Step : Mark Your Fire Pit Seating Area And Path

How to Build Your Square Dakota Stone Fire Pit with Vertical Stack | Step-by-Step Guide

Usually, fire pit seating areas have a path that leads to and from. Not always, unless youre just creating a circle fire pit seating around the fire pit. But if youve got a patio or deck, you may want to create a walkway leading to the fire pit seating area.

The biggest challenge will be: KEEPING IT STRAIGHT! You dont want any wonky walkway that looks like a novice DIYers got their hands on it.

I love walkways that have some curve to them when the fire pit seating area is off-set. In my case, the fire pit was directly in front of the patio, so there was no need to get all fancy. I just needed a straight walkway leading to the fire pit seating area. To keep it straight, I simply used a board measuring about 36 long as a gauge of how wide my fire pit walkway would be.

Last year when I put in the fire pit by itself with no defined walkway or seating area, I simply set the stones in place and dug around the stones to mark where the fire pit was going to be placed. I used a shovel along the edges to mark the grass where the stones would be sitting.

How Big Should I Make A Firepit

You can make a firepit as big as you want, but they’re most commonly between 36 and 48 inches, inner diameter. That size provides plenty of space for a decent fire while keeping everyone close enough to enjoy each other’s company. How big you build your firepit depends on how many people you plan to entertain, how much space you have, and what the regulations are in your area.

Step 1: Add Stone Planters

The Pavestone Rumblestone bricks that I used actually come in a bunch of kits, including fire pits, planters, and even benches. I had ordered two bench kits but changed my mind on using them as bench kits. Instead, I decided to use them as low planters!

I could have stacked them a little higher but knowing my children, they would have stood on them if they were any taller . Keeping them low to the ground makes them less attractive to my sons.

I still them with soil and pretty flowers. Typically these bricks would be glued together just as I used construction adhesive for the DIY fire pit. However, since they were low to the ground, I didnt find them to be a falling hazard. Plus, if I ever want to reconfigure them into another arrangement, I wanted to be able to easily move and reposition them.

First Layer Of Stones

Next we added the first layer of stones for our DIY stone fire pit.

We had to do some adjusting to the outside of the circle to get the stones to fit snuggly. This meant digging the circle out a little farther in a few places.

Once the circle is complete use a long level to make sure the pavers are level. Adjust the depth of the pavers as needed until the circle is level. We checked for level at several spots and adjusted until all of the pavers were the same height.

Above Ground Firepit Price

An above-ground unit that does not need assembly is often less expensive than models that do. These products are often portable, easy to set up, and far less sturdy than assembly-required structures.

Some products are as simple as a metal bowl on legs, costing around $60 or $70. Others may have the look of a built-in firepit and can cost a few hundred dollars. These units are typically available at home improvement centers.

Step : Add Paver Sand Tamper And Check For Level

STONE FIRE PIT BUILD DIY (Mike Haduck)

Using paver sand under a fire pit helps to level the ground and provide some stability for the bricks. I did use paver sand under the fire pit when I built it last summer. I added about 1.5 to 2 of paver sand..tossed some water on it to help make it compact..and then tampered it.

You cant tamper more than about 2 at a time, so after that was tampered down, I added the second bag of paver sand with some water on top, and tampered again.

My yard is a bit sloped. I didnt realize it until after I was 2 layers into it and realizedoh, crapmy fire pit is about 1 sloped on one side!

So unless you want a crooked fire pit like mine, make sure you check the level of the paver sand before adding your fire pit bricks!

Now, one thing I did do was check that every two bricks lined up together was level. Otherwise, when the next layer was stacked on top, it would rock back and forth.

I dont mind a fire pit that slopes a bit, but rocking bricks?? Huh uh. That aint gonna work. This thing needed to at least be steady! So I made some small adjustments and that seemed to help, including using a rubber mallet to help adjust them.

When I build the DIY fire pit last summer, after adding the paver sand, I checked the bricks for level.

However, if I were lining this entire walkway with pavers, I would definitely use paver sand to keep them solidly in place.

Brick Paver Or Fire Brick

A brick paver or fire brick structure costs about $280. Bricks can crack from intense heat, so fire bricks need to line the inside of the ring. Standard pavers can line the outside of the unit. With this design, your firepit can withstand the heat of firewood, charcoal, or gas-burning systems. Homeowners appreciate this material is attractive and continues to radiate heat well after the fire has died.

Step : Add Weed Block Fabric To The Fire Pit Seating Area

If youre putting in a walkway and seating area around your DIY fire pit, then youll want to use a weed block fabric to deter weeds. But just so you know, this wont entirely stop weeds! Youll still get some weeds that will grow in your fire pit seating area, so there will definitely be some maintenance and weed-killing each season!

Depending on the size of your fire pit seating area, be sure to get a roll that will cover the entire area.

I stretched several pieces out over the entire area. Since my fire pit was already built last summer, I worked around it. If youre putting in a fire pit at the same time as the seating area, you can still just work around the area where your fire pit bricks will be. You wont need to put weed block fabric under the fire pit directly. NOTE: Keep in mind that weed block fabric really only prevents weeds from growing up. It does nothing for preventing weed seeds from settling on the gravel and growing on top of the gravel. Essentially, youll still need to do some de-weeding during the spring and summer, into the fall.

Third Consider A Liner

Fire Tables & Fire Pits

Fire pit liners have several benefits that are worth considering. The first big one is that it prevents underground root fires and adds support to fire pits if you want it to be permanent.

Liners are also reasonably priced and last for a long time. Makes sense since the material is usually stone or steel of some kind and will help protect surfaces like patios.

Material that is able to withstand very high temperatures without much issue. For additional coverage for your firepit, you can consider utilizing a firepit ring.

Yard Area Placement And Prep

Preparation is necessary for placement in the middle of the yard. Things to consider:

  • Location of nearby trees. No overhanging branches.

  • Presence of dry brush. Cleared of brush to prevent the spread of fire to other parts of the yard.

  • Slope. Yard must be level where the unit will sit

  • Drainage. Use this in a part of the yard where water pools or creates puddles to avoid sitting the bricks in excess moisture

Some save money on patio installation costs. Those who want to cook on their patio may benefit from investing in an outdoor kitchen installation rather than a firepit.

Custom Built Vs Kits Vs Above

Custom-built units are the most expensive but most popular, offer the best resale value, and give you a permanent, custom structure you can enjoy for years. Prefab units are less costly but often less sturdy. They tend to be more budget-friendly and high-end models come in the form of a fire table rather than a barrel-like firepit.

How To Build A Diy Stone Fire Pit

First, youll need to go shopping for supplies for to build your DIY stone fire pit.

We picked up everything at a local home improvement store. We werent sure how many stone pavers we would need for this project, so we laid out a circle of pavers right in the aisle of the store. Once we had a set up that we liked, we counted our pavers and started adding them to the cart.

We also purchased concrete adhesive to use between the layers of stones. The concrete adhesive comes in a few different colors so you can choose one that matches your stones.

I cant tell you how long Id been wanting to build a DIY fire pit in my backyard, with a stone walkway. Now, in 2021, when the safest place to see friends and family is outdoors, a fire pit is one of the best solutions for cold spring, fall, and winter small get togethers.

One summer, I built this outdoor DIY fire pit in my backyard, which was a labor of love for my middle son and me . It looked great and served its purpose for roasted marshmallows for my family.

Buuut.like any great outdoor project, what started out looking fabulous, within a year, it was quite broken-down and neglected. Its inevitable: the sun fades thingsthe trees shed their gunkand the weeds take root. My yard was a mess.

And whats worse is that the amazing fire pit simply looked like a floating tire in my yard when viewed from my sons bedroom window. There was nothing anchoring it to the yard. It needed a home, for sure .

Fourth Look At Material

While most people think a fire pit needs wood, you are right to some extent.

There are all kinds of different materials in terms of wood, but there are other considerations as well.

For example, you can put in lava rocks into fire pits without any issues so long as theyre not wet.

In terms of wood, you want to avoid any kind of construction wood like plywood or chemically treated wood since those chemicals will become airborne and youll be breathing that in.

Youre better off going with hardwood or fire starters or logs. Softwoods will create excess fumes which arent ideal.

Can I Put A Fire Pit On My Wood Deck

You likely can, but please take a few precautions first. Your local building codes may specify how close the pit can be to the decking, but you should always place the fire pit atop stones or a slab like you would on grass. The fire pit base should extend 18 inches beyond the edges of the fire pit in every direction. In addition, you’ll want to keep the same 10-foot safety zone around all sides of your fire pit on your wood deck.
