How To Make A Semi Circle Patio

Laying The Knot Elements:

The had revealed the importance of laying the Knot elements in a particular sequence and the need for repeated fine adjustment of position as more and more elements are added. The three-sided centre stone must be laid first, and aligned so its longest axis matches that of the string guide line.

Each apex of the centre stone acts as a position guide for the placement of the next elements, the curved elements marked as “10” on the supplied laying guide. One end of each curved element aligns with an apex of the centre stone. Note that these curved pieces lead off from the centre stone in an anti-clockwise direction. The knot elements can only be laid in one direction.

Once each element was in position it was tapped down to level using a rubber mallet.

The curved elements were followed by the first of the sable background pieces, the three-sided elements labelled “6” on the supplied plan. These were placed in the niche formed where two of the curved pieces overlap.

Next, the first of the knot end pieces, the larger elements labelled “8” which were placed to enclose the infill pieces laid previously. Some minor adjustment was required at this stage to even out the joints between the various elements laid so far.

The smaller knot end pieces were laid next. These are the final Cotsdale Limestone elements forming the knot. The remaining pieces are all Sable sandstone infill pieces.

How To Build A Patio Circle

This laying method applies to all light traffic patios. ;

The example patio below was built for a free-standing hanging chair, but the same method applies to all, whatever you decide to place on it.

• Dig the hole to about 6 inches or 150mm.
• Lay geo-textile permeable membrane, if you like, although it is not absolutely necessary because the hardcore, mortar and pointing will stop the weeds from coming through.
• Fill the hole with hardcore to 3 inches or 75mm.
• Level off with a rake and long spirit level, or a board with a spirit level on top.

• Tamp down firmly with a wooden board. ;
• The ground is sloping slightly to the bottom of the picture but make sure the circle of hardcore is flat at this stage.

• The circle is ready for the mortar now.

• Mix the mortar on a firm board, in a wheel barrow or a cement mixer, using sharp sand and cement at a 4:1 ratio.
• Not too wet, just damp so that it is holding together, but damp enough so that you can tap it down .

• Lay another ring or two, depending on the size of your feature.
• Cover the edges with turf, bark or gravel.
• Let the circle dry for a couple of days…

And there we have it.

This circle isn’t going to move any time soon!

Laying The Patio Stones

For a circular patio, its best to start at the centre and work outwards. That way you know everything will fit neatly, and youll have no glaring gaps in the middle.

Now youll need to spread mortar to a depth of 30-40mm covering the area required for each slab, then place the stone down and tap it level with the rubber mallet. Leave about 15mm between each stone. Use the spirit level and the building line to ensure everything is level, and avoid walking on the slabs for at least 24 hours.

Gravel Patio Fire Pit

If you want to utilize your backyard for a grill-out or to catch warmth during cold seasons then you may add a fire pit to your gravel patio. Usually circular in shape and made up of stones, the fire pit acts as the central feature of the patio.

A fire pit is actually pretty easy to install. It is made by interlocking pieces of stones together to form a round shape. An adequate height is usually 3 to 4 levels or full courses of stones joined by an adhesive or mortar. Then pea gravel is added as topper for the whole ground area surrounding the fire pit.

In this Mediterranean inspired raised gravel patio design, the fire pit is not built-in and is completely movable. The brown pea sized gravel covering the patio floor creates a great contrast against the surrounding grass and the swimming pool.

Planing Paperwork And Materials

We carved our patio into a gradual hill, using the retaining wall to hold back the slope. The main wall is a 30-ft. long arc, 30 in. high. The patio is 11 ft. in diameter. This combination creates a cozy area for a couple to enjoy a cup of coffee or read a book and creates a nice space for flowerbeds and plantings. If you plan to entertain, or want room for the kids to cruise around, you can easily stretch the patios diameter to 16 ft. without complicating the job. Increase the wall diameter accordingly.

Most communities dont require a building permit for patios or for retaining walls under 4 ft. high. They can usually be placed anywhere on your property, which makes them a great alternative to a Planning, paperwork and materials deck in small yards. But keep them out of easements, which are bands of property left open for drainage or for access to buried utilities. Your local building or planning department can tell you, or your survey will show you, if there are any on your property. Review your plans with them to be safe. Also call the local utilities and have them mark their underground lines, even if you dont think there are any in the area. The service is free and it could save you from an injury or from having to dig up your patio later.

How To Build A 3 Piece Semi

This semi-circular wood bench is a great addition to a garden, deck or around a fire-pit.

This project uses cedar, but redwood would work just as well. If you decide to use treated lumber, only make the base assemblies from it and use cedar or redwood for the seat slats. When buying lumber, look for pieces that are straight and have the fewest knots, especially knots that are on the edge of the board. Note that dimensional cedar may be more difficult to find at your local home improvement center or hardware store, so you may need to visit a lumber yard.

The area of your circular space is the radius squared and then multiplied by 3.14 . So, if the diameter of your deck is 20 feet, your radius would be 10 feet. 10 squared is 100, and when you multiply by pi you have a deck with 314 square feet of space.

How To Secure The Seat Braces To The Bench Legs

Attach the braces to your bench legs by using pocket hole screws to secure the seat.

Attach the Apron Pieces to the Legs

Position an end apron flush against two legs and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws. Build two assemblies.

Place a scrap piece of 1-by material underneath the short front apron and positioned flush against two end apron assemblies and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws.

Position the short back apron flush against the end apron assemblies and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws.

How To Secure Your Bench Seat

Use a drill to secure the bench slats for the top of the bench.

Final Assembly

Find a large and flat work surface for the final assembly steps.

Position all of the seat slat assemblies with the pocket-hole sides facing up. Place the base assemblies on top the seat assemblies and test fit. The innermost seat slat assembly should be flush with the front edges of the base assemblies and overhanging the outside edges of the side base assemblies by 1-1/2 inches. The outermost seat slat assembly should be flush with the back edges of the base assemblies and overhanging the outside edges of the side base assemblies by 1-1/2 inches.

Attach the base assembly side rails and back rails to the innermost and outermost seat slats using 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws only .

Drill countersunk pilot holes in the front rails and seat braces of the base assemblies positioned as shown in Image 2 . Drive 2-1/2″ deck screws through these pilot holes and into the seat slats.

Position the remaining seat slat assemblies equidistantly apart and attach using 2 1/2″ pocket-hole screws and 2-1/2″ deck screws. You can use a spacer from scrap wood or a paint stirrer to help with positioning the parts .

Turn over the assembly and apply a coat of Olympic Maximum Sealer to the seat slats and touch up the base assemblies if needed.

How To Drill Pocket Hole In Bench Seat Legs

Set the pocket-hole jig and drill bit for drilling into 1 1/2 inch stock and drill the pocket holes in the front aprons.

Cut the Apron Pieces

The aprons are rails used to connect the legs and support the seat. Use the layouts in Image 1 and Image 2 to create the long and short front aprons. Refer to the cut list above for the exact sizes of the aprons.

To cut the radii on the inside corners of the front aprons, use a half-dollar coin or something of similar size .

For marking the top arc, use a thin strip of wood or a flexible metal ruler. Drive in nails or brads to hold the wood strip or ruler in place while marking . Use a jigsaw to cut the front apron pieces to shape.

Drill pocket holes in the front aprons as marked in Images 1 and 2. Set the pocket-hole jig and drill bit for drilling into 1-1/2-inch stock .

Cut the long and short back apron pieces. Refer to the cut list above for the exact sizes. Drill pocket holes in the long and short back aprons as marked in Image 6.

Cut the end apron pieces to size. Again, refer to the cut list for exact dimensions.

Apply the finish to the aprons and legs prior to assembly. We used Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain on the legs, and Cabot Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain on the aprons. This finish acts as a primer/sealer and top coat in one.

• on May 18, 2017measure the distance between the two points you hope to join with the semi circlehave a piece of wood large enough to create that space. Place a nail in the spot that, when having a string and marker attached will create the circle arc that allows it to span the measured distance.
• William on May 18, 2017AHA! An arch top gate! Several years ago I put up a fence using premade fence panels. But I wanted arched tops. Take a piece of flexible wood board, slat, longer than than the width of the gate. Make a bow out of the board with some string. Center the bow across the top center of the gate. Mark you arch. Tighten or loosen the string to make a steeper or less steep arch. I hope this helps.

Prepare The Site And Place Stones

Prepare the siteUsing shovel, remove 3 in. depth of soil from the entire circle. Tape the level to the narrow side of the 2-by-4; use the board to level the surface.

Fill circle with 2 to 3 in. of sand, rake smooth, then recheck the overall level.

Moisten sand with water, then tamp it firmly. Level again.

Place the stonesStarting at the outer edge, position the large stones to sit slightly above the surrounding soil surface.

Arrange as carefully as possible for fit; place as many large pieces as possible, then fill in with smaller pieces.

Position the long back apron and long front apron flush against the end apron assemblies and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws.

Cut the Seat Braces and Assemble

Cut the seat braces, check the cut list for size. Drill pocket holes in the seat braces as shown in Image 1 .

Position a seat brace centered and flush against the top of the short front apron and short back apron and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws .

Note: In this next step, you’ll be creating two assemblies that are mirror images of each other, with the end leg assembly positioned on the outside of the two long front apron assemblies.

Position an end apron flush against two end legs and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws. Build two assemblies.

Place a scrap piece of 1-by material underneath the long front apron and positioned flush against one end apron assembly and one end leg/end apron assembly and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws.

Position the short back apron flush against the end apron assemblies as shown in Image 5, and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws.

On both assemblies, position a seat brace centered and flush against the top of the long front apron and long back apron and attach using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket-hole screws.
