed to add 2×2 boards in between the 2×3 purlins to bring the sides of the pergola up to the same height. These were painted before installing again.
Then it was easy to cut the boards to length and secure with 2 1/2 construction screws. The vertical closure strips were cut to fit and then attached with the 1 1/4 screws.
Always Carry Out A Risk Assessment Before Using Your Gazebo
These are not permanent structures and should be used with this in mind. Whilst we can test our Gazebos for fire and rain our Commercial and Industrial ranges conform to British Standard 7837/1996, and are also fully waterproof but wind is a different story. A test in a wind tunnel gives a steady blast of wind but that is not what happens in the real world. A windy day is about sudden, unpredictable gusts from all directions.
Our advice is that you must carry out a risk assessment on whether the wind is strong enough to lift the gazebo against your anchors. Pegs and guys are only as good as the ground they go into, whereas our HD straps will withstand up to 600KGs per strap. If the item the strap is attached to is firmly set on the ground, then this will make a significant difference to the amount of wind it is safe to leave the structure up in.
If you are caught out in the wind and need to take urgent action, we recommend you first lower the structure to its lowest point and adjust the straps. Closing the sidewalls will also prevent the wind from getting under the canopy and lifting this.
We also recommend that you take down the gazebo in the event that snow is forecast. Even a small amount of snow will add significant weight and could cause damage to both the canopy and frame if snow is allowed to collect on the canopy.
