How To Fix Cracks In Concrete Decks

As the old saying goes, there are two types of concrete decks. One has a crack, and the other will have a crack.

In our work, we have seen more cracks in concrete decks that one could count. Early in the life of a concrete deck, cracks can occur when concrete expands and contracts with weather conditions, and when expansion joints are not well positioned. Cracks in concrete decks and patios can also appear when the soil underneath the concrete slab erodes. This erosion can be the result of settling soil over time, water movement, nearby construction or more. Due to its stiffness, concrete does not flex with the changing ground conditions. If the slab cant carry its own weight in a section, a crack occurs. Expansion joints reduce the likelihood of cracks, but cracks cant be completely avoided in most concrete patios or decks.

Most home and property owners are unhappy with traditional ways to fix cracks: mostly the cracks are patched up with filler material. This material if used correctly may prevent further cracking by keeping water and ice out of the crack. However, further cracking due to soil and gravel shifting underneath cant be prevented by this method. Okay So Youve Removed All The Old Broken Up Mortar From Between Your Flagstones Good Job

Have a sandwich, you deserve it.

But before we get to learning how-to repoint our flagstone patio, you need to clean out them joints, remove any loose mortar that might be remaining and clean out the dust. My usual method is alternating turns with the leaf blower and the hose. Use a broom to pick up any larger bits of old mortar that is still on the patio. Blow out all the dust, then spray it down, then blow it out again. Your mortar will not adhere to dust, so whatever method you use, just be sure to get them joints clean.

Replacing the flagstone joints with new mortar

Okay, so youve removed all the old mortar and gotten them joints nice and clean. Now its time to learn how to repoint a flagstone patio. ***Heres my method:

First thing I do is load up my diamond trowel in my left hand and hold it over the flagstone joint.

Then I take my tuck pointing trowel and slide the mortar off of my diamond trow

And push the mortar down in-between the flagstones.

Really push it down.

Then add more if you need to.

Use the tuck pointing trow to get the cement nice and smooth.

And look at thatyouve just filled in-between you flagstone with new cement! I always believed in you.

But despite the nice dry mortar that I used, theres still a bit of mess to clean up. Ideally, Ill do a quick clean right then and there, while the mortar is fresh.

Restoring An Old Crumbling Flagstone Walkway

Flagstone walkways, steps, and patios need occasional maintenance and repair to renew the cracking mortar caused by repeated freezing and thawing. Once the mortar is cracked, moisture can seep in, and if not properly maintained, continued cracking will occur.

If caught in time, repairing hairline cracks is not difficult. Unfortunately ours was neglected for years and needed more than a small repair. We needed a complete overhaul of our walkway, definitely a big job.

After considering various options, we decided to restore the walkway. The process will entail removing all the flagstone and mortar, digging up the concrete, laying new concrete, and setting the flagstone in cement.

Is this the most economical option? Yes and No. We consider this a long term economical solution. By reusing the existing stone and digging up the old concrete, we expect to get another 13 15 years use without major issues. The cheaper alternative to just replace the mortar will last only a few years maybe a good short term solution if you are planning to sell your home?

As you can see in some areas of the walkway, the flagstone has completely separated from the mortar.

The mortar has crumbled so badly, the stones are loose and no longer connected to the cement base.

Some areas of the walkway are in fair condition but over time will separate too, if not repaired now.

The process begins by removing the flagstones and the mortar.

Fresh cement is mixed and laid down under each stone.

Do It Repair A Flagstone Walkway

To replace missing stones, youll need stones of similar size and thickness to what already exists. You may have to do some chipping to make the new pieces fit the voids. Do this slowly and whittle away from the edge so you dont remove too much material.

Once the stones are dry fit, youre ready to mix up the mortar. Were using a pre-mixed mortar that only requires the addition of water. Remove the stones and apply some mortar each location. Then replace the stones, pressing them into the mortar.

To replace missing mortar around the existing stones, mix the mortar a little thinner so it runs into the cracks when applied to the joints. As the mortar begins to dry, youll want to clean it off the face of the stones using a mason brush or a sponge along with a light spray from a garden hose.

When the mortar is completely dry, clean the entire surface with a masonry or stone cleaning solution. This is necessary to prepare it for the application of a sealer.

Applying the sealer will protect the stones and the mortar so that the walkway remains safe and attractive for a long time.

Remove The Broken Paver

You will have to replace any broken paver rather than attempt to repair it. Use a hammer and chisel to break up the mortar around the broken stone paver. A special chisel designed for working with stone will yield the best results. Try to avoid causing damage to the other stones. To lower this risk, hold the chisel at an angle towards the damaged stone and gently hammer it into the mortar, breaking it apart.

Get rid of the broken up mortar. Use the hammer to break the damaged stone up into more manageable pieces. Again, be careful not to damage neighboring stones. Hammer gently in the middle of the stone you want to remove until it cracks in various places, separating into smaller sections.

Remove the bits of stone. Use the hammer and chisel again to get rid of any remaining mortar around the space and mortar that was beneath the stone.

How Long Do Concrete Patios And Walkways Last

You can expect to get 25 to 50 years out of a patio or walkway. This depends largely on the quality of the concrete, the workmanship, and your climate. Colder climates, where thawing and freezing happen throughout the winter, tend to break up concrete much faster. Ice-melting chemicals tend to destroy concrete and brick quickly.

Add The Solid Crack Filler

Assess the depth of the crack. If the crack is deeper than 1/4-inch, fill in the necessary sections to bring it up to a 1/4-inch depth. It is not desirable to use the liquid crack filler for deep areas as this extends curing time, can result in sinking filler, and adds to the overall cost of the project.

One way to add solid filler is to dispense clean sand by hand through a funnel. One hand holds the funnel, while the other hand holds a small amount of sand and slowly drops it into the funnel. This method has the advantage of being very inexpensive and allowing you to vary the height of the crack filler as you go.

Another option is to force a closed-cell backer rod into the crack. Three-quarter-inch backer rod is designed to fit into 1/2-inch cracks. Force the backer rod into the crack as much as you can with your fingers. Cut off the backer rod when you reach higher areas that do not need filler. If you reach sections where it is difficult to press the rod with your fingers, use a blunt tool such as a paint stirring stick, since sharper tools like screwdrivers may pierce the rod. Make sure that the backer rod is firmly in place before proceeding to the next step.
