Seventh: Preparing The Fabric

How to Make Cushions for a Curved Patio Set

Check the fabric manufacturers recommendations for cleaning.

If you never plan on tossing the cushion covers in the washing machine and dryer, you can probably skip prewashing the fabric.

However, if there is a chance you will wash and dry them, make sure to prewash the fabric.

It would be horrible if the cushion covers shrank after you made them and no longer fit!

Eighth: Make The Welting

Note: You will use the zipper foot to make the welting.

If you have salvaged the cording from the old cushion covers, you have the exact lengths you need.

If youre using brand new cording, there are 2 options:

  • You can cut individual lengths of cording to match the measurements you took in the beginning. Include a little extra, just in case.
  • You can add all those measurements up to make one long piece of welting.
  • If you do option 2, you can cut the welting to the exact measurement when you sew it on the pillow cover.

Two Ideas For Sketching A Fabric Layout

ONE WAY to sketch how youll layout the pattern pieces is to draw a long rectangle on paper OR use a sheet from a notepad that will be the length of fabric.

Label one as 52-54 wide and the other 60 wide.

Work with one long rectangle at a time.

Using the measurements you recorded earlier for each fabric piece, draw smaller rectangles inside the larger rectangle, arranging them to fit with as little fabric waste as possible.

As you draw out a plan for laying out the pieces on the fabric, keep in mind whether or not youll be looking for a fabric with a print that would have a specific direction to it.

Note: The drawing doesnt need to be to scale or exact. But you do need to mark the measurements of each piece. This will allow you to double-check your math.

Youll also be able to use these sketches when its time to lay out the pattern pieces and cut the fabric.

A SECOND METHOD to figure out a layout is to use graph paper. Draw each part of the cushion cover on the graph paper and label it with the measurements.

Then, cut out the pieces and lay them out on another piece of graph paper that represents the fabric.

This method will more to scale. In the image below, each square unit is equal to 2.

Third: Determine How Much Fabric To Buy

With the measurements you took on the old cushion covers, youll be able to determine how much fabric you need to buy.

Do this by creating a sketch on how to layout the pieces.

Unless you already know the width of the fabric, draw two plans:

    • One sketch where the fabric width is 52-54 wide.
    • Another sketch where the fabric width is 60 wide.

Ninth: Cut Out The Pattern Pieces

Make sure the fabric is square before laying out the pattern pieces. By doing this you will ensure your finished cushion covers wont have any ripples.

Follow the diagram you made in the beginning, to lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric.

If you need 2 of a pattern piece, consider folding the fabric in half and cut them both at the same time if it works with the layout diagram you made.

Side Note: Learn how I made my pattern weights.

Cut the pieces out carefully and transfer any marks to the fabric.

    How to Deconstruct Patio Cushions

    What You’ll Need

Making your own patio chair cushions is a fun project you can undertake to spruce up your patio furniture without going through the expense of purchasing anything new. You can customize your cushions to get the design, firmness and size you want.

All you need is some skill with a sewing machine and you can begin sewing your cushions.

Step 1: Measure Your Patio Chairs

Before you begin, you need to measure your chairs. Do this by taking the measurement of the seat width first, including the part inside the arms to help fit the cushions more easily. Next, measure the length of the chair from the top of the chair, where you probably want your cushion to start, right up to the edge of the seat.

    Step 2: Cushion Thickness

The thickness of your cushions depends entirely on you. Anywhere from 1 to 1 ½ inches is enough to provide a layer of comfort, but if you want your cushions to withstand heavy use, you can make them up to an inch thicker. You should also decide on foam firmness.

    Step 3: Purchase Your Material

Purchase a piece of foam for each chair in the thickness and firmness you require. Keep in mind that good quality foam will cost just a bit more but give you years of use. Purchase the fabric using the measurements of the foam as an estimate but keep measurements for each cushion in mind.

Step 4: Cut Foam and Fabric

    Step 5: Sew Your Cushions

How To Make Lounge Chair Cushions

A patio lounge chair is the perfect place to relax, read a book, take a nap or soak up the sun. We had this old lounge chair that had been in storage for many years and decided to spruce it up. Its a companion piece to the Curved Patio Set we made new cushions for in another post . For our lounge chair we made one large cushion connected by hinge pieces. Were going to show you step-by-step how to make a lounge cushion just like this in our video.

Since our lounge cushion is going to be outside and sits on the same patio as our Curved Patio Set , we chose a Sunbrella® Upholstery Fabric, for its comfort and weather resistance. We chose to use this striped Sunbrella fabric to keep this chair in the color scheme of the rest of the patio.

Our lounge chair required three cushions: the seat, feet and back cushion. To successfully attach all of these cushions together with hinges you need to carefully pattern all your fabric pieces and then assemble them in the correct order. In the video we will carefully go over the patterning and assembly of this cushion. We also made an attached headrest pillow for our lounge chair, but this step can easily be omitted if youd rather.

The following directions and photos are specific to the back and boxed cushion covers I made.

You may not need to complete all of the steps.

Alternatively, you may need to add some steps.

It really depends on what features your finished cushion covers will have.

The idea behind providing these directions is to give you a general idea of the order in which you may need to construct your pillow covers.

Seam allowance: Use the same one that was used on the original cushion covers.

I wasnt crazy about the stripe at first because I used a stripe last year. I really wanted to use the geometric fabric I used on the pillow for the cushions, but there were only two yards left on the bolt.

The stripe is so classic, though and it is really easy to sew with, so Im happy with how it turned out!

It took me almost eight yards to cover all the cushions. That includes a total of eight cushions.

Thats approximately one yard per cushion, but I was able to cut two side-by-side in my fabric. These are quite thick so you should be able to do the same.

    Get To Know Your Fabric

Working with outdoor fabric is different from dressmaking or crafting fabrics. Outdoor fabrics are heavier, thicker and sturdier than regular fabrics, and have special weather-proofing treatments, which can make them feel slicker and smoother. This may take a little getting used to, but if you start slowly and give yourself time to get to know the material, youll do just fine. One of the great things about outdoor fabric is that it holds its shape beautifully.

    Fourth: Shop For Fabric

Think about where youre going to put the outdoor furniture.

    • Will the area be covered or uncovered?
    • Will you store the cushions inside our outside when you arent using them?
    • Will they stay in the elements?

Answering these questions beforehand will help you shop for fabric that will meet your needs.

    Consider such things like:

    • fade-resistant
    • how you clean it

Diy Patio Cushionsfast And Budget Friendly

When we moved into our home four years ago, my husband and I promised each other that we would do more home projects to put our personalities into our home. Four years later, we dont have any family photos on the wall, and while I have a concept in mind for each room, I never want to redo a room unless I can do it all at the same time. I want instant gratification.

Remember Trading Spaces? One room, two days, and a tight budget to transform it. Okay, okay . . . it was $1,000 and they had Ty Pennington and professional designers . . . but thats the kind of instant gratification I want in a weekend project. Unfortunately, thats rarely do-able with our budget, busy schedules, three young kiddos, and running an in-home daycare that requires rooms to be functional.

Last month, I looked outside at our deck and cringed. The original stain was nearly gone. The surface was packed with kids picnic tables, random toys, and cushion-less furniture. It was a mess. I wanted a place where my family wanted to be outside. My kids were outgrowing some of the kid furniture and I desperately wanted something that was colorful and inviting, but most importantly kid-friendly. So, I gave myself one weekend and a tight budget .

I finally found a project that anyone could do. Its incredibly affordable, versatile, and most importantly, its fast! I mean, like, once you have your supplies ready to go, you can throw this together in five minutes. No joke.

    Sixth: Make Pattern Pieces

If at all possible, you want to use a seam ripper to take apart the existing cushion cover.

These individual pieces can be used as pattern pieces for your new covers.

Document the deconstruction by taking pictures as you pull each piece part or by sketching a diagram.

This will be REALLY helpful when you start constructing your new cushion covers.

There are two ways you can use the old cushion cover pieces:

  • Trace the pieces on large pieces of paper to make actual pattern pieces.
  • Use the fabric as the pattern pieces themselves.
  • Regardless of which method you use, when you pull apart the cushion covers make sure to keep the seam allowances. That way, youll know exactly what to trace.

If you make your own pattern pieces, label each piece with the cushion part, how many you need of it, the seam allowance that was used, the grain of the fabric, and transfer any darts, pleats or other folds to the pattern.

If you use the old fabric as the pattern pieces themselves, youll be able to see the seam allowance size and where any darts or pleats were used. Also, youll be able to determine the grain of the fabric.

However, you may want to pin a label on each piece so you know what it is.
