Spring Weather Can Be Very Unpredictable So I Am Sharing My Best Tips For Protecting Your Outdoor Cushions

As I sit here writing this blog post I’m listening to the sound of the rain pouring down. Hard.

Spring is like that around here. Lots of beautiful hot sunny days punctuated with hard rains. You never quite know what to wear so layering is a must.

And you never quite know when it is really safe to bring out the patio cushions.

Our deck is completely open to the elements – it faces south and gets hot, hot sun beating down on it all day long when it’s nice out. And pouring rain and wind when it’s not-so-nice outside.

Which makes the whole upholstered furniture thing a little bit tricky. We tuck our cushions under the roof overhang as much as possible but they still tend to get a lot of exposure to the elements.

So today I have a tip for you about one thing I do to help protect our outdoor deck cushions so that they will last for years , despite all the sun and rain they face.

This is not in any way a sponsored post, I just wanted to share about something that I have found useful for helping to protect my outdoor cushions from both the weather and direct sunlight.

A spray on outdoor fabric seal designed for upholstery that gives extra protection from both the rain and the hot sunshine and UV rays.

Awesome, right?

All you have to do is follow the directions to apply…

Even though most of my couch cushions are already outdoor rated fabric, it helps to have that little extra level of water seal to them.

Think you might give it a try? Save it to remember it…

For Removing Cat Hair From Fabric Including Carpet Upholstered Furniture Clothes Bedding Or Car Interiors:

  • Drape your feline’s favorite lounge spot in removable fabric. Cover up upholstered areas where your cat likes to luxuriate with blankets or towels — or something fancier if you’d prefer! While this technique is admittedly not the most aesthetically appealing, there’s a reason that everyone does it. You can simply toss that blanket or towel straight into the washer every few days, easily managing cat hair build-up.
  • Get creative with your hair removal techniques. Dryer sheets , pumice stones, lint rollers, and duct tape all work wonders for removing hair from various fabric surfaces. Dryer sheets are great for carpet and furniture, pumice stones on carpet, and lint rollers or duct tape on, well, just about anything.
  • Suck it up, buttercup. Vacuuming regularly obviously helps with cat hair. But here’s another trick! Try using a spray bottle to lightly mist your carpet with water, then use a broom to sweep up clumps of cat hair before running the vacuum. If you’re worried about carpet odor from cat hair, sprinkle some baking soda onto the carpet after sweeping but before vacuuming.
  • Switch up your route. Try vacuuming cat hair in alternating directions for the most effective results .

How To Get Cat Pee Smell Out Of Couch With Baking Soda And Hydrogen Peroxide

11 Fast Ways to Remove Pet Hair Off a Couch

  • 16 oz. bottle hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap
  • 1 Tbsp. baking soda

Empty plastic bottle to put the solution in once it is mixed up.An ultraviolet black light

Directions:

  • Using any plastic container mix the Hydrogen Peroxide, dish liquid, and baking soda well using a plastic spoon. If you have a large area or more than one area to clean you may want to use a bigger bowl and mix enough solution according to your needs.
  • Once it is mixed put it into your empty plastic bottle. Always discard the unused portion because the oxygen in the peroxide mixed with these other items can make it explode.
  • You have to find all the old stains and odors because they give off an odor to your dog or cat that has them coming back to do their business in the same places.
  • If you have a black light shut off all the lights in your home and turn on the blacklight. The urine in the carpet or on the furniture will glow. I did not believe this until I tried it and it really works and let me tell you I could not believe all the urine spots on my carpet. There were places I hadn’t even realized my cat could get to.
  • Once you find the urine spots, then pour the solution evenly on the whole spot, making sure to saturate the carpet and padding under the carpet.

How To Clean Canvas Patio Furniture And Pillows So They Look Brand New

And even remove stubborn mildew stains.

The weather was finally nice enough to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the patio, but then I took a look at the fabric cushions on my furniture. They were dusty, dingy, and had some muddy paw prints and the droppings of errant birds. Luckily for me, cleanup required just a few supplies, a bit of elbow grease, and a breeze to dry the fabric before I could settle down for a glass of iced tea and a good book. Follow these steps to clean your canvas patio furniture and pillows so they’re ready for the relaxing warm-weather evenings ahead.

Note: If the covers on your pillows and cushions are removable, cleaning is even easier. How To Wash Outdoor Cushions In A Washing Machine Few Things To Note

Now for some folks, washing machines are the next best inventions after coffee. And it’s not hard to see why.

They offer a great deal of convenience, especially when it comes to washing items like jeans, blankets and well, outdoor cushions.

Using a washing machine can save you all the stress of connecting a garden hose to wash your cushion, or adopting pressure washing and the likes.

    • That said, not all outdoor cushions can be washed in a washing machine. In most cases, size is the limiting factor.

For smaller outdoor cushions, the ones that can almost pass as medium to large pillows, they will be fine in the washing machine. The larger ones will just have to be washed by hands.

    • The fabric also comes into play. If your pillow is made from microfiber, polyester and shredded foam, then it should survive the rigors of the washing machine.

For other materials, pay attention to the laundry directions on the tag of the cushion if there is any.

In fact, for all cushions look out for this tag to check that your cushion is machine wash friendly.

Now, let’s get down to business and see how to go about washing your outdoor cushion with a washing machine.

How To Remove Pet Urine Smell From Couch With Vinegar And Baking Soda

Here’s a great recipe for cleaning and permanently removing cat urine, other pet stains, and odors:

Start by first cleaning the area with a vinegar-water solution: Use 2-3 parts water mixed with 1 part vinegar. It’s easiest to put this mixture in a well-marked spray bottle. Clean and blot, with a white towel or white rag.

*A side note: Never use ammonia to clean up cat or dog urine, because cats and dogs will be attracted right back to that same spot to go again. Since all urine is so strong in ammonia, this “fools” the pets’ noses.

Next, I used an enzymatic cleaner to saturated the area, used the attachments from the carpet cleaner, and sprayed the area again. Have no pee smell and no stains.

The second day: Repeat the application enzyme cleaner product and re-cover with plastic.

The third day: Pour plain old drugstore hydrogen peroxide on the area and let it fizz and bubble up anything that’s left. Do this and I can bet your pet urine smell will disappear. Be careful to pre-test the carpet in a discreet area before using the hydrogen peroxide, just to make sure the carpet won’t fade.

I’ve used peroxide many, many times to clean spots on my carpet and upholstery and it’s never hurt my carpet, upholstery, or any clothes fabric. Peroxide works to remove any organic stain. Peroxide will also remove blood, coffee, and hot chocolate. Peroxide is a totally amazing stain remover. It works by using oxygen to “fizz out” the stain. Simple, but effective.

Block Passage Beneath Decks Gazebos Sheds And Other Structures

One of the most popular places for rats to make a home is underneath a structure that never moves. This could be your wood deck, a gazebo, your garden shed, ornamental bridges, doghouses or other structures. If that structure is also near another structure, that provides even more space for them to live, hide or move around your yard. For example, if your doghouses are against the exterior of your house or fence, this provides additional space for your rats to thrive.

If possible, move gazebos and sheds away from other structures so that there are several feet of open space on all sides. Next, you need to block entry to areas beneath your deck or other structures in your yard that could provide shelter to rats. You need to completely block access, because even the narrowest spaces can allow entry. Rats do not like the smell of cedar, so you might consider using cedar to block the perimeter of your deck, shed or gazebo.

Alternatively, you could use rocks, but you may need to also use mortar to fill any spaces in between. Another option is to pull out that roll of hardware cloth you purchased for the above steps and wrap it around any openings to block entry. It is best if you dig down at least a few inches so that the wire is buried in the ground and cannot be pushed out of the way by your rats.

How To Remove Stains From Canvas Patio Furniture And Pillows

    • Mildew: While the fabric is dry, brush the surface with a soft-bristled brush to loosen and remove mildew spores. Make a paste of one tablespoon liquid laundry detergent and one teaspoon powdered oxygen bleach and apply it to the mildew stains with a soft-bristled brush. Allow the paste to sit for at least one hour before rinsing.
    • Food and oily stains: Use a dab of heavy-duty laundry detergent on each stained area and work it into the fabric with a soft-bristled brush. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing.
    • Bird droppings: If the dropping is wet, allow it to dry before cleaning. Use the edge of a dull knife or a credit card to lift away any dry solids. Dab the spot with liquid detergent, work it into the stain with a brush, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Add a bit of powdered oxygen bleach to the detergent if the stain is dark from berries the bird ate.
    • Grass: Make a paste of one tablespoon liquid laundry detergent and one teaspoon powdered oxygen bleach and apply it to the stain with a soft-bristled brush. Allow the paste to sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing.

How To Get Urine Smell Out Of The Couch After It Has Dried

  • In a bowl, mix 10 ounces of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of recently opened baking soda , and 2-3 drops of dish-washing detergent. Mix until the baking soda is dissolved.
  • Pour into a spray bottle.
  • Pre-test the upholstery by spraying some cleaner in an inconspicuous place.
  • Allow it to dry. If the fabric does not change color, proceed as follows: Spray the stain and allow the cleaner to work for an hour. If the stain is not gone, repeat the process.
  • After the stain is gone, rinse the cleaning solution from the area by dabbing with a damp cloth and blotting with a dry towel until all cleaning solution is gone. This is an important step because, over time, the detergent residue will attract dirt. Also, if not removed, hydrogen peroxide could bleach the upholstery and weaken the fibers of the fabric.
