When & How Often To Use Weed And Feed On The Grass

Most of them can be used every 6 to 8 weeks during the Spring, Summer and Autumn. Bear in mind though that because they have high levels of nitrogen in them, you may not want to apply the same weed and feed products all through the seasons.

Feeding your soil too much nitrogen can have drawbacks.

At best it will create excess thatch that will need scarifying and an overseed, to the worse end whereby it scorches the lawn and makes it look brown.

Some scorch though, may only be visible for a short time, like the next couple of mows after application.

Personally, I recommend using it once per year, when the weather is cool, wet and youre looking for growth. Other than that, its best to weed THEN feed with a fertiliser specific for the time of year needed.

When Should I Fertilize My Lawn In Spring And Fall

As well as knowing how often to apply fertilizer, its also key to know when to apply the fertilizer. To answer this question, it is recommended that you should always follow the instructions found on the label of your chosen fertilizer. However, following the general tips below will help you decide when to fertilize the lawn:

• Apply when the grass is actively growing.
• Apply when the soil is damp and the grass is dry.
• Apply when the grass is frost-free.
• Dont mow the lawn 3 days before or after applying the fertilizer.

Applying fertilizer outside of the period stated on the instructions as well as the guide above will run the risk of damaging your lawn so it is important to pay attention to this.

The best way to avoid damaging your lawn is the flush out the weed & feed. Water your lawn with 1 to 2 inches of water for about 4 days. Dont apply any other weed & feed until the following year.

Unfortunately, over watering like this can create run-off in certain drainage situations, so try to avoid the situation in the first place.

Planting Grass Seed Or Aerating After Weed And Feed

Weed& Feed prevents seed germination, so you should avoid planting new grass or aerating your lawn for at least four weeks. If you apply weed and feed in the spring and summer, spread new grass seed and aerate in the fall each year.

Reasons Weed & Feed Didnt Work

Remember to always follow the directions on the package. Always use a spreader to apply. Here are some common reasons why a weed & feed application could be ineffective:

• Weed& feed targets broadleaf weeds like dandelions, and dollarweeds. It does nothing for crabgrass and other grassy weeds. For these, you should use a pre-emergent like Scotts Halts or Sta-Green Crab Ex crabgrass preventer in the early spring. Must be applied before weeds and crabgrass are growing.
• Mature weeds are not actively growing, so the product will not be as effective. Weed and feed should be applied early in the growing season and a couple days after mowing.
• Rain and sprinklers can wash away the granules. Make sure there is no rain in the forecast and avoid watering for two days after applying.

What if You Apply Too Much Weed & Feed?

The best way to avoid damaging your lawn after too much fertilizer application is to flush out the weed & feed. Water your lawn with 1 to 2 inches of water for about 4 days. It would be best not to apply any other weed & feed fertilizer until the following year. How Often Does My Lawn Need Feeding And Treatments For Weeds

• The current condition of the lawn
• The soil beneath it. How deep is it, whats its composition?
• The grass species within the lawn. Robust ryegrasses or shallow rooted fine grasses?

• The microclimate

It is recommended that at least one week pass before applying fertilizer following the use of a herbicide to kill the weeds. A product containing a pre-emergent herbicide is applied to a dry lawn. If rain doesn’t fall within the following three days, irrigate the lawn thoroughly to activate the herbicide. A post-emergent weed and feed works best when applied to a wet lawn so that the granules stick to the weeds’ leaves. However, rainfall washes the granules off the leaves, so wait until no rain is forecast for several days and water your lawn before applying the product. To obtain an even distribution when applying weed and feed, use a lawn spreader. Don’t allow children or animals on the lawn while weed and feed granules remain visible to avoid contact with the herbicide.

Avoid Treatment Of Broadleaf Weeds While Conditions Are Extremely Dry

Some of the broad-leaf weeds youll find on your lawns include- but not limited to:

Other broad-leafs weeds invade your gardens and have very fast-spreading mechanisms.

To keep their spread under control, you have two options:

• One is the spraying of a broad-leaf organic weed-killing herbicide.

For instance, granules work well with wet-dewy leaves. They require water for them to stick on the leaves of the weeds. So, when the grass is dry, and you proceed to apply them, you waste on the chemicals, and both time and money.

Regarding the warm sunny conditions for the spray-weed killers, the high temperatures provide optimum conditions for the absorption of the chemicals into the cells of the weeds.

The other tricky way around it is to water the lawn before applying the chemicals if you are on long-dry summers.

• Your grass is supposed to appear to grow faster and thicker between the first day of the application and after around six days.
• After one week, the weeds are supposed to start wilting and yellowing
• After two weeks, most weeds in your garden or lawn are expected to have turned brown, died, or you can easily remove them using your hand.
• After one month, most weeds will have died, and your grass will become more lush and green.

When To Feed Your Lawn

In Canada, where cool-season grass types like Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues are dominant, youll want to fertilize your lawn twice in the spring and once again in the fall.
