Campus Lawns Will Survive Not Thrive

The University of Utahs lawns have a new lookand it comes with a purpose.

Green grass is giving way to a brownish-yellow hue as the U plays its part to conserve water amidst our current severe drought. This shift in the appearance of campus is an intentional change, with limited water being prioritized away from grass and towards trees, shrubs and planters.

Information released by the U.S. Drought Monitor places 98% of the state of Utah as experiencing extreme or exceptional drought conditions . A trio of executive orders from Gov. Spencer J. Cox has been issued to restrict water usage in the spirit of conservancy.

In accordance with these statewide and city mandates, the universitys watering windows have been reduced to twice per week in each area. Programmed watering does not happen before 8 p.m. or after 10 a.m. A small number of exceptions have been made to allow for the watering necessary to establish the root system in newer landscaping and other sensitive areas on campus.

Water efficiency is a long-term and ongoing focus in the Facilities Management office. The university has seen an 18% drop in total water usage since 2018, which amounts to around 200 million gallons per year. In one of the fastest-growing and driest states in the nation, these savings are especially impactful. Water efficiency is outpacing growth at the U, allowing for resiliency in expansion.

What Type Of Sprinkler Should You Use

What Is the Best Time of Day to Water Grass?

Bar none, an in-ground irrigation system is going to be the best choice, provided its been properly installed and maintained. A good irrigation system ensures even coverage, low-angle and low-volume sprinkler heads that minimize evaporation, and other features that provide a high level of efficiency. Furthermore, because an irrigation system usually has a manufacturer-published flow rate, its relatively easy to calculate the amount of water your soil is getting per session.

If you dont have an irrigation system, your best choice for an established lawn is a pulsating sprinkler. Because it shoots water relatively horizontally at a high velocity, youre likely to get more even coverage, and the water is less susceptible to wind and evaporation.

Oscillating sprinklers are really only optimal for young, recently planted lawns, since the high water pressure of pulsating sprinklers can wash away the seed.

Regardless of the system that you use, we highly recommend that you get a timer that can turn off your hose automatically. They are very cheap, and they ensure you dont accidentally leave the sprinkler on way too long.

Green and lush lawns can be hard to maintain and care for. And when your lawn isnt growing as green or as thick as you would like, it can be hard to know why. Often, the grass might be struggling because its not getting enough water or not getting water at the right time. Or maybe your grass looks fine, but you want to know how long to water turfgrass or the best time of day to water your lawn to help save water. Read on to learn about the most common watering mistakes you might be making with your lawn, the best time to water grass, and how to remedy them to help your lawn grow healthy and strong.

Watering the Right Amount

Many people water too much or too little. How much water does your lawn actually need? You might think that the amount of water each lawn needs varies, but it actually doesnt vary much. Your lawn needs about 1 -1 ½ inches of water each week to grow healthy and strong. More water than that can cause your yard to get saturated, which is one of the leading causes of disease, fungal growth, and soil compaction, all of which can result in unattractive, unhealthy grass. Too little water will dry your grass out and turn it yellow and parched. The key is to try and give your yard about that ideal inch of water each week even during the winter. Watering the lawn is a year-round project.

When the lawn is left unwatered for an extended period of time, the lawn seeks protection from water stress and goes dormant. It therefore stops growing, which causes the appearance of a dark yellowish or brownish color. At this point, the leaves and stems dry out and turn brown, but the underground parts still remain alive.

In general, a well-maintained lawn can survive summer droughts without the need for irrigation. However, after 4 weeks without water, it is very likely that your lawn will take on a yellowish or orange tint, which means that it is seriously dried out and needs urgent watering.

It is much better to water your grass in the early morning, before the sun gets hot and counters your watering efforts with evaporation.

It also means that the grass wont be sitting damp for too long and be at risk of fungal diseases, as when that hot sun does rise, it will dry up any excess moisture that hasnt reached the roots.

To avoid fungus and disease, it is best to let the soil fully dry out between watering sessions, and watering in the morning is the best way of achieving this.

General Lawn Irrigation Advice

Lawn Watering in Arizona

Water when the grass needs it.Most lawns require irrigation once every four to eight days to stay healthy, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In fact, the NRCS says irrigating less often and applying more water when you do irrigate results in deeper rooted plants and healthier turf.

Keep an eye on the sky. When it rains for several days, water less. Successive hot, dry days mean water more. If youre not sure if your lawn needs water, the NRCS recommends this test: If grass doesnt spring back after being stepped on, its probably time to irrigate.

Early morning watering is best. Early watering gives the grass time to absorb the water, sending it down into the roots and into the grass plants themselves. That plumps up the grass blades with water, allowing them to better endure the heat of the day. Avoid watering during the middle of the day when water evaporates quickly. Also avoid watering on a windy day, which will dry up the water before it can be absorbed by the grass.

Although not as good as early morning, late afternoon also can be a good time for watering grass. You should not water in the evening, though, as lingering moisture can lead to fungal diseases in the grass.

During fall, as part of your regular lawn care maintenance, you should prepare your lawn for the coming winter. Per the NRCS, water through mid-September and then again in mid-October to store moisture in the soil.

Is It Ok To Water Grass In Cold Weather

The colder weather does not evaporate moisture from the lawn as quickly as it does in the warmer weather. Most lawn experts recommend watering your grass until the soil or ground temperature reaches the 40-degree Fahrenheit mark. It is true that less water is required when the temperature is below 40 degrees. However, it is important to keep in mind that the colder the weather, the longer it will take for the grass to dry out.

If you have a lawn that has been neglected for a long period of time, you may want to consider replacing it with a new lawn. If you do decide to replace your lawn, be sure to do so in a way that will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the new grass for many years to come.

How Long Do I Run My Sprinklers To Get 1 Inch Of Water

It is ideal to water lawns about one inch of water per week. To determine how long you need to water to get one inch, place a plastic container in your yard and set a timer. On average, it will take 30 minutes to get a half inch of water. So, 20 minutes, three times per week will give a lawn about an inch of water.
