Frame The Walls Accurately For Smooth Assembly

How To Attach a Patio Roof to An Existing House

Since the wall framing for this screened in porch is the finished surface, it’s worth taking a little extra time to make the framing material look good. We chose the nicest cedar 2x6s we could find and ripped them into 3-1/2-in. and 1-1/2-in. boards. We did this to create sharp, clean edges .

Cut the studs and crosspieces to length and screw the walls together . We used a power miter saw for clean, square cuts, but a circular saw will work too. Use a crosspiece as a spacer when you’re attaching the studs to the top and bottom plates. Then cut a 10-in. spacer block to position the crosspieces for assembly.

Best Way To Attach Patio Roof To My House

Hello!

I’ve watched about a billion different youtube videos, Googled my heart out, and read a lot of different posts/articles about attaching a porch cover to my house, but I’d like some opinions from other diy’ers and professionals specific to my house. I have several options, and I’d like to make the right decision. I have attached photos below.Option 1: Install ledger board below the roof overhang, asphalt shingle roof, 12-2 or 12-3 pitchOption 2: Install ledger board directly to roof overhang, asphalt shingle roof, continue the 12-4 pitch from existing roofOption 3: Remove fascia, attach patio structure directly to rafters, similar to this video:

My slab was poured last year, standard 4″ slab. Unfortunately I had to work the day they poured, and I got conflicting answers from my landscaping owner, and a couple of the workers, whether or not they installed footings, and/or rebar in the slab. Long story short, I’m guessing with a cover this large I’ll want to install proper footings just outside the slab, instead of attaching posts directly to the slab.

Measurements:The slab is 11’x34′, and I’d like to cover the entire slab, so the cover would be about 12’x34′.I have just under 12′ from the slab to the bottom of the overhang, so I have plenty of height for any of the above options, as far as I can tell.

I should also mention that this is in the Denver area, so the cover will need to handle some snow load.

Thanks in advance!

Install The Ridge And Rafters

Cut the 2×8 roof plates. If you’re not good at calculating roof angles, start by estimating the angles and cutting the plates an extra 6 in. long. Then set them in place, remark the angles and recut them until they fit. Screw the roof plates through the roof boards into the rafters below. Next measure for the ridge, estimate the angle and cut it a little long. Trim the angle to fit and screw the ridge rafter to the first truss and roof plates. Complete the tie-in by installing a pair of rafters. The framing should be exactly 3/4 in. above the top of the trusses.

How To Install Ledger Board To House

Construction of a roof addition over an existing concrete patio in Bozeman, MT part 2

You can attach a ledger board to a house for a patio cover easily, but it takes a little time. Before you do anything, you must gather the necessary materials, such as:

  • A circular saw
  • Ledger board
  • Lag screws/bolts
  • Nails

It is important that you install a ledger board with the help of at least one other person. The materials can be cumbersome, plus, you should always have a spotter anytime that you work with ladders. Also, be sure to plan out exactly how high up you want to attach your ledger board to your house.

How high you place your ledger board determines the height of the patio cover itself. Once you have all of the tools and materials, you can get started.

Go To The Same Height As The Existing Roof

If you want to have a clean look and make the patio cover flush with the existing roof, you need to strengthen the fascia and back channel by reinforcing the rafters inside the existing roof.

Then, fix the back channel to the fascia boards underneath the gutter directly. This might be one of the common ways of attaching a patio cover to an existing home.

It is simple and easy to do. However, by using this method, your patio cover cannot go high or low.

Building The Supporting Posts

Supporting posts are important parts of the new addition structure. These are the ones that will hold up the new roof, which also means that they work as the underpinnings in the design.

As we already told you at the beginning of this article, there are two types of supports that you can use in this project. The first is simple posts, and the second is columns. However, here we will only talk about the supporting posts that are generally easier to install.

If, based on some consideration, your choice goes to ordinary posts instead of columns, the first thing to do is deciding where you want to locate them. Once you choose it, you can mark the ground by busing a stake in each location. The function of doing this is for letting you know the right spots to dig holes for placing the posts.

Once each location is fixed, the next thing to do is digging a hole to place the post. After that, you can put a post in each hole and then set it by using a concrete mix.

To make sure that all of them can stay in place while the concrete is drying, you can create a temporary brace for each of them.

How To Attach a Patio Roof to An Existing House

Porch columns sit along the front edge of the porch. They are often decorative in appearance, but they also bear much of the porch roofs weight. Japanese Style Patio Roof

This patio roof conjures up images of Japanese houses. The wooden posts support the exposed beams that overhang a little bit.

The latticework allows natural light to pass through so that you will be covered partially. The lanterns hanging over the green couches accentuate the Japanese style of this patio.

And to make it look like a Japanese traditional house, some bamboos are grown next to and in front of the patio.

    Pros:

    • The latticework does not completely block the natural light so that it can still pass through the patio roof.

    Cons:

    • The roof cannot protect you from the rain.

Cut Away The Overhang And Siding To Make Way For The Porch

Building of a roof addition over an existing concrete patio

You’ll have to decide whether to cut a slot where the porch walls meet the siding. If your siding is stucco, brick or stone, you may want to butt the walls to the siding.

Make a mark 1-5/8 in. out from the deck on both sides. Then make another mark 5-1/8 in. inside the first mark. Draw plumb lines up from these marks and cut a 5-1/8-in. slot through the siding but not the sheathing. Set the saw blade just deep enough to cut through the siding only. Remove the siding. Waterproof the slot with No. 15 building paper.

    Add Flashing To Ledger Board

Flashing, aluminum flashing in particular, can save you the heartache of water damage. Place aluminum flashing behind the siding between the siding and the wall beneath it. After you place your flashing, seal the top of it with caulking, and hammer several nails into it.

After you hammer the nails into the flashing, caulk the very tops of each one nail. You may not be able to hide all of the flashing under the siding, and that is okay. If you have a one-story house, see if the excess aluminum flashing can be tucked up to the eaves above the ledger board.

Construct A Jig To Assemble The Roof Trusses

    Prime Before Painting.

Prime and paint the truss parts, wall frame and screen stops before assembly. Prime the wood with a special stain-blocking primer such as Zinsser’s oil-based Cover-Stain. Then brush on a coat of acrylic exterior house paint. Make sure to prime every cut end as you work otherwise, these areas will absorb moisture and cause staining. We prefinished the roof boards with an oil finish .

How to construct the roof truss jig:

It’s easiest to assemble the roof trusses first, using the deck platform as a work surface. Screw two sheets of plywood to the decking and use the dimensions in Figure J to chalk lines indicating the top of the rafters and the bottom of the 2×6 crosstie. Cut triangular blocks and screw them to the plywood to hold the rafters in alignment as you assemble the trusses.
