How to Repair Peeling Paint Using a scraper or 100-grit sandpaper, remove any loose, cracked, or peeling paint from the damaged area. Using a putty knife, apply a thin layer of patching material to the damaged area. Use 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the patched area and make it even with the surface.
Remove Flakingpaint With Wire Brush And Sandpaper
First run a wire brush briskly over your metal outdoor furniture to remove peeling paint chips and rust.; Theres a variety of wire brushes out on the market, but I ended up using brushes I already owned.;
For the larger spots I used a retired metal grill brush.; Every year we buy a new metal cleaning brush for our grill, so I clean and retire the old one for potential cleaning or DIY projects.;
But to get into the corners and tight, odd-shaped spots and spaces on this outdoor metal table, I used a circular metal radiator cleaning brush.; Its actually the same brush I use to get in between the fins to clean my cast iron radiators.;;;
Next, give a hard sand to the rusty areas with 80-120 grit sandpaper.; I sanded until a good portion of the rust was completely removed.;
Honestly, Im terribly sure this is the best route to remove the rust on this outdoor metal side table.; In hindsight I probably should have picked up a can of Rust-Oleums Clean Metal Primer.
But, I want to test it out without the rust prohibited.; Even if I get a few years out of his table before I have to re-do, Im OK with it.
Once you have tackled the rusty areas, follow by lightly sanding the entire faded metal outdoor furniture piece. My outdoor metal side table is small, so I just used a regular 9 inch x 11 inch piece of sandpaper.; But if you have a larger project, like an entire patio set, you might want to consider investing in an orbital sander.;;

We all want to be proud of our homes and be able to have friends or family over. Dont let a little paint get in the way of having fun with your loved ones. Ive made the mistake of thinking that repainting a metal chair will take forever and isnt worth the time or effort. But Im here to tell you that if my wife thinks the chairs in this post look good then you will, too.
Here are the supplies youll need:
This project will take you about two hours and it the end youll be super stoked with your chairs makeover. So lets get to it.
Prep Work: It Makes All the Difference
Thoroughly inspect your entire chair for peeling or cracked paint.
Step 1 Scrape off loose paint.
Step 2 Use the wire brush to remove small chips and rust. ;Wire brushing is the best option for rounded or oddly shaped areas. Both of these steps are super simple and shouldnt take you more than 15 minutes. You dont need to get all the paint off and completely smooth, just be sure to remove the loose or flaking pieces.
We had some rust spots where the paint wore away over the years. The chair arms were super rusty in certain spots and thats where a random orbit sander comes in handy.
Step 4 After using the sander, remove dust and dirt with a bucket of water and sponge.
Let the chair completely air dry before moving onto Step 5: painting.

How To Paint Plastic Patio Furniture
Conventional wisdom says dont, but if you arent especially attached to your plastic patio furniture and wont be heartbroken if the finish doesnt last for years, painting it might be worth a try.

Refinishing Your Metal Outdoor Furniture

So you finally finished making your garden look amazing with one of our helpful articles only to look over and see that your patio furniture is a rusty mess. You’re probably wondering what you can do about it. Sure, you can throw it out and buy new furniture, but getting that old furniture looking good again isn’t difficult and can save you some money. If you’re willing to invest a little time and money, you can rescue that old patio furniture and give it a brand new look, with a little help from naval jelly.
What’s Naval Jelly?
Naval jelly is a commercial product specifically formulated to remove rust and is commonly available at most home and hardware stores. It’s a great option for cleaning up metal furniture because its thick consistency makes it stick to vertical surfaces, giving the acid time to dissolve the rust.
A Word of Caution
Step 1 – Prepare the Surface
Remove as much surface rust as you can using a wire brush or steel wool. Take your time and be thorough. Doing so will prevent having to repeat steps later.
Step 2 – Apply Naval Jelly
Step 3 – Rinse and Dry
If your furniture is deeply rusted, you may need to repeat Step 1 and Step 2 until you get the desired results.
Step 4 – Apply Primer
Step 5 – Apply Paint
Sand All Of Furniture
Now that all of your patio furniture is clean, you want to sand it and remove all of the sheen from the old finish. If you paint over a glossy surface, the new paint will have a hard time bonding to the old finish. Whereas if you sand it to a dull finish, this means you have thoroughly scratched up the old paint and given the new paint a surface that it can easily bond to.
A 3M Metal Finishing Pad is perfect for scuffing the surface. These pads are easier to get into small areas and easier to wrap around round metal.;If you dont have a metal finishing pad, then a fine grit sanding paper will work just fine as well.
If the old paint is really rough and/or chipping, then I like to use a medium grit sand paper and sand these areas until they are nice and smooth. I will then switch to a fine grit pad to smooth out any sanding scratches left behind.

Rinse With Clean Water
One nice feature of the cleaner bottle on the hose is that you can switch it to rinse without having to remove it. This way, I donât have to run down to the spigot, turn off the water, run back up to the deck, remove the bottle, attach the sprayer, then run back to the spigot to turn the water on. Whew, it makes me tired just thinking about it! ï
Removing Flaking Paint And Rust
My dad taught me everything I know about fixing things. Ive helped to re-shingle a couple of roofs, painted more rooms than I care to remember, done a tiny bit of electrical work, and worked on a few other odds and ends. Im not the best handywoman in the world, but I can hold my own.
So, when I saw the flaking paint and rust on my outdoor furniture set, I knew that it would have to be scraped off and sanded prior to repainting. I used a paint scraper to remove any paint flakes and then used a fine grade steel wool to sand it down. Mine were grade #00 . You could go with a coarser grade and Im sure it would be fine.
