I used a scrap 1×4 and paint stick underneath of the 2×3 to hold it up so the edges would be flush for when I attached the two boards.

*Note: If you prefer the seat to sit higher than 10 , increase the 10 marks by a few inches to your desired seat height!*

Also, another thing to note is that I am using 2 1/2 indoor Kreg screws because its what I had on hand and my chair is going to be in a sunroom. But, if your chair is going to be totally outside, you should use the blue, outdoor Kreg screws.

Next, attach one of the 30 1/4 boards to the top of the frame with 2 1/2 deck screws and waterproof wood glue. Make sure they are countersunk beneath the wood surface . I used self tapping deck screws that do not require pre-drilling.

Repeat the above steps for the second side chair frame.

DIY Patio Furniture – How to Make a Chair

You should store your outdoor wicker patio furniture in a protected area like the garage or shed during winter and early spring. This way, you will prolong its lifespan. Remember to cover it with a cotton canvas sheet to keep off dust. In the warm season, make it a habit to cover the furnishings when not in use too. Always check and ensure that you cover well-dried tables and chairs to avoid trapping moisture that can encourage molds and mildew growth.

Before installing the chair back boards, attach the main back support to the chair arms. In step four I mentioned leaving three quarters of an inch exposed on the rear seat cross support. The chair back boards will be placed here and attached to the seat boards with screws from the backside.

Now you can secure the chair back boards to the main back support through the front by pre-drilling and using screws. The last part of this step is to add the top rear chair back support. I did this by clamping the support in place and secured it by pre-drilling and using screws from the front.

Skills Tools & Lumber

This is a beginner to intermediate level project. If you have just a little experience with tools, you can do it. Youll need an orbital or a random-orbit sander, a 7/16-in. wrench, six clamps and a drill. You can cut parts with a circular saw and drive nails with a hammer, but youll get faster, nicer results with a miter saw, an air compressor and an 18-gauge brad nailer.

Ive built this design from both pine and cedar. Each pine chair will cost you about $60, cedar about $90. Cedar is a better choice if your chairs are going to spend much time out in the rain. You may find it hard to buy 1×3 cedar, so you may have to rip a 1×6 in half. Also note that rough cedar is usually thicker than 3/4 in., while pine boards come in the standard 3/4-in. thickness. When youre building the seat and back, keep those different thicknesses in mind .

Oil Your Rattan Furniture

Excessive dryness can cause splitting. So its a good idea that you treat the rattan with linseed oil to maintain some moisture and keep it from drying out. Use a soft brush to oil on the furniture and allow it to get absorbed into the rattan fibers. Leave the chairs and tables to dry out after oiling.

Building The Modern Outdoor Chairs

Easy DIY Kids Patio Chairs

These chairs were so simple and easy to build!!! ;All just 2×4;and 2×6;lumber, right off the shelf!

Here’s how I built it –

I cut all my boards according to the cut list below using a compound miter saw.; You could also use a circular saw and a square, or even have your local home improvement store cut your boards for you.; Good straight end cuts are very important.

Then I attached the legs to the longer 2×6 boards, using 2-3/4 long deck screws.; Notice the spacer in between the slats its a scrap 1x that measures ¾ thick.

Heres how it will look with both legs.

Then add the top armrest piece, and repeat for two arms .

Its ideal to have two people to assemble, but if you dont, I used a board threaded between the slats to support my back boards while I attached.; This is the most challenging step of the entire build.

Once the arms are attached to the back and front pieces, two cleats are screwed to the insides of the arms, and seat slats rest on top.; TIP: For added comfort, consider installing the seat at a slight downward angle.

Turned out really well!

Good luck, and if you build, do share pics ;; cant wait to see how your outdoor chairs turn out!

Plans follow, enjoy and share!
