    Install the ledger board.

Start by marking the ledger board location on the house wall. We located the top of the ledger board 90 in. below the bottom of the soffit. On our house, this left a 6-in. step down from the patio door to the deck surface. Remove the siding and attach the ledger with 1/2 x 4-in. galvanized lag screws . Make sure its perfectly level. If the ledger attaches to concrete, predrill holes and insert lead shield lag screw anchors before installing the lags.

Outline deck frame and set beams.

After you mount the ledger, use stakes and string lines to outline the deck frame according to the dimensions in Figure B and mark the footing locations. A few days before you plan to dig the footings, call 411 to have underground utilities marked in the vicinity of the porch. Your local building department will specify how large and deep the footings should be for your climate and soil conditions. Pour a concrete pad in the bottom of each footing hole after theyve been inspected. Let the concrete set overnight.

    Assemble Frame.

Next, choose the six straightest 2x10s for the perimeter beams. Cut the 2x10s for the two side beams to length and nail the pairs together. Use 16d stainless steel or double-dipped galvanized nails for all of the joist framings and to attach the joist hangers to the ledger board. Rest one end of each side beam in the double joist hangers and prop them up until level with a stack of wood.

My thoughts to start with:OSB joints not staggered and no H-clips used.Ridge beam going to house roof was not supported correctly.OSB only spanning 24 inches in many places.Shingle not woven back into house shingle.Pitch in areas is insufficient for shingle used.Do have issues with how attached to rafter ends of main roof.First thought is that the roof deck will need to be removed and redone. Then the framing evaluated . A pergola is an overhang that can be used as a deck shelter or serve as a decorative and functional garden structure. Attaching a pergola to your homes fascia board secures it to the home, giving it more stability. This project can be done alone or with assistance and requires a minimal level of construction skillsStep 1: Attach a Header Board to the Fascia

The existing fascia board may be strong enough to hold the pergola but it is easier to reinforce the fascia by attaching a 2 x 8 header board to it. Drill holes into the header board and fascia board and attach, using the 3/8-inch lag bolts and washers. The lag bolts should sink 2 inches into the header and fascia boards in order to secure them together.Once the header board has been attached to the fascia board, you will have an extra security point at which to attach the pergola. This will provide additional strength to the home and prevent the pergola from giving way and becoming damaged. Step 2: Stain the Header Board

Place the cross beams of the pergola into the joists hangers. The cross beams should be secured with wood screws. This completes the project and the pergola is now permanently attached to your home.

Build The Frame And Roof Structure

To sustain the weight of your porch roof, you need to construct support columns. If your porch is square, connecting a porch roof to your house requires support columns at the two farthest corners of the home. Below is the step-by-step process to frame and construct the roof.

    • Build a frame for the columns from the porch floor to the anticipated roof using 2-inch by 4-inch studs.
    • Use L-brackets and concrete screws to secure the column frame.
    • Install a sill plate between the porchs side supports on the home. The roof support columns upper edges should be level with the sill plate.
    • Place the rafters directly on top of the sill plate. You should mount each rafter to the house with joist hangers.
    • Secure the rafter to the sill plate using screws. The roof pitch will determine where your rafters go. Use 2-by-6-foot rafters if you want a short pitch porch roof.
    • Install rafters to your porch roof until it reaches 1 foot past your porch walls or the support columns.
    • Use a fascia board on the front and sides of the roof structure to help compensate for any irregularities in rafter length.
    • Hold the fascia board against the rafters and hammer galvanized finish nails into place.
    • Cover rafters with thin plywood panels and use a hammer to fasten the plywood into the rafters securely.
    • Lay the roofing materials on the porch roof and work your way out to the porchs edge. Make a seamless pattern on the porch roof. You may need to remove part of the shingles from the house.
