Tip: I also use Mexican beach pebbles to top-dress contemporary container plantings and as a smooth gray mulch under bamboo and palm trees.

Mixing Mortar In A Cement Mixer
Pour about a quarter of a bucket of water into the mixer. Add half the sand, then the cement. Run the mixer, then add the rest of the sand and more water if necessary. Mix it thoroughly until you have a soft consistency.
Dont allow mortar to dry on your tools. Clean them with a stiff brush from time to time. If using a mixer, wash the drum thoroughly after use.

Builders call that gap an expansion joint. When the house was built and the slab patio poured, there was no gap. Cement expands and contracts with temperature. The house slab cement is shaded and stable, while the patio cement will expand and contract with the seasons.
The problem is that the two cement blocks the house and the patio arent expanding and contracting together, so they crack apart in an unsightly way.
The two cement slabs will always be expanding and contracting independently, so you need to fix it with something that is a little flexible not cement based.
Pick a warm, sunny day after several sunny days and with up to 5 more sunny days in the forecast. The concrete should be bone dry. Then, excavate the crack to about 3 inches deep. If there are ridges and humps in the concrete along the crack, try to level them out with a chisel or grinder. Blow out any sand or pieces of cement.;
If the gap is over 1/4 inch wide or more than 1 inch deep, youll need some foam backer rod. Backer rod comes in rolls, in many diameters. Dont worry about the color, as youll be covering it with sealant. If the crack is too deep, first fill it in with some sand. Heres a good video to watch.

The material cost of pea gravel usually varies depending on the size of the project. For small projects, pea gravel usually costs around $300 to $400 for a 200 square foot coverage. Since small projects have small material requirements, pea gravel can be sourced from local home improvement stores. Purchase gravel in bags of 0.5 cubic feet at approximately $4 to $6 per bag for the plain stones and $8 for the colored variant. However, this cost still varies depending on the location.
For larger projects, pea gravel must be purchased from a landscaper or a gravel and stone supplier at tons or cubic yards. ;Plain pea gravel costs around $30 to $35 per cubic yard or $40 to $45 per ton. If you prefer the colored variety, consider an additional amount of $20 to $50 to your cost. Buying in bulk can save you more because the price can go as low as $15 to $20 per ton for a minimum quantity of 10 tons. You can avail of the wholesale from gravel distributors if you have this amount of material requirement.

A Snap a chalk line parallel to the house to mark the location of the border decorative pavers. Remember to leave a gap of at least 1/4 in. between the border decorative pavers and the house.
B Lay out field pavers to locate the side borders. A simple row of pavers will work even if you plan to lay them later in a herringbone pattern as we did. The goal is to establish a field width that allows each course to end with a full or half paver, but not smaller pieces. That means less cutting, less waste and a neater look.
C Position the border pavers and mark their locations. It’s OK if the border decorative pavers don’t quite reach the edge of the patio, but don’t let them overhang. Nudge one border patio block outward by 1/4 in. to allow a little extra space for the field pavers.
D Snap a chalk line to mark one side border. To make this line square with the line along the house, use the 3-4-5 method.E Mark the other side border. Measure from the first side to make sure the two sides are parallel.
F Leave the final border unmarked and install the border after the field is complete. That open end makes screeding off the excess sand easier and lets you position the final border perfectly.
Use Sand As The Sealant
Sand can be the best to seal the gaps between your pavers. It can be very effective especially to set closers when you use fillers to solidify your pavers. But you will not get a decorative accent. Consider using polymeric sand to get a stronger bond. This sand can make a joint strong between your pavers. Also, be sure to calculate and know exactly how much sand youll need before installation.;

- Expanding cracks. This method will work over most crackswhich grow and shrink with seasonal ground movement. But if you have a crack that has noticeably grown in recent years, this method is risky. The crack may eventually telegraph through the pavers, creating a hump or gaps.
