How to Measure a Patio Umbrella

  • Open the umbrella so that it is fully extended.
  • Measure the top of your umbrella along one of the rib arms. Use a tape measure to measure from the top center to the outside edge.
  • Multiply that number by two.
  • Take another measurement from the base of the umbrella pole to the crank mechanism.

The Bungee Cord Method For Cantilever Umbrellas

    If you have a stand-alone, cantilever umbrella that spins, you dont have a ton of options to stop it. However, there is one option that only requires two bungee cords.;

Wrap the first bungee cord around the pole securely. Attach one end of the second cord to the first, and then stretch the other side to the closest umbrella support arm. When youre done, the umbrella will no longer spin because itll be attached to the base pole with the bungee cords.

Be aware, though, that this method can damage your umbrella by putting stress on it. Its up to you to decide if the risk of damage is worth it to stop your cantilever umbrella from spinning.

    Patio Umbrella Leans In Base

I just bought a patio umbrella and base from Pottery Barn. Having never had a patio umbrella before, I don’t know if what I have is normal. The patio umbrella is 6′ in diameter, 7.4′ high and is tapered at the end. We bought a 70 lb cast iron base that says it is for all diameter umbrellas but when we put our umbrella in, the base seems too big and the umbrella lens to one side. Is this normal? Do we need to take it back and get something else?

Caveat: Our patio is slightly on a decline so that water drains, and it does lean toward the decline.

It’s not possible for one screw to hold the umbrella in place if there is enough space for movement between the umbrella pole and the base pipe. The fact you have a slope is coming into play since it’s causing the top-heavy umbrella to naturally lean that way. To keep the pole vertical in the base, buy some wood shims and break them so you have pieces small enough to go between the pole and base pipe and place them until the pole is in the vertical position you want. When it’s just like you want, break off the shims so they’re even with the top of the base pipe. You may have to use a utility knife to get a smooth edge on the shims.

If you also want the base level, you can buy some composite shims and put those around the base to make it level but you’ll still need some small wood pieces around the pole to keep it from shifting/leaning.

Repairing A Torn Patio Umbrella Cover

by Kathie Ortiz | May 6, 2014 | Patio Umbrellas

Outdoor patio umbrellas have to put up with a lot of different kinds of weather, and its easy for them to their cover torn. Replacing good patio umbrellas can be costly. Repairing a torn umbrella cover is a much more economical choice.

The best way to repair an outdoor umbrella that has a hole or is suffering from a tear depends on what kind of fabric the umbrella uses for its cover and the severity of the damage. Here are a few guides on repairing you patio umbrella and how to maintain it tear free after.

If damage occurs to your patio umbrella, it is most like to be either a tear in the fabric along the ribs of the extension mechanism, a hole punched through by accident, or fraying along the edges. The first step in repairing is assessing the damage and assembling the required materials. You will need heavy-duty scissors, heavy-gauge thread that matches your umbrella fabric, fabric glue and heavy objects to weigh down glued fabric. If the fabric has a hole, youll need a piece of compatible material for your patch.

To prepare your umbrella to be repaired first you should remove the umbrella fabric from the ribs by pulling the pockets from the rib end, the remove the finial and slide the cover off of the umbrella frame. Spread the umbrella fabric on a flat surface. Your patio table is often a good surface for this. Clean around the damaged area and remove any dirt or twigs. Using the scissors, snip away loose threads.

Drill And Secure The Base In The Patio

    9

If you are going to use an external base to keep the patio umbrella firmly fixed in position, you might want to consider drilling the base and securing it firmly in the patio. There are certain bases that come with holes and screws already in the package.

These holes can be aligned with the ones on the floor and then secure the base tightly by drilling it in the floor. You can also mount it on a deck if you want.

This not only offers greater safety, but it also offers greater aesthetic appeal. The only downside to using this method is that you will be making holes in the patio floor.

More importantly, in case you want to move the umbrella from one position to another, you will have to unmount the entire thing and then affix it elsewhere. However, most people dont really have to worry about unmounting the umbrella again and again.

If the winds in your area are considerably high, you might want to consider doing this. Not only will it increase the safety of people around you, but it will also give you peace of mind that your umbrella wont fly all over.

    Apply A Protective Coating

One of the positive attributes of your thatch patio umbrella is that it utilizes natural materials and design that have been used for centuries to keep people out of the path of rainfall and direct sunlight. Most options today use water reed as the thatching material, which has a limited natural water resistance. However, that doesnt mean to say that it is immune to the effects of the elements. The design of thatching can mean that your umbrella may hold moisture in humid climates, or retain rain during particularly wet periods, meaning that its susceptible to rot, moss, and mold. One of the other key risks is that natural thatch is flammable. Once a year, its important that you apply a waterproof sealant and fire retardant coating. These are often separate products, but there are combination versions that protect from fire, water, mold, and algae on the market these can retail around $90 for a gallon. If your umbrella is constructed from synthetic thatch materials, such as PVC, you generally dont need to apply protection, as these have natural water and mold-repellent properties. Many are also coated in UV resistant spray to prevent fading in the sunlight.

    Umbrella Base And Base Weights

    Keeping any kind of umbrella from falling over essentially comes down to weight in or on the base. If you have a lightweight base, you can always add weight to it.;

For an excellent, heavy-duty base to keep your umbrella upright, I recommend the Best Choice Products Umbrella Stand. It weighs 81 pounds but also comes equipped with wheels to make moving it fairly easy. It works for umbrella poles up to 2 inches in diameter.

    Paint The Canopy Support

How to Fix Patio Umbrella Ribs

    The canopy support was a bit weathered so I gave it a couple fresh coats of Krylon CoverMaxx Brushed Metallic paint. If you decide to paint this, make sure to let it cure for plenty of time prior to attempting to raise or lower the arms. Otherwise the paint can will scratch off on the pole area if not properly cured. I would recommend letting it dry for at least 48 hours.;

    Keep The Unused Umbrella Closed

Its a wise idea to keep your patio umbrella closed when youre not using them. Doing such, you can reduce the risks of damage caused by a falling umbrella. You should firmly tie the cord around the umbrella fabric so that it wont open when the wind blows.

Many patio umbrellas come with a velcro strap, and some come with a separate cover. If your patio umbrella comes with a cover, use that often and keep the umbrella-covered while not in use.

How To Replace A Patio Umbrella Canopy

As I gaze at my backyard, my patio doesnt look as good as it did the last season. Looks jadedactually faded. While the rest of the furniture has retained its look, the canopy is sticking out like a sore thumb. Summer is approaching, and I see us using the outdoors much more, having hunkered down this unusually harsh winter.

It is that umbrella canopy. I had selected the set with such care. Fiberglass ribs, sturdy base and all. Looks like the vendor did not give me the right grade of fabric for the canopy. Anyway, I think Ill just go ahead and replace my patio umbrella canopy. My neighbor did that last summer, and I had walked across to see how he went about it. Like him, Id instead do a canopy replacement having put down $300 plus just last season for the full patio umbrella set. It doesnt hurt to refurbish.

The act of umbrella canopy cover replacement is not that complicated. On a still, clear day crank your umbrella down and tie a cord around it so that it is easier to handle. Now remove the pole from its mooring and carry the umbrella set over to a suitable table. Lay it down and proceed to unscrew the ferrule ;from the top. This will enable taking the canopy off the final hole once you have unhitched it from the ribs.

    Dont Use Plastic Joints

When choosing a patio umbrella, choose options that come with steel or aluminum joints. If the joints are made from plastic, you can bet that they will not last for a long time. Apart from impacts, these might suffer failure due to high temperatures, rain, and winds. And when the joints are weakened, its only a matter of time before the entire structure collapses.

Fixing a broken patio umbrella frame

I am afraid this is quite a complicated process. You will need a big dose of perseverance, along with standard nose-pliers, a screwdriver set, and nylon cord of the required thickness and length. The steps:

  • Having taken the umbrella down, untie and remove the fabric from the ribs
  • Remove the crank handle housing, using the screwdriver
  • Now look for the Cotter pin, straighten it out and remove it using the nose pliers
  • Unscrew the hub that holds all the ribs in
  • Now get to the broken cord and pull it out
  • Insert the new rope and take it all the way up to the pulley at the top of the umbrella, and right back through the umbrella shaft
  • Thread it through the eyelet in the crank handle. Knot it, so it doesnt slip through
  • Reassemble the crank handle. You are now ready to fix the canopy to crank up the umbrella

Here Are A Few Techniques That You Can Obtain To Strengthen The Base

DIY Sandbags: This is an easy and inexpensive solution to add weight to your umbrella base. Theyre easy to make and easy to install, and doesnt cost much either, but highly functional to beef up the base. Add a few to your default base to give it additional strength.

Supplemental Weight Bags: If your umbrella is more than 9 inches in diameter, you may try using a supplemental weight bag. Its a better way of adding add-on weight to your base, and they can add up to a hundred pounds of weight.

Use Gravel to Add Weight: An easy yet effective way to add weight to your base is to fill a bucket with colorful gravels and insert the pole into that. It will not only add weight to the base but also create an excellent look.

The Cinder Block Method: This is another inexpensive yet effective way to add extra weight to the base. Paint a cinder block, then slide it under the base and afterward insert the pole into the hole of the block.

Lead Bags: Tube-shaped lead boxes are small yet heavy, and they are useful in adding extra weight to the base. Use a few of them to beef-up your base.

Go For a Cantilever Umbrella Base: Cantilever umbrellas need much more weight due to their design, thus their bases are made to compliment that. You can go for a cantilever umbrella base even if you dont have one of those umbrellas. This base gives much better stability. However, theyre a little expensive as well.
