Window Treatment Ideas for Sliding Glass Doors

It can be difficult to choose a window treatment that will work with a sliding door. You dont want it to interfere with the doors functionality. Tiebacks can be used to tie curtains to your sliding door. This will allow you to keep the door functional. Roman shades or valances should be mounted high enough to prevent the hem from catching on heads. Curtain panels should be hung at least an inch above the floor so they can be easily opened and closed. This will keep them from getting damaged by foot traffic.

Of all the windows in homes that I have decorated, the large patio door opening is one of my favorites. These windows can be large, anywhere between 6 to 9 feet, and because of their size can be really challenging to cover with some type of window treatment. The challenge is what makes patio doors so rewarding to design and decorate.

There are so many factors to think about when I look at this space the perfect window covering for you is almost certainly not the same as the perfect window covering from your neighbor. So how do you know what is the perfect window treatment?

If you hire a window treatment designer like me, I will walk with you through the process and customize the perfect window treatment to fit your lifestyle and needs. Do you have small children and need something without pulleys or strings? Is the afternoon sun blinding your familys sit-down dinner? Are you interesting in something that will give you privacy, but also bring color and softness to your space?

In the past, I have used many different materials to accomplish my clients desired result. I have used fabric, woven woods, and even solar screen shades. We can use vertical blinds to provide some privacy, and even use removable wrappings that you can take off and clean in your own washer and dryer.

A more contemporary option is a roller shade, it give desired privacy and can also provide unique texture and style.

Blinds with slats do not offer blackout light reduction like shades do, but they are an economical way to control light levels and provide privacy. Blinds provide a trade-off between lightweight construction and durability.

Mini-blinds for Sliding Glass Doors

Aluminum Mini-blinds are a quick and economical way to get some privacy and light control for your sliding glass doors, but they might not hold up well for pet owners.

Wooden Blinds for Sliding Glass Doors

Stronger wooden slats will last longer but they take more effort to raise and lower since they are heavier. Wooden blinds are often more expensive than other types of blinds.

Specialty Sliding Door Window Treatments

What window coverings do you put in sliding glass doors?!?!?!

All of the sliding door window treatments mentioned offer light and privacy control as well as energy benefits. For ease of maintenance, there are also window treatments that are part of the sliding door itself. Sandwiched between the panes of glass, narrow blinds or cellular shades raise and lower and tilt at the flip of a switch. Because they are sealed into the door, they typically won’t get dirty, break, tear, or need dusting. Another device for light control and energy savings is to add a glare-controlling window film to the sliding door’s glass. This can be done in conjunction with another decorative dressing, orâif you don’t get direct light and have no privacy concernsâit can be the only sliding-door treatment.

Double Up Window Treatments

To cover the broad expanse of sliding doors, look for long, sturdy rods at home centers, and mount the brackets across the top of the doors at even intervals. Be sure to screw them into wall studs for stability. Then hang curtains using easy-slide rings or a cord system that lets you draw them open and closed from one side. If you buy a rod that is longer than your door is wide, you’ll have room to push the curtains completely off to the side, to leave the door fully uncovered.

If your sliding door receives harsh light, you might want to purchase lined curtains, which will block the sun’s rays. For a less-than-perfect outdoor view, install a double set of curtains, and use filtering sheers under solid panels. For a finishing touch, cover the top of the curtains and rod with a valance or cornice mounted high enough to clear the door.

Wood Shutters Or Shades

Window shutters are perhaps one of the most timeless types of window treatments. Shutters began to gain popularity after being brought over from Spain. They became a sought-after window covering for homes, thanks to their unique ability to keep out sunlight and heat. Now, shutters are one of the most popular window treatment options throughout the United States and Canada. Shutters add an element of timelessness, not to mention aesthetic beauty and incredible functionality. Many people even refer to shutters as “furniture” for your windows.

Wood shutters are mounted securely on the non-glass part of the door. They can have a cut out to provide full movement of the lever or door knob. Unlike blinds and shades, shutters won’t rattle or sway when the door is opened and closed. They also provide excellent light control and energy efficiency.

Wood is perfect for homeowners who prefer an authentic, traditional look. Since natural wood allows for unique color variations, it creates a stunning appearance that complements the look of different home styles. Additionally, natural wood adds warmth to your home’s exterior that other materials do not.

Wood shutters come in many different shades. Choose from a wide selection of colors to find the best match for your current exterior. Alternatively, you can also match your interior trim for a cohesive look. For a more rustic look, consider a stain that brings out the wood’s natural grain.

Functionality Of The Room

Because there are a wide variety of window treatment options for patio doors, it is important to think about the functionality of the room when making your decision. Is this a high-traffic area that might be prone to dirt and dust? Long curtains might not work best here. Does your room not get a lot of natural light? You might want to shy away from room darkening shades or dark color fabrics. Is your space commonly used as a playroom for kids or pets? Blinds and shades with cords might not be the safest option. Additionally, for kidsâ bedrooms, consider room-darkening shades. They help create a dark environment for peaceful naptimes.

Custom Vertical Cell Shades | Window Treatment Ideas

Like vertical blinds, track shutters have louvers that can be tilted for adjustable light control. When customizing your shutters, choose from two louvers sizes. The larger your louvers, the clearer your view out will be when theyre open. Please note that shutter louvers must be closed before sliding panels back and forth.

Because these shutters are made with PVC, they are great for high traffic areas and can be wiped down with soapy water to remove dirt. This material also wont warp in hot humid spaces. Theyre the perfect choice for a beach house where you may want to let sea breezes flow through while the louvers block some sun.

When choosing window treatments, there are several vital considerations that will help determine which sliding door window treatment is best for your space and will fit in with the overall feel of your home. The benefits of slider doors make choosing the perfect window treatment for sliding doors a potentially tricky process.

Here are some tips to remember to help you choose the right window treatment for your sliding glass door.

1. Match your Existing Window Treatments

First, if your sliding glass patio doors are in the same room with other windows, then be sure to coordinate your window treatments. It will look best if all your window treatment match.

2. Open in the Same Direction as the Door

Next, I always recommend that your window treatments operate in the same direction as your sliding glass doors. Meaning that if your door opens from left to right, then your curtains should also open that way. This obviously depends on the type of treatment you choose and rules are meant to be broken.

3. Think About Durability

The last tip, sliding glass doors are usually highly-traveled areas. So youll want to choose window treatments that will stand up over time. Dont buy some cheap hanging plastic blinds, they easily crack and break with daily use of the sliding doors.

4. Think about Light Control

5. Think about Easy Access

6. Think about your View versus your Privacy

# Vertical Blind Alternatives

For the rooms with both windows and sliding glass doors, an alternative to vertical blinds is the woven wood sliding panel track blinds. These sliding panels are light-filtering, eco-friendly options that add a simple style to your rooms. Sliding panels are a modern alternative that looks clean and is easy to operate, and can easily be moved out of the way when operating your sliding door. Another alternative is Vertical Cellular Shades, which are made of honeycomb style material that is excellent for insulation and energy efficiency. As sliding doors are often a large window to the outside, they can let in a lot of heat or cold from the outside. Vertical cellulars are a great option that is functional, looks great, and improves the insulation of your room.

Operation Of The Door

It is best to choose a window treatment that operates similar to the door. Sliding vertical blinds or curtains work best with a sliding patio door, as they slide open back and forth in the same fashion as the door. Integrated blinds and shades are a great option for hinged patio doors, but valances would restrict the door from opening.
