How To Get Rid Of Flies Outside Patio

How To Inspect Your Property For Fly Attractants

Flies are gross, plain and simple. Theyre always looking for places to breed, and the dirtier and smellier the better. Adult flies are drawn to areas where they can lay eggs, such as compost piles, farms, roadkill, trash bins, and other areas where they can find organic matter.

Unfortunately, flies have a strong sense to detect odor, so even the smallest of food residue can bring in flies far and wide. If you like to entertain outdoors on your patio, there are more than likely traces of food or sugary residue from juices on the pavement or on your patio furniture. Flies will hone in on the smallest food available ! The patio is now their sweet haven.

When checking for the source of your flies, of course, look for potential food sources as aforementioned, but also try to discover where the flies are laying eggs. In addition to feces and food, flies are also attracted to birdhouses and outdoor lighting. Whether you own your home or rent your home through a local property management company, it is important to inspect your property regularly for flies.

Method 1: Pennies In Glass Of Water

The first method is super-easy it basically involves just putting pennies in a glass of water.

What You Need:

  • Multiple Full Glasses Of Water

How To Use This Fly Trick

Fill up a few large, clear glasses with water. Then, place some pennies at the bottom of the glasses.

Then, place these glasses of water around your table and even among the plates of food. Youll notice fewer flies buzzing around your food and your head!

Make Your Own Fly Strips

If you dont want to go to the store and find these fly strips to hang up around your outdoor area, you can actually make your own and implement essential oils that have natural repellent qualities to them that will keep those flies away.

All you have to do is cut a piece of cloth into strips that are about a foot in length and at least an inch in width. You can cut as many or as few of these strips as you like; it really depends on the size of your patio or outdoor space when you are making them.

When you have cut all of the strips that you will need, you just need to moisten them with a few drops of your favorite essential oil that has repellent qualities. This can be something such as lavender, clove, citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, eucalyptus, or mint.

When you have successfully saturated the strips to your liking, tie them onto the railings and tree branches that surround your patio. If you dont have those things nearby, try hanging them from your roof or any other areas that are accessible to your patio or outdoor space.

The scent should get rid of the flies altogether instead of physically trapping them on the strips. You will be left with pleasant-smelling strips that hang around your outdoor space and they wont have nasty little flies stuck to them.

Summer is finally here! And if you’re anything like me, you want to be able to sit outside and enjoy a nice picnic in the park or a BBQ in your backyard . Keep reading for fifteen simple and useful tips on how to keep flies away outside.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, summer is the absolute best time of year. It’s not raining, the sun is shining, and we try to spend as much time as possible outside. But when the flies are continually lurking, it’s hard to enjoy the beautiful weather over a meal.

Last weekend we sat down for a BBQ dinner on the patio. The table was set, the kids were happy, food was ready. And the view was amazing. What could be better than this? It was so relaxing and peaceful.

Until…bzzzz….bzzz…the flies found us.

Between swatting them away, and unsuccessfully convincing my two year old that it wasn’t a bee…just an annoying fly….dinner went from relaxing to tense and stressful.

Make Your Own Fly Trap

Sure, you can buy fly traps from most home stores, but theyre usually pretty unsightly.

Nothing spoils an appetite more than a hanging sticky trap filled with dead flies out in the open. UV light traps arent much better; nobody wants to smell cooked insects rather than the smell of cooking BBQ foods.

But dont worry, you can easily make your own fly traps to keep flies away from food at an outdoor party with a few things you can normally find in your kitchen cupboard.

  • Take a mason jar or similar container.
  • Add some wine or vinegar.
  • Cover the opening with plastic wrap.
  • Punch through a few holes in the plastic.
  • Flies will smell the liquid and enter, but are unable to escape, leaving you and your guests to enjoy the real food in peace.
  • You dont even need a mason jar for this quick hack. Just take a used soda bottle and youll have your own fly jail in no time. Check out this handy YouTube video I found that shows you how to make your own fly trap:

Method 2: Bag Of Water Trick

The second trick is a lot like the first one, but youll use a bag of water instead of a glass. This is a better idea to use if your picnic table is small or you dont want to risk having extra glasses of water around that might spill.

    What You Need:

How To Use The Bag Trick

Set your resealable plastic food storage bag inside a mason jar. The mason jar will hold the bag in place while you fill it up with water.

Then, fill the bag up 3/4 full with water.

Drop a few pennies in the bottom of the bag.

Seal the bag tightly and spread the pennies out around the inside of the bag.

Finally, hang the bag up around where youll be sitting and eating.

You can hang up just one or a few. Ive heard that the ideal amount of bags that keeps the flies away is about 3 bags.

    Use Camphor To Repel Flies

Camphor is somewhat like a dry waxy, white substance derived from the wood of the Camphor Laurel tree. It has a strong smell that deters flies and other insects. It has been traditionally used in India to purify the surrounding environment as it has strong antibacterial, anti-viral and insect repellent properties. It is commercially available in form of small tablets.

Ways to Use Camphor to Get Rid of Flies

  • Take 2 camphor tablets and place it on a warm surface. You may use your mosquito repellent device or use a heat diffuser or you may simply heat up a metal plate and place the camphor tablets on it. The flies will go away due to the smell has given out by camphor.
  • If you too dont like the strong odor of camphor, just place the camphor tablets close to places where flies frequently come.
  • Take some water, preferably hot water in a bowl or a wide shallow plate. Place 2 tablets of camphor in this water and keep near the flies infested areas.
  • Precaution: Pregnant women should not use camphor as a fly repellent

    My Experience It Works

Glass + Water + Pennies = crazy fly repelling abilities.

It was unreal. Id say it reduced the flies by about 90%. At one point we looked up and the flies were just sitting on the deck railing staring at all the food they couldnt ruin.

    RE-ENACTMENT:

Weve used the fly trick each outdoor meal since. The more glasses full of water, the better the fly repelling ability. The kids think this is the coolest thing ever and have learned not to drink the water with the pennies in it.

Apparently it has something to do with flies thinking the pennies were compound eyes of a much larger bug looking back at them. To us, they just look like coppery decorations that glittered in the sunlight. Theyre so PRETTY! my kids sighed

Make Flypaper Strips At Home To Catch Flies

The market is flooded with flypapers, sometimes also called fly ribbons, a pest control device. These are made of paper coated with a fragrant, sticky and often poisonous substance which traps flies and other flying insects. The poisonous substance used in these flypapers can be toxic to humans and animals too. So why not use homemade fly papers! They are easy to make and work as efficiently as the commercially available flypapers.

    Get this:

    • Thread

    Do this:

    • Cut 2 inch wide strips from the paper or card. Punch a hoe or two at the top of each strip and thread it to make a loop to hang at the places where flies come.
    • Mix the corn syrup and sugar.
    • Coat one side of each strip with the corn-sugar syrup. If the syrup drips, place a bowl underneath the hanging paper.
    • Now hang these strips where you see the flies most. Theyll get attracted to the sugary syrup and when they land on these strips, theyll get stuck to it.

A can be helpful for snagging random flies but there are a few home remedies you can try to catch several of them at once, Pereira says.

Mix apple cider vinegar and dish soap.

Combine equal parts of the two in a small bowl and add a pinch of sugar to the mix. Ideally, the dish soap will have a fruity smell. The fermented smell from the vinegar can attract flies, Pereira says. But the soap is really what will kill them. The detergent in soap will destroy the flies digestive tract and can also break down their cell walls, he says.

    Try fly paper.

This is a that you can easily string up from the ceiling or wherever the flies are hanging out the most. When flies check it out, they get stuck to the paper.

Similarly, you can put eucalyptus oil on hanging paper stripssay, near a windowto repel them, as flies dont like the scent, says board-certified entomologist Frank Meek, Technical Services Manager at Rollins. This will only repel them though, not kill them.

    Create a soda bottle trap.

Use Citrus Peel Or Citrus Oils To Repel House Flies

Many commercial cleaners and bug repellents use citrus oils and kitchen herbs to clean and repel insects naturally. The pleasant smell we enjoy makes an appealing air freshener but is a repellent for house flies.

Use a citrus oil spray in fly-infested areas and clean with citrus cleaners. You can also repel house flies by putting out a bowl of orange or lemon peels. Stir the peels or rub them occasionally to release the oils.

We cover using citrus oils and citronella in our what repels mosquitoes tips in more detail. However, if you have a fruit fly infestation, avoid using citrus oils. Fruit flies are attracted to citrus.

Even though many flies behave similarly, many different fly species may be infecting your patio area. Typically, homeowners tend to experience fungus gnats that adore outdoor plants, fruit flies that just cant get enough of rotting food youve left behind, or the common housefly that just loves all things dirty and smelly.

According to the Amateur Entomologists Society, there are approximately 100,000 known species of flies throughout the world. Even though flies have a short lifespan , females can lay up to 900 eggs during that time. Yikes!

No matter what kind of fly situation youve got on your hands, they are all super annoying. Fortunately, any of these flies can be treated and prevented in similar ways, which involves cleaning and removing food and breeding sources, as well as purchasing fly control products.

    Use Wine To Trap Flies

Now, this is something that wine lovers will be hesitant doing. After all, you need to waste some of your wine to lay a trap for flies. As these flies get attracted to anything that is fermented, wine makes a good choice as a bait for them. You may use red wine or white wine whatever is available with you.

Ways to Use Wine to Make a Fly Trap

  • You may pour about ½ a cup of wine in a glass and place it somewhere near where flies will spot the glass. After a while, youll find some of them floating in it.
  • To be doubly sure that flies dont just fly away after having some, use some dish wash liquid too. Take a bowl or a pan and pour some wine into it. Also, pour a little dish wash soap. Now place the bowl where flies are seen the most. Once they land on this solution, theyll not be able to escape.
  • You may leave some wine in the bottle itself and place the same without cap close to the area frequented by flies. If the mouth of the bottle is too wide, use a plastic wrap to cover it. Poke some holes on this plastic wrap so the flies could enter the bottle. They would never exit through the holes.
  • Clean Trash Bins Regularly
