The Bungee Cord Method For Cantilever Umbrellas

If you have a stand-alone, cantilever umbrella that spins, you dont have a ton of options to stop it. However, there is one option that only requires two bungee cords.;

Wrap the first bungee cord around the pole securely. Attach one end of the second cord to the first, and then stretch the other side to the closest umbrella support arm. When youre done, the umbrella will no longer spin because itll be attached to the base pole with the bungee cords.

Be aware, though, that this method can damage your umbrella by putting stress on it. Its up to you to decide if the risk of damage is worth it to stop your cantilever umbrella from spinning.

Patio Umbrella Leans In Base

I just bought a patio umbrella and base from Pottery Barn. Having never had a patio umbrella before, I don’t know if what I have is normal. The patio umbrella is 6′ in diameter, 7.4′ high and is tapered at the end. We bought a 70 lb cast iron base that says it is for all diameter umbrellas but when we put our umbrella in, the base seems too big and the umbrella lens to one side. Is this normal? Do we need to take it back and get something else?

Caveat: Our patio is slightly on a decline so that water drains, and it does lean toward the decline.

If damage occurs to your patio umbrella, it is most like to be either a tear in the fabric along the ribs of the extension mechanism, a hole punched through by accident, or fraying along the edges. The first step in repairing is assessing the damage and assembling the required materials. You will need heavy-duty scissors, heavy-gauge thread that matches your umbrella fabric, fabric glue and heavy objects to weigh down glued fabric. If the fabric has a hole, youll need a piece of compatible material for your patch.

To prepare your umbrella to be repaired first you should remove the umbrella fabric from the ribs by pulling the pockets from the rib end, the remove the finial and slide the cover off of the umbrella frame. Spread the umbrella fabric on a flat surface. Your patio table is often a good surface for this. Clean around the damaged area and remove any dirt or twigs. Using the scissors, snip away loose threads.

Drill And Secure The Base In The Patio

If you are going to use an external base to keep the patio umbrella firmly fixed in position, you might want to consider drilling the base and securing it firmly in the patio. There are certain bases that come with holes and screws already in the package.

These holes can be aligned with the ones on the floor and then secure the base tightly by drilling it in the floor. You can also mount it on a deck if you want.

This not only offers greater safety, but it also offers greater aesthetic appeal. The only downside to using this method is that you will be making holes in the patio floor.

More importantly, in case you want to move the umbrella from one position to another, you will have to unmount the entire thing and then affix it elsewhere. However, most people dont really have to worry about unmounting the umbrella again and again.

If the winds in your area are considerably high, you might want to consider doing this. Not only will it increase the safety of people around you, but it will also give you peace of mind that your umbrella wont fly all over.

Apply A Protective Coating

One of the positive attributes of your thatch patio umbrella is that it utilizes natural materials and design that have been used for centuries to keep people out of the path of rainfall and direct sunlight. Most options today use water reed as the thatching material, which has a limited natural water resistance. However, that doesnt mean to say that it is immune to the effects of the elements. Paint The Canopy Support

The canopy support was a bit weathered so I gave it a couple fresh coats of Krylon CoverMaxx Brushed Metallic paint. If you decide to paint this, make sure to let it cure for plenty of time prior to attempting to raise or lower the arms. Otherwise the paint can will scratch off on the pole area if not properly cured. I would recommend letting it dry for at least 48 hours.;
